Mannenbenen - Men's legs

De zoon heeft altijd sokken nodig. Ik heb net 12 paar weggegooid, versleten door het vele stappen en een slechte wasmachine... De uitdaging is dus 12 paar sokken breien in maat 46. Ze moeten voldoen aan zijn vereisten, niet te ingewikkeld van ontwerp. Maar voor mezelf als breister mag er toch iets van motiefje inzitten...
Dear Son always  needs socks. I just threw away 12 pairs, worn out by walking a lot, and abuse by an old washing machine.... So my challenge for the next months is to knit 12 pair of interesting men's socks. Interesting for me to knit, but not too complicated designwise....
 

Voor mij voldoen deze aan die criteria. Patroon is Cauchy, door CookieA, uit het boek 'sock innovation'. (Ik zou ook gans dat boek kunnen breien, maar er zijn veel patronen met ajour, dus niets voor de zoon). Maar voor de zoon voldoen ze niet: zijn nieuwe eis is 'geen bruin'. Ik probeerde hem te overtuigen dat beige geen bruin is, maar dat is niet gelukt. Dus deze gaan in de cadeautjesmand.

I thought these were a succes. The pattern is Cauchy by CookieA, from the book 'sock innovation'. (I could knit the entire book, but most patterns have lace, so are not really suitable for DS). But DS has a new rule: no brown. I tried to convince him that beige is not brown, but he did not go along. So these socks will be for an other lucky recipient with size 46.

Zijn vraag was: blauw, grijs of zwart. Ik ben even in de restjes gedoken. Zou dat turquoise ook als blauw gelden?

He asked for blue, grey or black socks. I did some stashdiving for leftovers. Would that turquoise be an acceptable blue for a young men?

 

Deze breide ik ervan, een simpel patroon met afgehaalde steken.  Hier worden ze geshowed door mijn 12-jarig neefje. Ik smokkelde er toch nog een streepje turquoise in...
I have knit this pattern with slipped stitches. Here they are modeled by my 12year old nephew. And I did use a tiny bit of that turquoise...

Hij vond ze zo leuk dat hij ze niet meer wou uitdoen. Ik denk dat ik een volgende sokken-kandidaat heb.
He did not want to take them off, because they felt so nice. I think he is sockworthy...

En dan heb ik nog voor het eerst Regia ‘Pairfect’ gebruikt voor een paar sokken voor de zoon. Met de gele startersdraad kan je weten waar de streepvolgorde begint.
I used Regia Pairfect for the first time to knit a pair of identical striped socks for DS. 

Instructies zijn simpel: wikkel de gele draad af, brei de boord en dan 7 strepen, daarna de hiel en de voet zo lang als nodig voor jouw maat. Daarna terug de gele draad zoeken en sok 2 breien. Zo heb je een paar sokken met exact dezelfde strepen. Is hier een echte hit in onze plaatselijke wolwinkel. Ik gebruikte de grijsblauwe kleuren, maar bestaat ook in beige met pastel en grijs met regenboogkleuren. Het enige nadeel: je krijgt redelijk lange beenstukken (zo’n 20 cm). De zoon heeft zijn sokken liever iets korter. En je moet wel topdown breien. Maar deze zullen zeker van pas komen in de extrakoude winter die eraan komt (hoop ik, seizoenen moeten seizoenen zijn...).
It’s a big hit in my LYS. I used the bluegray colors, but there is also beige and pastels, and gray and rainbow colors. One small problem: you have to knit 7 stripes on the leg, so you have fairly long legs on these socks (DS likes his socks shorter). These will be perfect wintersocks, for the cold winter that is coming... (I hope, I like the seasons to be real seasons).

onbekend- underappreciated

 

Einde juni en ik ben nog niet aan mijn Cookie sokken begonnen... In principe moet ik met groen breien. Daar heb ik niet zo heel veel van in voorraad. Linksboven is Madeline Tosh in de kleur 'Cedar', dat komt nog het best in aanmerking.

Juni is almost finished and I still need to start my Cookie sock of the month. Color of the month is green, a color which I don't seem to have much of in stash.  In the upper left corner is some Madeline Tosh, color 'Cedar', that could work...

 

En het patroon van de maand is Wedge. Ik vind dit een atypische Cookie sok, geen ajour, geen ingewikkeld kabelpatroon om te volgen... bleh. Geen zin om hier aan te beginnen. Het ziet ernaar uit dat mijn Cookie motivatie wat slabakt...

Pattern of the month is Wedge. Too me this is a very atypical Cookie sock, no lace or complicated cable chart to follow. I lack motivation to start this. Looks like I will fall through the Cookie KAL...

Bij de sokkenbreigroep is het thema 'onbekend is onbemind'. Sokpatronen die om één of andere reden heel weinig gebreid worden. En ik wil al heel lang eens experimenteren met de patentsteek, en waarom niet in mijn favoriete meeneemproject, sokken dus? 't Is ook een goed patroon om een rest zelfstrepend garen op te werken (Regia Kaffe Fassett stripes).
The June theme in the sockknitersanonymous is 'underappreciated', knit a sockpattern that for some reason is not very popular. For some time I wanted to try out brioche stitch, so why not in my favorite kind of project, socks? I think this works well with some leftover selfstriping yarn (Regia Kaffe Fassett stripes)

 

En ik heb ook nog een patroon kadoo gekregen van de dochter voor moederdag, iets met afgehaalde steken. Zou goed moeten gaan met die rare streng handgeverfde wol die ik nog liggen heb...Trekking handart in bordeaux, groen en zwart...

I also have this pattern, it was a gift for Mothers day from DD. I think this pattern with slipped stitches will work well with the handdyed yarn that I have in stash.

 

Maar ook deze sokken blijken een beetje 'nah ja...'. Voor het ogenblik ben ik 'total begeistert' van mijn vestje in Wollmeise, kleur 'golden pear'. Komt goed uit, morgen vertrekken we voor 2 weken op vakantie naar Duitsland en Oostenrijk, en dan heb ik met een trui een stevige brok breien om mee te nemen.

But even these socks don't thrill me at all. I am completely smitten by my this cardigan I have just started in Wollmeise, color 'golden pear'. This will be a great project for my 2 week holiday in Germany and Austria.

Mei was ajour.... May lacemonth

Ik loop een beetje achter met mijn projecten te tonen op de blog. Mei was ajourmaand op de sokkenbreigroep. Ik begin elke maand met een Cookie sok, en heb ik dan nog tijd, dan komt er een sok in het thema van de maand. Marilinda was snel klaar, op zo'n dag of 10, dus breide ik nog wat meer ajoursokken in mei.
Marilinda was a quick knit, and 'lace' was the theme for the sockknittersanonymous in May.

Ik wou al heel lang dit garen uitproberen, Lorna's laces Solemate. Het is samengesteld uit wol, nylon en 30% 'outlast'. Dit is een materiaal dat voor klimaatcontrole zorgt, het regelt de temperatuur van het lichaam, zodat je niet te koud of te warm hebt. Echt iets voor sportmensen. Maar jammer genoeg heeft mijn ijzerenman besloten dat handgebreide sokken echt niet voor hem bedoeld zijn.
For some time now I wanted to try out Lorna's laces Solemate, due to the fibre content it should be ideal for sportmen. But the IronMan decided he did not want any more handknit socks.

Dan maar ajoursokken voor mezelf. Ik begin met een lang smal reepje te breien.
So lace socks for me it is. I started by knitting a long narrow strip.

Daarna maas je de 2 uiteinden aan elkaar in het rond.
Next step: graft the 2 ends together in the round.

En van daaruit neem je steken op om het been van de sok te breien.
Continue by picking up stitches from the cuff to knit the leg of the sock.

Het patroon is Marie Antoinette ontworpen door Anne Hanson.

Klaar in minder dan 10 dagen! Het lijkt ingewikkeld, maar het ajourpatroon is zeer logisch opgebouwd. Eigenlijk een verbazend simpele sok, met een indrukwekkend resultaat. Vooral de vlindertjes die op de hiel doorlopen zijn zeer mooi.
Finished in under 10 days (with some other knitting on the side). It looks complicated, but once you get the hang of it, it’s a surpisingly easy sock.

En omdat mei nog niet gedaan was, en ik de mystery sock van de maand mooi vond, heb ik die ook nog maar opgezet. Dat was een beetje overmoedig, ondertussen is het juni, dus een mei-sok wordt dit niet meer...
And because May was not finished, and my fingers itched to do another lace sock, and I liked how the mystery sock looked,...another cast-on. But as it is June now, it's clear that I was a bit overambitious for May.

effen sokken - solid socks

En ik blijf maar sokken breien... en achterop zijn met bloggen... Ik ben lid geworden van de 'solid socks' groep op Ravelry. De uitdaging daar is om met effen wol te breien, en het ontwerp het focuspunt van de sok te laten zijn. Dit was de mystery sok voor september. Niet heel duidelijk op de foto, maar het patroon bestaat kleine ajour 'klokjes' die me aan fuchsia bloemetjes doen denken. Het ontwerp is van Claudia, die ook in Stirling, Schotland op breikamp was. En het garen is handgeverfde sokkenwol van de gildezusters, gekocht op de markt van wol enzo.

I keep on kniting socks... and getting behind blogging about them...I joined the 'solid socks' group on Ravelry. The challenge is to knit (obviously) solid socks. The pattern/design should be the centre of your sockknitting. These are the 'september mystery socks', designed by Claudia. Yarn is 'gildezusters', bought on a small craft fair.


Dit zijn de oktober-sokken. Kleur van de maand is groen, en ontwerper van de maand is Hunter Hammersen. Ik kreeg de wol in een ruil, en het patroon als een 'willekeurige goede daad'. Gebruikt garen : Wollmeise in de kleur 'Sabrina'. Dat zijn dus echt fantastische sokken geworden, met al die gulheid/vrijgevigheid erin gebreid...

And these are the october socks - color of the month is 'green', and designer of the month 'hunter hammersen'. Yarn used is Wollmeise, in color 'Sabrina'. I received the yarn in a swap, and the pattern as a 'random act of kindness', so the socks are destined to be nice, with all that generosity knit into them.


Ik heb even de optelsom gemaakt. Dit jaar heb ik (tot nu toe) 17 paar sokken gebreid, waarvan 1 paar voor de dochter. Ik schiet wat tekort als moeder. Dit is de wol voor het volgende paar,en die zijn voor haar, beloofd!
I just did a 'sock-count' for this year. I have knit 17 pair so far. And only one pair for DD. Bad mom! So, this will be the yarn for the next pair, and they will be for DD, promised.

Maar eerst nog paar 13 voor mezelf afwerken...
But first I have to finish the 13th pair for me...

september sokkenoogst - september socks

Ik heb er nog niet over geblogd, maar natuurlijk heb ik sokken gebreid! Op de 'sockknitters anonymous' groep is de ontwerpster van de maand Kirsten Kapur. Dit is 'Althea', gebreid in Regia silk shine (met een beetje metaal/zilver voor extra bling). De sok wordt van de teen af gebreid, en eindigt met een ajour blaadjespatroon bovenaan. Ik heb altijd 2 verschillende sokken op de naalden. 1 patroon waar ik wat bij moet opletten, en 1 gemakkelijk patroon, om overal mee naar toe te nemen.
I did not blog about it yet, but of course I have knit some socks too the past month. Designer of the month on the SKA-group was Kirsten Kapur. I have knit 'Althea', a toe-up sock pattern, that ends in a lacy leaf pattern. I have knit these socks in Regia silk shine (with added metal/silver for some extra bling). I always have 2 pairs of socks going on my needles, one where you have to pay attention, one easy take-along project.

En dit is 'burning ring of fire' in een Duits handgeverfd garen. Supergemakkelijk patroon, en supercomfortabele sokken. Ik heb ze nu aan terwijl ik dit zit te typen...
And this is 'burning ring of fire' in a German handdyed yarn. Very easy pattern, and very comfortable socks... I am wearing them right now, while typing this at the drafty spot where our computer is...

... en met de titel van deze post bedoel ik niet 'groeten', maar wel grrrr.... van frustratie.

Er is weer een 'mystery sock' (aka mock) en deze keer is het thema 'kleuren inbreien'. De sok wordt van de teen naar boven gebreid.

dus vol goede moed begonnen, en dan maar direct met beide sokken tegelijkertijd...
maar zoals je in foto 1 kunt zien, heb ik de maat van mijn voet weer verkeerd ingeschat, en zijn ze veel te groot geworden.
So I started (a bit overzealous with 2 socks at the same time). But as you can see in picture 1, I overestimated my foot size, and the mock is too big. I always find it difficult with toe-up to determine where to start the heel.



als een project niet goed lukt, dan begin ik maar een andere kleurensok... veel makkelijker patroon; tot ik aan de hiel kom, en het ook niet helemaal meer weet. Het patroon is in het Duits. Ik zal een Duitse hulplijn moeten inschakelen.
When a project does not work for me, I tend to start another one, untill I bump into another hurdle...I don't get the heel treatment in this pattern either. The pattern is in German. I'll have to consult a German speaking knitter to understand it.

Dan maar een supersimpele vintage sok voor de zoon. Zwarte sokken fotograferen met de GSM is ook niet ideaal, maar veel valt er toch niet over te vertellen, over deze sok, behalve dat de zoon nu weer warme voeten heeft.
So I guess it's back to the super simple vintage socks for DS.

Maar die mock laat me niet los. Ik ga me er niet onder laten krijgen door een sok toch? Grrrr...
Ik heb dan maar wat sokkenchirurgie toegepast.
But the mock is still calling. Determined not to get beaten by a sock! So I perform some socksurgery....

en uiteindelijk zal ik nog met een draagbare sok eindigen. Ik ben er niet helemaal tevreden mee. Achteraf gezien zou ik misschien andere kleuren gebruikt hebben...maar ja, daarom heet het ook 'mystery sock' zeker?
...and in the end, I will have a wearable finished sock. In retrospect, I would have chosen other colors, but that's why it's a mystery, I guess.

oudemannensokken - old mens socks

Deze. Toch volgens de dochter. Alhoewel. Als 12-jarige had ik zo'n argyle kniekousen, in 2 tinten knalroze en wit. Het waren toen mijn lievelingssokken.
These ones. (at least according to DD. Although you can get very funky with argyles. When I was 12 years old, I had a pair in 2 shades of shocking pink and white.


Eén van de sokkenthema's voor juni is 'vintage'. Ik ben eens in mijn boekenkast gedoken. Ik heb hier o.a. dit boek 'creatief breien' gevonden. Ergens van de jaren '70, schat ik. Of misschien vroege jaren '80?
One of the June challenges for sockknitters anonymous is 'vintage' (meaning fifties, sixties or seventies). Maybe this book would qualify? probably published in the seventies (or early eighties?)


Maar er staan niet echt veel sokpatronen in. Eén hielloze sok in een blokjesmotief. Een hielloze sok is een zielloze sok. Het plezantste aan sokkenbreien is net de hiel!
But there are not really that much sockpatterns in this book. One heelless sock. And I just enjoy enjoy knitting socks that much because they have heels!

Ik heb nog een ander boek. Met de sprekende titel 'Breien'. Heel erg 70ties, dat lettertype. Uitgegeven door KVLV (de landelijke vrouwengilde, aka 'de boerinnenbond')
I found another one. The font screams '70ties' to me. It's published by a Belgian rural womens associaton. Don't know the English/US equivalent. But they are famous for the cook book'. Every Flemish household has it. Mine is handed down from generation to generation, and is filled with small clippings and handwritten recipes. I digress, sorry!

In dit boek een paar 'simpele' sokken, maar op een heel andere manier neergeschreven dan we nu gewoon zijn. Kan leuk zijn om dit te ontcijferen. En de zoon heeft sokken nodig. Of misschien moet ik toch die sokken van de eerste foto proberen? Of een paar knalroze argyles?
Simple socks. They use a different annotation in this book then what I am used to. Can be fun to decipher. And DS needs socks (he always does). Or maybe I should knit the lace stockings in the first picture? Or some shocking pink argyles?

april sokkenuitdaging - april socks

Bij de 'sockknittersanonymous' was het thema voor april ; brei een sok,gepubliceerd in een on-line magazine. Zodra ik de nieuwe 'Knitty' zag wist ik dat ik deze 'scheve sokken' wou maken.
The April theme for 'sock knitters anonymous' was 'knit something from an online magazine'. As soon as I saw the Skew socks in Knitty, I knew I had to make them.


't Is niet gemakkelijk om een foto van je eigen hiel te maken...In het patroon wordt de hiel omschreven als 'het origami-moment'. En dat is het helemaal. Intelligent patroon, maar het wordt niet mijn favoriete manier om sokken te breien.
It's not easy to take a picture of your own heel. In this pattern they referr to the heel as 'the origami-moment'. It's a very intrigueing pattern, but it won't be my favorite way to knit socks from now on...


Gebruikt garen : Mondial ciao, gekocht vorig jaar in Madrid. Ik geef het toe : wanneer ik op reis ben, koop ik wol als souvenir.
Yarn used : Mondial Ciao, bought in Madrid last year. I tend to buy yarn as a souvenir.


En toen wou ik korte lentesokjes, maar in mei was het zelfs te koud om deze te dragen! Patroon is 'vog'on'. Het garen is Koigu, een handgeverfd Canadees garen, gekocht in Lexington, Kentucky toen we daar in 2003 (!) een huisruilvakantie hadden.
I have also knit a pair of short summer socks, but until now the weather here has been too cold to wear them. Yarn used : Koigu, and I bought that yarn in 2003(!) in Lexington, Kentucky, doing a home exchange there.


Over huisruil gesproken : soms is het Lexington, KY, soms is het Bordeaux. Volgend weekend is het Berlijn. En ja, ik ben eind maart pas in Berlijn geweest. Ik was het niet van plan, maar als ze mij nu vragen om naar daar te gaan... Wie ben ik om nee te zeggen?
Talking about home exchange : sometimes you end up in Lexington, KY, sometimes in Bordeaux, France. Next weekend it will be Berlin, Germany. I know, I have just been to Berlin end of March. I did not plan it this way, but when they ask you to go, who am I to say no?

Weten jullie nog dat ik een paar sokken als 'willekeurige goede daad' naar Berlijn gestuurd heb? Wel, ze hebben er een VIP-behandeling gekregen... ze zijn de ster van een professionele fotoreeks...


Remember the socks I sent as a RAK (random act of kindness)? They have arrived in Berlin some time ago, and now they feature in a professional photoshoot.


Mooi om deze glamourfoto's van mijn sokken te zien, en leuk dat ze echt geapprecieerd worden...
It's nice to see the socks are the star, and apparently well-loved!

Plissé schiet goed op. Maar voorlopig kan ik daar niet echt een interessante foto van tonen. 't Is gewoon een grote lap breisel. Misschien volgende week?
Plissé is avancing well, but not much to show now - all I have is a big pile of knitting. Maybe next week?
