grolsche wanten gestart - groenlo mittens started

Sometimes you are 'possesed' by a project, and you want to start it right away. That's why I tried out the Groenlo mittens, without having the right yarn in stash. I used the
Pingouin Grège (alpaca/wool/silk) in a grey/white color, 2 strands of Rowan Donegal tweed for the red, and 2 different yarns for the blue. For the cuff I used some Finnish yarn I bought this summer. I bought 2 sampler skeins from the boot at the market, wish I bought more now, because it is a really nice yarn (Finnsheep). The other blue on the actual mitten is some Rowan lightweight DK.

Gebruikte garens :
- grijswit Pingouin 'Grège' - alpaca/wol/zijde-mengeling
- rood - dubbele draad Rowan Donegal tweed

Not sure about the colors. The mitten fits very snuggly, I like a bit of room in my mittens to move. And not sure about the big star either. The patern has an option to use smaller stars. Conclusion : I'll have to frog this, and reconsider my options. I like the feel of the Pingouin 'Grège', maybe find other yarns that work with it? And add a few stitches for a roomier fit ? And use the other stars ? Decisions, decisions...

grolsche wanten - groenlo mittens

On the stitch'n bitch event in Rotterdam I saw this table with traditional Dutch knitwear.

This pattern is available in Dutch and in English, for 2.50 euros (each).
For English: PayPal 2.50 euros to jose.gralike@gmail.com and add 'pattern groenlo mittens' to your email address.

I have looked through my stash to find a suitable DK-weight yarn. I have surprisingly little yarn of this weight ! This is what I found : the white is Pingouin 'grège' an alpaca/wool/silk blend. Maybe just a tad too fluffy for mittens. And the blue and red is a rather coars 6ply sock yarn. Maybe those 2 yarns will fight in the same project. I am travelling to Berlin at the end of next week. Maybe some yarn hunting is in order ?

Wolwinkeljacht misschien ?

variations on ribbed socks - variaties op geribde sokken

I love knitting socks, and my DD loves wearing handknitted socks. She doesn't like it when they slide down, so ribbed socks are best. And she loves blues, so what's a mother to do ? To add a bit of interest to the knitting, I was looking for 'different' ribbings.
This is the hedgerow sock, a free pattern on the internet. I already showed these flat, but it's only when you see them on a pair of feet, that you really can have a good look at the stitch pattern. The colums of rib incorparate a textured stitch, that's going down into the heel flap. Neat.
Knitted in Klazien's creaties 'Arwetta', bought at the craft fair in Den Bosch.

And this is the mock wave cable sock, found in Interweave's book 'favorite socks'. The book was a present from Cate, this summer.

The mock cables are formed by increasing and decreasing, in the same way as the 'spiegelsokken'. Here it creates zigzag cables. I could not memorize the pattern repeat, which is OK, because that's why it took me longer to finish these socks.
Knitted in Annabelle 'College', bought in 'Dumpies Wolhuis' in Gent. Very nice discount yarnsale, limited opening hours. Bumped into it, not planning to buy yarn that day !

I had to throw away 2 pairs of socks from DD (probably more then 10 years old). So, I'll have some catching up to do.

Both Knitty and Magknits are online magazines with interesting patterns. I found these ribbed socks that look intriguing :
- thuja Knitted in a sportweight yarn, so that will go faster.
- back to basics
Interesting pattern, because it incorpates all kind of new-to-me techniques (magic cast-on, knitting on 2 circulars, toe-up), and yet, you get a basic pair of ribbed socks. I already tried the cast-on, and it truly is magic.
- tweeds Also knitted in a sportweight (but in a cotton/lycra blend), and an 'inside-out' rib

So, lots of ideas, but I promise I won't overdo it !

knit and meet -up in Leuven - breibijeenkomsten in Leuven

Every 2d Saturday of the month, an informal knitting group gathers in my Local Yarn Store, 't Wolwinkeltje Leuven. Everybody welcome, and a great way to get inspired by what other knitters are knitting.

Can be dangerous for the wallet, if you are tempted to buy more yarn ! But these yarns were already on my list - a luxury sock yarn (Meilenweit seta/cashmere, some colorfull Kaffe Fassett sock yarn, and a huge ball of 6ply sock yarn to knit heavier socks (Lang super soxx sport).

I also found a leaflet about a 'café tricot' starting in my home town Leuven ! It is a bit unclear who's behind it. It has no contact number or name, and it's held in a café (café de la gare, rather busy café near the station). Anybody know anything about this ? Anybody interested in going ? It's every 2d and 4th Monday evening at 8pm, in Café de la Gare, Martelarenplein 15, 3000 Leuven. (now I read it again, it doesn't say starting from what date either). 2d monday would be next week, december 10th. I might pop in at the café earlier, to check out if the owners know anything about this. I'll keep you guys informed ! My guess this is aimed to a rather young audience, with 'café tricot' in the title. The txt of the leaflet is in Dutch and is as follows : "Brei mee ! café tricot. That's it.

Best eens gaan kijken maandag ?

November FO's - afgewerkte projectjes van November

Before my shoulder started acting up I knitted some smaller stuff, that I can only show now. I still had to gift wrap and hand over to the (lucky) recipients. First a pair of socks. There is now a Dutch sock-knitting yahoo group who do knitalongs, and the latest knitalong is now translated in English. It is called 'spiegelsokken' (mirrorsocks), because the pattern is different on the right and left sock, and they mirror each other. It involves 'faux cables', where the cables are created by increasing and decreasing - you get a lacy cable lookalike. Less bulk to fit into your shoe ! You can find the pattern in English on Ravelry. If you are not a member of the Ravelry community, you could mail the designer Lies, and ask nicely. I made these for a collegue at work, who gave me a huge bag of sockyarn leftovers from her grandmother.

Another collegue at work, a new mom, received this baby jester hat. Knitted out of a skein of Mountain goat (wool/mohair), and the perfect color for a jester hat. I received this yarn in the knitters treat exchange from Wendee, and it was a real treat. The hat is too big now, I wonder how it will wear, because it is top heavy. It's a design by wooly wormhead, and she has other interesting hat patterns on her site.
Looking forward to knitting a bit more again, the timer is now on 1 hour daily (unless my shoulder protests).

on the slow burner - langzaamaan...

Healtwise, I have had some problems. My shoulder acted up again, and I had a bad reaction on the anti-inflammatory drugs. I got a stomach flue on top of that, so I spent the last 2 days in bed and not eating at all. It's the first day I am back on my feet. The flue is going around here, because DH had the same type of stomach upset last week. It was just worse for me, because my stomach was not too good to start with.

Sooo- with a bad shoulder and a stomach flue, there was really very little knitting.
I did develop a stratey to knit with shoulder pain :
- rule 1 : don't overdo it !
- rule 2 : time it - I allowed myself 15 minutes a day, and set the alarm clock
- rule 3 : choose something 'beyond your comfort zone' - where you really have to think about what you are doing, and where you don't develop a rythm
- rule 4 : on the other hand, choose a project where you get a result with not too much knitting - small projects it is

Rule 1 and 2 worked out fine - I managed to finish the 'hedgerow socks' in a week, where it would have taken me one evening otherwise. Truth be told, I only had to finish the toe of the second sock.
Rule 3 and 4 : I started 'back to basics' a sock knitted on 2 circulars (new technique to me, especially the cast-on). And I also started the 'mock wave cable socks', from the book 'favorite socks'. But then the flue kicked in, so not much to show yet ...
