changed my mind

2 posts in one day - I have to use blogger when it functions. Just to let you guys know that I have changed my mind again. I won't be using the rowan yarns for the KF vest. Look what I found in my stash : Debbie Bliss wool cotton yarn in yellow, olive and Rowan 4ply cotton in pale blue. It was in my stash under wool, that's why I hadn't considered it earlier. The second picture shows the KF yarns. Maybe I will use a bit of red, just to have some bright colors with all the pastel colors. I hope to show very soon the lay-out of this blanket ! 4 more squares to go ...

pictures of progress log-cabin afghan

I hope I can finally upload these ... Meanwhile I have decided to use the yarns destined to be a KF vest after all. I just won't make it otherwise. I will keep a snippet of each color, so I can substitute if I ever want to knit the cones vest.

log-cabin afghan - progress

I am still knitting on my log cabin afghan in all sorts of cotton from my stash. I already showed you the batch of squares with a red center. I was aiming for 45 squares, as in the blanket that you can see on this blog
I have knitted 26 squares now, and don't have much yarn left, that is, not much color choices. I have 2 balls of brown, a little bit of yellow and a little bit of variegated blue, and one ball of very pale pistachio green. I don't see myself knitting endless variations of green/brown squares.
I have raided my stash, and found more balls of Rowan cotton glace. Now these are part of a collection. I have been saving these to knit KF 'cones' waitcoat. You can see it here. Every time I could find the original colors at a reasonable price at ebay, I bought some. What should I do now ? Give up the idea of knitting this waistcoat, and incorporating everything in the blanket ? I must say my yarn collection isn't complete yet. I need at least 5 more colors, that I haven't been able to find yet. I think the waistcoat looks dated anyway, but I paid a lot for all these yarns. I love knitting colorfull sweaters, but I don't wear them too much. And I still need to finish a blanket for my son - maybe he would actually use the cotton log-cabin one.
Another possibility - stop now, and knit a really big border around it. In my stash I found 7 balls of a brownish red cotton - unfortunately not the same yarn weight as the rest (a bit heavier). And I also have 4 balls of a red and brown variegated. I think adding a very large border might work. sorry no pictures ! Blogger doesn't want to cooperate

reworking KF sweater

Back from Stockholm, I decided to rework the cotton KF sweater, to make it wearable again. Remember, this sweater is knit from side to side. What I did was machine stitch a hem, and cut of part of the bottom of the sweater. Then I reknit a border (in orange) followed by several rows of stockinette in a smooth cotton. Then I pinned it to the sweater, and sewed it on. I am not very good at sewing, so thanks to Josée for helping me with this. I deliberately knitted the hems a bit smaller then the sweater, and that makes it draw in slightly. I am very pleased with the result.

stockholm yarn store

Anna told me about 'Marias garn', a shop in a part of Stockholm called 'sodermalm'. It's on St-Paulsgatan 20 (www.mariasgarn.se)
Whenever I am on holiday, I want to buy some typical yarn for that place, and as a rule I don't buy yarn that I can get in my own LYS (I want to support them too !).
Lately I have begun to knit a bit of lace, so I am always looking for nice lace yarn.
The very nice yarn shop owner of this shop helped to select this (from left to right) :
1) natural grey DK weight yarn from a small farm on the isle of Gotland (www.ihregard.se)
The yarn shop owner told me she went to Gotland, and returned with 15kg of wool. The whole car smelled like sheep. It comes in 3 natural grey colors - I bought the medium color.
2) blue lace weight from a company called Hedängens ull och garn (handdyed in the color peacock)
3) olive linen yarn - not really lace weight, but the shop had a shawl knitted up in this - very nice !

Stockholm knitters

In Stockholm knitters have a wide choice of yarn stores. They also gather in a knitting café every tuesday evening(at Ginoscoffe, Odengatan 47- www.sthlmknitters.blogdrive.com). The number of knitters varies. This time I met Anna and Mary (visiting from the US). I had a nice time and Anna gave me some great tips on yarn stores to visit. My knitting just didn't go very well that evening. I took a sock, but it was a complicated cabled sock, and knitting this and keeping up conversation in English just was a bit too much to handle. I ended up reknitting a big part that evening in my hotelroom !

Kaffe Fassett - Stockholm

You might wonder why I was getting out all the KF sweaters. Actually, I noticed KF has an exhiblit in Sweden, Ryanair had a good deal on airfare and I decided to go ! I just returnded from a 2 day visit. I went to Stockholm in the summer 2005, and I loved the city, so that was an extra incentive to go.
The Kaffe Fassett exhibit is held in Prince Eugenes castle, and the setting is just breathtaking, on the isle of Djurgarden (www.waldemarsudde.com). Unfortunately, no pictures allowed inside. When I arrived KF was giving a guided tour, and I could eavedrops a bit. Besides knitting, there were also some beautifull quilts on display. I ended the first half of my day having some fabulous cake in the museum café, and I bought the Kaffe Fassett book in swedish, autographed by the master.
More on my Stockholm trip tomorrow.

Crochet blanket

Not a Kaffe Fasset, but very Kaffeish - my just finished crochet blanket. I know this is a knitting blog, but I wanted to show it to you anyway. I based this on a pattern in the latest Interweave crochet special, and the designer claims she was inspired by Kaffe Fassett. Now the pattern was made in a soft merino (Koigu) and mine is in scratchy shetland yarn. Therefore, the recipient (my son) said he will not use it. I will try to line it, and it still needs a border, so technically it is not finished yet. Probably it will end up unused. I am very pleased with how it looks (had to make color substitutions again), and hope lining it will solve the scratchiness. This was one of those stash reducing projects. I liked crocheting it, the sewing was not my cup of tea, but the result is worth it. Still working on my knitted log-cabin cotton blanket !

Kaffe Fassett - tropical stripes

This is 'Tropical stripes', it was in KF's 'california patches' book. Again, a cuff to cuff sweater; and again my color interpretation of the original. I bought lots of yarn for it when I attended a Jean Moss workshop in Holmfirth at the Rowan mill, in 2003. This one was also too long, I chopped of the bottom, knitted a new bottom ribbing and sewed it on. I know this works with wool, and would like to try it out on the cotton sweater, but an a bit hesitant. I have started knitting new hems. If it works, I promise pictures !

Kaffe Fassett - cotton glace sweater

In my previous post I showed you a KF sweater I actually wear (once a year). Today a sweater that I have worn a lot, but that kept on growing and growing and growing ... due to the stretch factor of cotton. This one is knitted mostly in Rowan cotton glace, on 3.5mm needles. The pattern was in a fall Vogue knitting (3 years ago ?) I can look it up, if anybody is interested. It's a cuff to cuff sweater with a boat neck. It started out to use up my leftovers, and then I bought somebody else's leftovers on Ebay, and had to buy extra yarn ... The cotton blanket I am knitting now uses left-overs of this sweater. It's knitted in a pattern of reverse stockinette and stockinette. I loved knitting it, and I loved wearing it. I must say I knitted it a bit longer then the pattern, because I like tunic lenght sweaters. I am considering to shorten it, but am afraid to cut in the cotton ... that would make it wearable again, so it's still an option. I made up my own color scheme, and tried to keep the red/pink/brown/fuchsia/orange for the reverse stockinette (the ridges) and accent colors (blue/olive, baby pink...) for the valleys.

kaffe fasset - big diamonds jacket

I am still knitting on the log-cabin blanket, but I won't show you a knitted square every day ... that would get boring. I plan to take a picture when I have finished a batch of those ... Let's talk something else, Kaffe Fassett for instance ...

When I discovered Kaffe Fassett designs I was really drawn to knitting with all the colors. I started collecting yarns then also, for my next Kaffe Fassett I was making up in my mind... I knitted a grand total of 4 KF garments, not that much I know ...
The first book I bought was 'glorious knitting'. When I read it, I felt really encouraged to try out color combinations myself. I have knitted the 'big diamonds jacket' out of this book. As at time (early '90's ?) Rowan yarns were way to expensive, I used my own color scheme. I used lots of Pingouin yarns (my local yarn shop had a big sale). I also used lots of double and triple stranding of yarn, to get different blends of color. As you can see I had a big thing on purple ... I also tried to use different fibers - mohair, wool, silk, chenille, cotton .... you name it, it's there. I had to scale down the jacket a bit - the design uses 4 diamonds, I knitted 3 diamonds. Most KF designs are very oversized, but even though I am a short and round person, this was really hughe ... This jacket is more then 10 years old, and I still like it. I wear it rarely , it's very warm, more a coat then a jacket. There is not much need for a knitted coat here in Belgium, where winters tend to be not too cold, but mostly wet. It took me almost 18 months to knit this. More Kaffe Fassett pictures tomorrow.

square 14 and 15

I have almost run out of red yarn - so I decided to stretch it, and knit a square with a striped center (2 shades of red and pink). Then I knitted a square with a orangey brown center, and a variegated blue border. You can see what happens if you have lots of leftovers of brown cotton yarn and knitting with artificial light in the evening ! The jury is still out on these. I don't think I like them as such, but they probably will blend in with the other squares in the blanket. I am determined to knit this blanket from my stash. I'll have to decide now what other color to use for the center. I think I'll go for yellow.

square 13

My log-cabin afghan is coming along nicely. I was almost out of red yarn, but decided to use every inch of yarn I have left, and used 2 reds to knit the center of this square 13. Weird colors, but I like it.

swaps

what convinced me to start this was all the swaps and fun stuff that's going on in blogs !
I have been involved in the one skein secret pal swap in summer http://www.oneskein.com/secretpal.asp? and my upstream pal partner is just wonderfull ! Claudia sent me the most wonderfull parcel. In it : some bath goodies, chocolate (already consumed !), a book thingie (can't remember what's that called in English) and yarn ! Rowans summer tweed (always have wanted to try that out) and a beautifull skein of estonian 'evilla' yarn. Great color and great texture, and environmentally friendly processed. I think I will use it for felting. Any suggestions for a good pattern
Iemand suggesties ?

introduction

Maybe a better way to start a blog was by introducing myself ? I learned to knit a school, when I was about 8 years old. I really hated it then. They made me stay indoors during recreation, to finish my project; it was cotton knitted underwear !
In highschool the girls had home economics, and there we knitted also (age 12 to 14). And then it stopped.
I took it back up when my children were born - I liked making something with my own hands for them. From then on I always have been a moderate knitter - finishing 2/3 sweaters a year (for myself).
I have really begun knitting 'seriously' about 9 years ago, when I had to rest after knee surgery, and I discovered all the resources on the internet. I also started collecting yarn when discovering Kaffe Fassett designs. Now I knit averagely 30 projects a year (lots of small stuff), but still finishing 3 adult sweaters.
lately I have been suffering with my shoulder - I really should do it easy. I like smaller and lightweight project (like lace) now.
I have been considering starting a blog, but am afraid it will take away to much time from my knitting. Also, there are so many wonderfull and inspirational knitting blogs out there, that I feel I don't have much to add. My knitting is very humble, compared to all the masterpieces out there.

picked it back up again

I picked the log-cabin afghan back up again. I left it for other knitting (I just finished 3 lace projects). When I abandoned this project I was getting a bit tired of all the heavy cotton knitting on tiny needles. But now that I picked it up I know why I loved working on it. Combining all those colors is so satsifying ! I finished 12 squares now (11 on the picture) and I have run out of red now. I wanted a traditional quilt with red harts - I will have to get creative now. It still takes me around 4 hours to knit a square and I want a full size blanket. It sure will take some time before this is finished !

first post - one skein secret pal

I know, not very original. I don't think I can add lots to the wonderfull and inspiring knitting blogs you find all over the net, but I think it's a great way to connect and communicate.
Right now I am involved in the one skein secret pal exchange. The main goal was to send one skein of yarn to a pal abroad, and knit something for her in the last month (that was august). My downstream pal was Estelle in France. I sent her a pair of armwarmers, knitted from a skein of kool-aid dyed yarn. I used the flavors grape, lime and changing cherry. I bought the yarn on a local crafts market, it's handspun by a local spinner. She already mailed me that she liked it, it's always fun to give a gift that's really appreciated.
English is not my native tongue, so I want to apologize for any spelling or other errors.
