Crochet : part 2 - Haken : deel 2

I finished the 2d day of the crochet workshop. We will crochet 3 to 4 different 'strings', together this will form a necklace.

First step : crocheting eyelets. (I am making up the terminology here myself, don't know much about it. If anybody knows the correct term, I will hear it in the comments...)
Stap 1 : 'oogjes' haken.

Second step : crocheting 'branches'.
Stap 2 : 'takjes' haken.

Third step : crocheting round a wooden bead, attaching eyelets to the bead and then crocheting 'tubes'.

I wrestled with the 'crocheting tubes' part. Veerle crocheted this with a very fine silk thread, we could practise with a cotton yarn. I just could not get my head around the concept, and kept on goofing it up. I finally came up with this, but am not too happy with the the results.

Don't like my color choice too much, and I much prefer the look of the finer stuff. So I bought some extra beads and yarn when I got home.

Crocheting the fine stuff is not going great (yet). I increase and decrease at random. But I do like my color combinations better now. I probably crochet much looser then I am supposed to do. And to see those tiny stitches is not easy for my eyes. I need good daylight. I am curious if I will end up with a wearable necklace. Only one more workshop afternoon to finish this !

Something completely different : crochet - 't is eens iets anders : haken

An old friend sent me the link to this crochet website. This site is about crocheting jewelry, mostly very colorfull necklaces. I was studying the pictures to see how it was done, and noticed there are workshops. It started last tuesday, runs 3 afternoons, and at the end you have one personal and finished necklace to take home.
Veerle showed us examples of her necklaces, and also broughtseveral books to inspire us.

The fun part of starting a new project is of course selecting the colors and the materials. We will crochet 4 different parts of one bigger necklaces, incorporating several techniques. This first day we mainly worked with 2,mm and 2mm hooks. We will work with fine silk thread and 1mm hooks later on. At least, that's the idea. I already had to use a 1mm with the last task of the day (crocheting around a wooden bead). Apparently I am a very loose crocheter.

It was nice to see old acquintances again. Marie-Thérèse and Rei also attended the workshop in Leuven. And of course it's also nice to see so many new faces...very inspirational.

baby joy - babyvreugde

Several new moms and dads here at the office. I had to dig in my supply of baby hats to decorate all those little heads. (and after knitting the huge shawl, I really liked doing some nice quick projects).

Baby Zinder is showing a 3-peaked hat in 100% wool handpainted yarn. Doesn't he look supercute ?

Baby Willem-Jan is modeling the jester hat in Mountain colors Mountain Goat (mohair-wool). It's still cold here, and baby hats need covering !

Baby Jacob is the most recent addition. He wears an i-cord beanie, also in the mountain goat yarn.

All these hats were designed by Wooly wormhead (scroll down for the baby hats).

And this is a picture of baby Jan in a Koigu hooded jacket. I knit this before I had a blog, and before I took pictures. Jan is the older brother of baby Jacob, and is now a very active toddler. His mom sent me the picture. The jacket is still in the family and his younger brother will wear it soon. The pattern was given to me by an older lady in our knitting group (she makes tons of these in acrylic). I have made several in nice wools, and they are most of the time very appreciated.

All moms and dads were proud to show their offspring and their handknits to the world. My husband just told me he has 4 pregnant collegues. I guess I know what to do ...

daytrip to Leiden - dagje Leiden

Hanne Falkenberg
is one of my favorite knitwear designers. When I heard she would be in Leiden (Holland) to talk about her design proces, I decided to attend.

Leiden itself is a very nice, quintessential Dutch town. In the meantime, Carla has put an extensive report on her blog about the Hanne Falkenbergs talk. I cannot add much to that. I still like Hanne's designs, in the classic shetland yarn and they are very wearable. And although the kits are not cheap, you get a lot of knitting for your money. Just one small thing : you have to buy the kits in the colorways she has selected. For each pattern she has 10 to 15 possibilities, but still .... playing with color is one of the fun things to experiment with. Now she told us, that if you really want it, you can always ask a design in a different color (via the yarnstore of course). She has a warehouse full of yarn in Denmark, and more then 70 colours. You might get 'no' for an answer though, she decides which colours work for a design ... (especially the striped designs that incorparate several colours). I have substituded colors before (switching yarns from 2 kits), and now I have one unique design.

As promised, a picture of the shawl modeled. I like the design, it was fun and interesting to knit, but it's not 'me'. I still feel like I am wearing a table cloth. A very nice tablecloth that is, in a beautifull merino/silk blend. The problem with 'mystery' knitalongs, is that the outcome is indeed a mystery. So, lesson learned : in the future I will knit a pattern that I know I will like. Of course, you mis all the fun of a mailinglist, with all it's chatter and sharing of information and tips. I guess I am more of a procesknitter anyway.
Thanks to Marie-Paule for taking this picture during the KnitFlanders meeting in Ghent.

Lace - kantbreiwerk

My shawl 'dem-fisher-sin-fru' is finally blocked, you can see it here lying on my diningroom table. My table just was not big enough to do it all at once. Leen commented on my previous post that the end of a project is always difficult, because you built up a relationship with that project. And it was a long, monogamous relationship too. The last 2 months, I didn't knit anything else but this shawl. Not even a sock slipped through the queue.Every time a big project is finished, I feel sorry to say goodbye to knitting it. Often there is this feeling of imperfection too. But I am afraid this time that feeling of imperfection is correct. Not that there is anything wrong with my knitting, but the size of this shawl is just so huge, that it is unwearable for me. I still have to find somebody who can take a picture of it when I am wearing it (dragging over the floor more likely). En some glorious sunny springweather would be nice for pictures too. Please, weathergods ?

Alsjeblief weergoden ?
