en nu iets heel anders... and now for something completely different

In our household we travel to all kinds of places for our hobbies. My IronMan is supposed to run a marathon for his training schedule, and at the end of March there is the marathon of Rome, and the Marathon of Barcelona. I had a vote too, and so we will be on a plane to Catalonia tomorrow.

We are flying with a lowcost carrier, so handluggage only. Knitting needles tend to get confiscated at security, so I'll have to pack something else to entertain myself. AJ gave me some plastic crochet hooks, and at boekenfestijn I bought some books for inspiration.

But finally I found something in this book on my shelves, 'best of Interweave Crochet'

It's a small scarf in laceweight yarn. Ideal to use up this skein of alpaca-silk-cachmere, sitting in my stash since 2008. I am not really good at crochet, so I need to try out the pattern before I board the plane. The hardest thing in crochet is 'making a turn', making sure that you keep the right stitch count. Unfortunately, this pattern is text only, no chart.

The stitch pattern is very easy, but my turning needs improvement.

So off to find a crochet stitch I like, with charts. I'll have to swatch this evening, when I come back from my German evening course. Still time to pack tomorrow morning!

NB : my IronMan is injured. We will travel to Barcelona, but he won't be running the marathon. I hope he gets better soon, so that he can participate in the triathlon of Klagenfurt at the beginning of July !

gekikkerd - frogged

I could not resist cablemonth in the SKA-group. I started 'sottopassaggio' by yarnissima. It's a toe-up sock. The cable travels over the foot, and at the same time you do increases for the gusset.

'to frog' is breiwerk uithalen. 'Rip it'.
With this pattern row gauge is crucial. I am a loose knitter, so this sock is coming out too big in the foot. I guess I'll have to frog. Apropriate, because I am using Wollmeise in the color 'Frosch'! What's the sound of German frogs?

I guess I'll have to start over. Better stick to Wollmeise, I already have a good size swatch with these needles. What is it gonna be: 'Igor' on the left; or 'Mon Chéri' on the right?

Hmm. Misschien was Igor toch beter..Soms is breien twijfelen. Maar met twijfelen kom je niet vooruit.
Maybe I should have chosen Igor. But I don't feel like frogging again. I'll let it grow on me.

tussenin - inbetween...

Finished the first Clandestine sock in under a week. It's an intense sock to knit, but if you pay attention, totally do-able. Just one note: the sock is knit over 66 stitches. I am a loose knitter, usually a lace sock over 66 stitches would be way too wide for me. BUT: there are a lot of twisted stitches, and at the last row of the 'fan', there is some wrapping involved.
For me they come out just right, but for a tight knitter I would recommend going up a needle size.

The last days of February I was without sockproject. And besides slippedstitches, there was also a 'selfstriping' challenge in the sockknitters anonymous group. I cast on a sideways knit sock, but it did not really work out.

I really need an inbetween project, a project I can take along, and where I don't need to think. So I used the selfstriping yarn in another slipstitch sock.

I like the brown and blue combination. The yarn I used is Regia design line Kaffe Fassett. And a news flash: Kaffe Fassett is coming to my home town!

Maart - Clandestine : bruin/brown

The March sock in the Cookie knitalong is 'Clandestine'. In the book this sock is knit in a dark indigo blue 'Cookies dark secret'.

The March challenge for solid socks is 'brown'. I only have one hank of brown in my stash, this 'wolloase handgefarbt' in 'chocolat'. As a Belgian I know a bit about chocolat, and this does not look like a chocolat color at all. It is a nice reddish brown with a rosy-pink undertone; and it reminds me of nice Belgian beer...Cherry Lambic anyone?

And this is how my start looks like. I have to use the doublepointed sock needles, because I snapped my wooden circular needle doing the cables on Stalagmite...
