Elica Diamantifera socks

Het laatste patroon wat ik breide in de SockMadness was Elica Diamantifera.
Het patroon is ontworpen door Natalia Vasilieva. Ik ontving in SockMadness vorig jaar van haar als prijs een projectzakje, dus het leek gepast om deze sok daar in op te bergen. Zoals bij al haar ontwerpen zitten er wel wat 'twist&turns' in het patroon. Ik vind deze kabels op een gestreepte achergrond er heel mooi uitzien.
When I was out of competition I still knit one SockMadness pattern, Elica Diamantifera. It is designed by Natalia Vasilieva (skeincharmer on Ravelry) I kept it in the projectbag I won last year in SockMadness11, made by skeincharmer. That seemed apropriate…I love the look of this pattern, with the cables travelling over a striped background.

 

De hiel  heeft een aparte constructie, waar ik wel wat mee gesukkeld heb. Het lijkt wel of ik geen patroon meer kon lezen nu het niet meer ‘moest’! De focus was een beetje weg. Gelukkig was er in de Ravelrygroep veel informatie door andere behulpzame breisters. Elkaar verder op weg zetten, dat is het mooie van SockMadness.
The heel has a very odd construction, and  I struggled a bit with that part. I could not think anymore, maybe because of the hot weather, or maybe because I did not ‘have’ to think any more once I was out of the competition? Somehow I seem to have lost focus. Fortunately there was lots of information in the SockMadness group, with other knitters helping out.

Omdat ik een losse breister ben heb ik het patroon wat moeten aanpassen. Ik stopte de sok vroeger in de lengte, en minderde meer steken op de zool om ze beter te laten aanpassen. Ze zijn nog altijd wat groot voor mij, dus misschien wordt het weer een cadeautje. Ik heb me heel erg goed geamuseerd tijdens SockMadness12, een paar nieuwe dingen geleerd, en vooral veel steun en camaraderie gekregen in de groep. Misschien tot volgend jaar?
With my loose gauge I had to adapt the pattern to fit me. I stopped earlier for the length and reduced the numbers of stitches on the sole. They are still a bit big for me, so I will probably gift them to someone. 
I really enjoyed SockMadness12, largely because of the group. I had a great time! Maybe untill next year?

Pearls-on-a-string socks

 

Vlak voor we naar Ierland vertrokken kwam de materiaallijst voor de volgende sockmadness sok. Een sok in 1 kleur! Ik kon dus makkelijk maar 1 bol wol meenemen op reis. En toen ik het patroon zag, was ik blij met mijn kleurkeuze, medium jeansblauw. Parels-op-een-draadje is een patroon met veel kleine kabeltjes en verdraaide steken. In een donkere kleur zou al het detailwerk verloren gaan.

The day before we left for Ireland the specifications for the next sockmadness socks were published. A single colour sock! So I only had to pack one ball of yarn for this one. When I saw the pattern, I was happy with my colour choice for a medium denimblue. This 'Pearls-on-a-string' pattern has lots of small cables and twisted stitches. In a dark colour the lovely details would have gone lost.

 

Reizen en ingewikkelde sokken breien gaan niet goed samen. Het breien was voor 's avonds, overdag gingen we op stap en verkenden we Donegal.
Travelling and knitting sockmadness socks do not go together well for me. I knitted in the evening, during the day we explored Donegal.

Reizen en gezond eten gaan trouwens ook niet goed samen.

Dag drie was een regendag, toen heb ik een inhaalbeweging gebreid. Het patroon ziet er eenvoudig klassiek uit, maar is best veel werk om te breien. 

Day 3 was a rainy day, so I made a bit of a knitting sprint. The pattern looks like a classic cabled sock, but it is rather labour intensive to knit.

 

Het weer werd steeds zonniger en mooier. Zonde om binnen te zitten breien

. En toen lag ik uit de competitie, want andere teamleden waren sneller en alle plaatsjes waren opgevuld.

The weather became really sunny and glorious. It would have been a shame to stay inside and knit. And then my teammates were quicker, and all the spots were filled for this round, so that meant I was out of competion...

 De sokken heb ik daarna op mijn gemakje afgebreid. Ze zijn nét een beetje te groot voor mij, maar ik weet iemand die hier heel blij mee zal zijn. Nu kan ik de rest van de sockmadness op het gemak volgen, zonder tijdsdruk, alleen voor de fun.
I finished the socks afterwards at my leisure. They are slightly too big for me, but I know somebody who will be very happy with these. So now I can participate in the rest of the sockmadness without time limits, just for fun.

Expecto Draconum socks

Ik was naar Berlijn vertrokken in de veronderstelling dat het volgende sockmadness patroon pas zou gepubliceerd worden nadat ik terug thuis was. Behalve een klein sjaal-projectje voor op de trein had ik geen breibenodigheden mee, dus geen sokkenwol, of sokkennaalden... En toen de telefoon 'pling' deed in de botanische tuin moest ik op plan B overschakelen. Gelukkig zijn er wel wat wolwinkels in Berlijn. Herr U (of zijn echtgenoot?) hielp me een keuze maken.

I left for Berlin thinking that the next sockmadness pattern would be published when I would be back home. So, besides a small scarf project for the train travel, I did not bring any sockyarn, or sockneedles. So when the pattern dropped, I had to switch to plan B. Fortunately, there are several nice yarn stores in Berlin. Herr U (or his husband?) helped me decide on yarns for the project.

Ik kocht een effen kleurtje Jawoll, en handgeverfde wol van Chestnut Cabin. Het is een Nederlands merk, maar blijkbaar is de wol Duits, en worden er speciale kleuren geverfd die alleen bij Herr U te koop zijn. Deze zijn in het thema van de sprookjes van Grimm. Grappig genoeg hebben deze twee strengen dezelfde kleurnaam? Vreemd, maar ik vond het mooi. Ik kocht ook nog een nieuw type naalden, de CraSyTrio.

I bought some solid Lang Jawoll, and some handdyed Chestnut Cabin. This is a Dutch brand, but apparently the yarn is German, and there are custom colours that are dyed especially for the yarn shop in Berlin. The colours are named after brother Grimm fairy tales, and these two hanks have the same colour name... which looks strange to me, but I liked them anyway. I also bought a new type of needles, the CraSyTrio by Addi. I think they are called flexitips in the States.

Zo ziet het begin van de drakensok er dan uit. Ik doe de kabels zonder kabelnaald, ik gebruik een draadje wol als markeerder en ik lees het schema op de tablet (met veel scrollen). Dat zijn oplossingen die het breien net iets minder goed vooruit doen gaan.  Als ik 's avonds zit uit te puffen op mijn appartementje in Berlijn,  vraag ik me af waarom ik moe ben. Antwoord: de stappenteller zegt dat ik 14 km gestapt heb. Vermoeidheid helpt natuurlijk ook niet voor de concentratie, maar al bij al lukt het begin van deze sok toch verrassend goed.

This how the beginning of my Dragon Sock looks like. I do the cables without a cable needle, I use yarn as a stitch marker, en I read the pattern on my tablet (with lots of scrolling). All those things don't speed up the knitting. On top of that, I am really tired - turns out I have walked 14 km that day. Berlin is a very big city!

 

Op de treinreis vanuit Berlijn is mijn sok de mist in gegaan… Ik maakte het mezelf ook niet gemakkelijk door een donkere hoofdkleur en een bleke draak te breien, andersom dan in het patroon.

I making it difficult for myself by knitting a pale Dragon on a dark background, the other way around as in the pattern (confusing with the chart, I have to pay attention).On the train ride home, everything went wrong, which results in five hours of knitting for nothing.

De gummitreintjes van de Duitse spoorwegen waren een beetje troost. Morgen met een fris hoofd die wreefminderingen opnieuw beginnen!
But the German rail had some cute sweets  to help me overcome my dissappointment. I'll have to restart that gusset with a clear head!

Uitgehaald en opnieuw begonnen: thuis gaat concentreren zoveel beter. Ik heb echt mijn vast breiplekje nodig, met een comfortabele zetel en goed licht. Alleen moet ik wel weer aan de arbeid, dus de sok moet 's morgens vroeg en 's avonds afgewerkt worden. In de wedstrijd gaat het opeens hard vooruit, de andere deelnemers racen voor de 10 beschikbare plaatsen in deze ronde!

Frogged and back on track…concentration is so much easier at home… I need my comfortable couch and good lighting to knit these. I have to knit these early in the morning before leaving for work, and late in the evening. In the competition the other participants are racing for the 10 available spots in this round.

Aan de teen aangekomen, is het een goed moment om mijn nieuwe CraSyTrio naalden te gebruiken. Dit zijn 3 korte, flexibele naalden. Als techniek gebruik je een combinatie van 'breien op 2 rondbreinaalden' en 'magicloop', met als voordeel dat je geen lange kabel moet doortrekken.

I used the Addi CraSyTrio on the toes. It’s a mix between knitting on 2 circulars and magicloop, but no long cables to pull through.

Klaar! met hindernissen, op minder dan een week, toch niet slecht vind ik. Ik ben er in elk geval heel blij mee.

Finished in under a week, even with the setbacks I had. I am very proud of these socks.

Safe Harbor socks

De volgende sockmadness sok, Safe Harbor, is een sok met een ajourmotief. Zou zo een gespikkeld garen daarvoor werken?
Would a speckled yarn work for the next sockmadness pattern?

In het begin twijfelde ik even of dit garen een goede combinatie was met het patroon, maar anderen aan wie ik het liet zien vonden het geslaagd, de spikkels verdoezelen het patroon niet.
I was a bit unsure of it at first, but I think it works. The speckles do not obscure the pattern.

Ik heb deze 'vlinder'-steek trouwens al eens in een paar sokken gebruikt, volgens mijn Ravelry-projecten breide ik deze in 2012. Hier loopt het patroon achter op het been en over de hiel, en die grote gaten op de hiel is eigenlijk niet comfortabel bij het dragen. Daarom draag ik deze sokken niet zo veel.
I used the sames stitchpattern once on another sock, back in 2012 (according to my Ravelry-projects). The stitch is used here on the back of the leg, running over the heel, and frankly, those big holes over the heel are not comfortable when wearing the socks. That's why I only wear those socks with clogs.

Ik heb net sok 1 af, en die wordt weer te lang. Dan maar een lifeline en straks een stukje opnieuw breien. Misschien maar goed ook, ik heb van deze wol maar 80gram, en de eerste sok weegt 43gram.
I myself have just finished the first sock. And again, they are too long in the foot, so I put in a lifeline… 

Klaar, en wachten op goedkeuring.
Gelukkig hebben we opmerkzame moderatoren op het sokkenforum. Ik heb blijkbaar bij de eerste sok 20 patroonherhalingen gedaan in plaats van19. De eerste sok vond ik te lang. Bij de tweede dacht ik ‘ze zitten precies toch wél goed’. Nu weet ik waarom.
Voordeel is dat ik nu maar bij 1 sok de teen moet uithalen en een stukje opnieuw breien ...
I think I suffer from some kind of ‘knitters blindness’, not to be able to see my own mistakes…
Fortunately we have some very attentive mods. Karin pointed out to me that one of my socks has 20 repeats, and the other has the required 19 repeats. No wonder I thought the second sock (turns out the shorter one) felt better at my feet. And I was relieved that I wan the game of yarn chicken…
I only have to shorten one sock now.

 Klaar! Eigenlijk vond ik dit een makkelijke sok, na een paar keren kende ik het patroon uit het hoofd. Het zijn gaatjessokken voor een koele zomerdag (of voor mijn volgende reis naar Ierland)...

I wanted them to be finished before we leave on holiday, and for me this was a rather easy pattern, I could memorize the lace after a few repeats.

Ik loop een beetje achter met bloggen. Reizen en breien en bloggen is een moeilijke combinatie! Jullie krijgen nog een verslag van mijn reis naar Berlijn, waar ik overvallen werd door alweer het volgende patroon voor de sockmadness, en dus wel wol 'moest' kopen.
A bit behind with blogging... travelling, knitting and blogging is a hard combination! You are still due to a blogpost about my trip to Berlin, where I 'had' to buy yarn for the next sockmadness sock!

Checkbox socks

 

Het was even wachten op het tweede patroon van de sockmadness, maar dan vlak voor ik een dagje op uitstap ging landde het patroon in de mailbox. Een sok met briocheblokjes! Spannend! Spikkels en een Jawolleke gingen mee op de trein naar Antwerpen…

We had to wait a bit for the second Sockmadness pattern, but it landed in my mailbox finally, just before I was on my way for a day out. I took these two yarns with me on the train, hoping to be able to cast on. 

 

Blij met mijn kleuren! Maar ze lijken mij wel wijd worden. Ik brei over 60 steken, mijn standaard stekenaantal, maar van brioche is gekend dat het een heel rekbare steek is.  Ik ben de boord begonnen op 2mm, de briocheblokjes brei ik op 1.75mm.

Very happy with my colors, but I am afraid the sock is running too wide. I am doing the sock over 60 stitches on 1.75mm needles, my default stitch count and needle size. It is commonly known that brioche is a very stretchy stitch. Fingers crossed this will work...

Sok 1 is af na 3 dagen. Gelukkig heb ik al wat ervaring met briochesteek, maar toch moet ik nog goed opletten, vooral op de rij waar het blokje verspringt.Veel breisters hebben ook problemen met de hiel, maar dat ging hier goed. Het vraagt wel  concentratie, en goed 'lezen', zowel van het patroon als van mijn werkje. Begin van de week is het druk op het werk, en 's avonds ben ik soms zo moe dat ingewikkelde dingen breien echt niet lukt. Mijn oplossing is dan: vroeg gaan slapen, en 's morgens met een helder hoofd een stukje voortbreien. Maar het valt de collega's wel op dat ik een uurtje later arriveer! 
I finish sock 1 after 3 days of knitting. Fortunately, I have some brioche experience and I am able to read my knitting, so I can undo when I make a mistake. Usually that is on the row where the blocks change. Several knitters struggle with the heel, but here, all goes well.  After work I am sometimes so tired that I cannot concentrate on a complicated knit, so I did some morning knitting.  I did get comments from my coworkers for showing up one hour later then usuall!

 

Bij sok 2 wisselde ik van kleur. Het wordt spannend of ik genoeg van het donkere garen heb om deze sok uit te breien, maar kijk, het is toch gelukt.

I made the second sock 'fraternal'. I am playing a game of yarn chicken, so that speeds up the knitting also, and I made it! I even had a bit leftover.

Klaar. Voor de wedstrijd moet je een bepaald aantal blokjes breien. Ze werden dus te groot voor mezelf, misschien passen ze de dochter?  Ik heb er een lifeline in zitten, dus  een deel uithalen en de teen opnieuw breien kan ik doen. Maar nu laat ik ze even zo. Grappig om te zien hoe dezelfde kleuren toch een heel ander effect geven als je hoofd- en contrastkleur verwisselt. Welke vinden jullie het mooist effect geven?

Finished! I put in a lifeline to be able to frog easily, withouth dropping stitches in brioche. But first I will ask my daughter if she likes them. She has bigger feet, so if she wants them, I am finished. Otherwise, just toes to reknit. It is funny to see that only switching main and contrast color can have such a different effect. Which one do you like best?

Blackberry socks

Voor de sockmadness begint krijg je een lijst van materialen die zullen gebruikt worden in de verschillende patronen. Ik zag al direct dat er een sok met kraaltjes bij was, niet echt mijn favoriete techniek. Ik hoopte dus dat dit niet het eerste patroon zou zijn, maar helaas, we begonnen met de kraaltjes...

Before the sockmadness starts, you receive a list with the materials you need for all the patterns. I noticed there was a beaded sock pattern, not really my favorite technique. I hoped that we would not start with the beads, but fate decided otherwise...

Met mijn nieuwe haaknaald 0.45mm ging het kraaltjes oprijgen nog redelijk vlot. Goed materiaal is het halve werk!
In Dutch we have the proverb 'good materials make the job half done', so I was very glad with my new ultra-thin crochet hook.

 Dit was toch weer iets nieuws voor mij: kralen die in clusters van 13 op één lange steek worden geregen. Daarna leg je dan een knoopje in je steek, en voilà: besjes op een struik. Mijn kralen zijn transparant, en nemen de kleur van de ondergrond aan. Ik noem het dan maar sneeuwbesjes.

To achieve the look of clusters of berries on a shrub, you bead one elongated stitch with 13 beads, and then knot it. A bit fiddly, but doable. My beads are slightly transparant, so I am calling mine 'snowberries'.

Daarna ga je aan de slag met naald en draad om takjes en blaadjes op de sok te mazen. Toen ik in de jaren 80 truien breide heb ik veel gemaasd, maar nu was het toch alweer een tijdje geleden!
Next step: Swiss darning over the sock to finish the stalk and leaves. When I started knitting, back in the eighties, I have darned a lot of sweaters, but that is some time ago. But it is like bicycle riding, once you learned it, it comes back. Maybe not perfect... I would need more practise.

En nu afwachten wat het volgende patroon brengt..
And now the waiting game for the next pattern has started...

La Fée Dragée

 

De kwalificatiesok van de SockMadness heet Fée Dragée, naar een personage uit de Notenkraker van Tjaikovski. En ondanks de zoeterige naam, de suikerfee, kan dit simpele patroon ook goed voor een man gebreid worden, hoera! Het hangt vooral van de kleurenkeuze af. Deze zijn dan ook bestemd voor de zoon met de grote voeten, die altijd nieuwe sokken nodig heeft.
The qualification sock for SockMadness is called Fée Dragée. And despite its sugarsweet name, it is a pattern that is suitable for men. Dear Son with the big feet always needs new socks, so I choose 'manly' colors to knit these.

Ik gebruikte Zauberball, en het is altijd een beetje afwachten hoe de lange kleurherhalingen zich gedragen in een sok. Soms kan dat verkeerd uitpakken. Eerlijk gezegd, ik heb het hier een beetje gemanipuleerd, zodat de zoon toch ongeveer gelijke zwarte benen had. Voor de kwalificatie moet je het aantal patroonherhalingen aanduiden met markeerringetjes of een markeerdraad, zodat het duidelijk is dat je het minimum vereist aantal rijen gedaan hebt. Ik deed meer, dus ik heb de norm ruim gehaald.
I used Zauberball, and it's always a bit of a gamble how the colors work with those long repeats. Sometimes this goes very wrong... To be fair, I did manipulate the yarn a bit, so that my son has at least matching black legs on his socks. To qualify for the competion you had to mark the minumum required number of repeats on the socks. I did more repeats, so no problem there!
