een tipje van de sluier : gestart in January, een ideaal reisproject, en toen bleef het liggen...
It was an ideal travel project in januari, but I had trouble getting it finished.

Op zoek naar de perfecte vorm voor een omslagdoek - experiment 1 : brei een vierkante sjaal. Dit is de Stonington shawl, ontwerp door Elizabeth Zimmermann. Een klassieker, gebreid in hedendaagse kantwol - Wollmeise in de kleur 'ein klein wenig verrucht'.
I am looking to find the for me perfect shawlshape, and I decided to knit a square shawl. This is a classic design by Elizabeth Zimmermann, the Stonington shawl, knit in Wollmeise lace in the color 'ein klein wenig verrucht'.

Maar hoe draag je zo'n vierkante sjaal?
But how do you wear a square shawl?

Je kan er een rechthoek van vouwen...
You can fold it into a rectangle...

... en dan heb je een kleine schoudersjaal.
... and that results in a small shouldershawl.

... of de klassieke driehoek?
... or the traditional triangle?

Maar ja, dan heb dus een driehoeksjaal, wel met een dubbele laag, maar ik wou eens iets anders dan een driehoek...
But then you just get a double-layered triangle, and my aim was to knit something else then 'just a triangle'.

Dit vind ik dan nog de beste manier. Hoe zou je dit best omschrijven? Een kleine driehoek op een grotere driehoek? 2 overlappende driehoeken? In elk geval nog niet perfect. Ik ga nog wat meer experimenteren met de vorm van omslagdoeken...binnenkort is het kerstvakantie, extra veel breitijd!
I like this way best, not sure how to describe it - a smaller triangle on top of a larger triangle? 2 overlapping triangles? It's not perfect. I am still looking for the perfect shawl shape. In 2 weeks I have christmas holidays, I am hoping for some extra knitting time!

een hete herfst - autumn: the lull before the storm

Heet was de herfst misschien niet, maar wel zonnig. En vruchtbaar, toch op breigebied. Jaarlijks organiseert Woolly Wormhead een 'mystery knitalong' in November. Ik heb de 'mysteries' een beetje afgezworen, maar voor haar mutsen maak ik graag een uitzondering, vooral omdat de online feedback tijdens de knitalong fantastisch is, zowel van de ontwerper als van de medebreisters in de Ravelry groep.
Well, I don't know if the storm is coming, but I am certainly prepared. I took part in the yearly mystery KnitAlong by Woolly Wormhead.I have had it a bit with mystery knitalongs, but I do make an exception for the Woolly Wormhead one. I love her hat designs, and the online support you get during the knitalong is outstanding.

Stap 1 is natuurlijk : het proeflapje. Een muts moet goed passen. Voor ontwerp A wisten we dat het een baret zou worden, met ajour en kabeltjes. Voor zoiets wou ik een glad garen in een effen kleur.
Step 1 and very important : swatch. A hat has to fit right. We knew that design A would be a beret, with a bit of lace and cables. So I was looking for a smooth yarn in a solid color.

Mijn keuze: een dikke sokkenwol van FrauWolle in Oostenrijk, handgeverfd indigo.
I choose a heavy sockyarn, handdyed indigo by FrauWolle in Austria.

Voor muts B kregen we te horen dat iets gevlamd, zelfs met meerdere kleuren, goed zou werken, en dat het om een 'slouchy beanie' ging. (wie een goede vertaling hiervoor kent, mag het mij laten weten!)
We got the message that for hat B a variegated sockyarn would work, and that we would be knitting a slouchy beanie.

Boven in helderrood : Wollmeise in de kleur 'Mon Chéri', en onderaan Sokkusu lightweight 100% merino in een onbekende kleur.

Ik heb de beste stekenproef met de Sokkusu, met de Wollmeise wordt de muts te groot. Jammer, want ik denk qua kleur dat dat ook mooi zou geweest zijn. Het grootste deel van de muts is averechts met een klein detail, een schuin lijntje in een rechts verdraaide steek. Dat maakt dat je minder gevlamd/gestreept hebt, wel mooi doorlopende kleuren.
Swatched with Wollmeise and Sokkusu, and I got gauge with the Sokkusu, plus I did not like the striping in the Wollmeise for a hat.
I finished the body, the hat is mainly purled with a small detail of a travelling stitch. In retrospect, the Wollmeise would have worked also. (no striping on the purl side!), but then the hat would be too big for me...

Voor de afwisseling brei ik muts A, je moet een beetje meer concentreren, maar echt moeilijk is het niet. En af en toe kan ik weer het kabelen zonder kabelnaald oefenen.
It's nice to switch to the other hat, you need to concentrate a bit more, but still a quite easy knit. And I get to practise my 'cabling without a cable needle' also.

Woolly Wormhead staat erom bekend dat ze veel aandacht heeft voor hoe de minderingen boven op de mutsen verwerkt worden tot een decoratief patroon.
Woolly Wormhead is know for her attention to how the decreases form a decorative crown shaping.

Bij een te gemakkelijk werkje maak je soms fouten, dus uithalen en opnieuw beginnen, maar nog altijd een 'quick knit'. Ik vind het ontwerp met de spiraalvormige minderingen heel geslaagd.
I had to reknit part of the decreases, but other then that, a nice, relatively quick knit. I love how the decreases spiral around the hat.


De zon schijnt en de dochter is thuis, dus tijd voor een fotoreeks...

Ik vind mezelf toch meer een 'baret'-type. De 'beanie' zal een kerstcadeautje zijn bij de doorgeefcarroussel in de hobbyclub. Hopelijk is de mystery ontvanger blij met haar mystery muts!
I like berets better then beanies. That one will be a mystery present for our hobbyclub. Hopefully the mystery recipient will be happy with her mystery hat!

kink in de kabel - cable/cable

Dit weekend in 'De Morgen'-magazine - een verhaal over de favoriete kabeltrui van verschillende mensen.
Our weekend paper has an extra magazine. Featured article : people talking about their favourite cabled sweater.

Ik heb hier ook nog zo'n exemplaar liggen. Zon' 10-12 jaar oud. Van voor ik eigenlijk echt goed kon breien, er zit dus een kink in de kabel. En heel erg warm, alpaca-wol. Een trui die ik niet zoveel draag. En kabels brei ik ook niet zo veel. Ik ben een trage breister, en altijd die hulpnaald erbij nemen vertraagt nog meer.
I have one of those lying around myself. It's at least 12 years old, when I was not an advanced knitter yet. So, some of the cables are not perfect. I don't knit much cables. I am a slow knitter, and taking that extra needle slows me down even more.

Maar je kan ook kabelen zonder kabelnaald. Nu ben ik een sjaaltje begonnen met veel kabels. Als deze af is zal ik de techniek in de vingers hebben!
But you can cable without a cable needle. I have started this scarf - lots of practise to do it without an extra needle. When I will have finished this scarf, I will be perfect at cabling without a needle...

november - herfst/autumn

Het kleurenthema voor november is 'herfst'.
The color theme for November is 'autumn'.

Ik woon dan wel op een appartementje in de stad, maar ook hier zie je duidelijk dat het herfst is.
And although I live on an appartment in the city, even I notice autumn everywhere.

De wilde wingerd die langs onze achtergevel slingert kleurt donkerrood.
The virginia creeper on our facade turns crimson red (had to look that up!).

De bomen in het park tonen alle tinten van geel, oranje en roestbruin.
The trees in the park show off with all shades of yellow, orange en brown.

Dit is de meest 'herfstige' streng sokkenwol in mijn voorraadkast, Wollsinn Aquarell in kleur 'roter Stang' (gekocht op de Ravelry bijeenkomst in Duitsland, half oktober).
This is the most 'autumny' skein of sockyarn in my stash, Wollsinn Aquarell in color 'roter Stang' (bought at the Ravelry meeting in Germany, half October).

Maar herfst is ook : paddenstoelen in het park.
Autumn is also : mushrooms in the park.

... en vlierbessen die over de muur van de kerktuin hangen, de sint-Kwintenskerk waar ik elke dag voorbijwandel.
... and elderberry hanging over the wall of our parish churchyard.

Dit is misschien een goede paddenstoelbruin?
This might work as a nice mushroom brown color?

En ik haal nog eens de streng Moonwise Gems uit de kast. Het paars is haast zwartblauw, net als bij de vlierbessen.
And once again I pet my skein of Moonwise Gems. This purple is nearly black, just like the elderberries.

Patroon van de maand is 'Gothic spire'. Dit is 1 van de sokken in het boek die ik niet echt zie zitten, en al zeker niet in een donkere kleur. Het lijkt me een ingewikkeld patroon, met een voor mij nieuwe techniek, omwikkelde steken.
The Cookie KAL October pattern is 'Gothic spire'. This is one of the few patterns that I really don't like in the book. I just don't feel like casting on right now. It looks like a complicated sock, involving a new to me technique, wrapped stitches

Omdat ik wat laat begonnen ben met de knitalong heb ik nog deze sok in te halen : Mona, een gemakkelijk ajourpatroontje, met net genoeg details om het interessant te houden.
Because I joined the knitalong a bit late, I still have to do a 'catchup' sock - Mona. It's an easy lace pattern, a relaxing knit, with just enough detail to keep you interested.

Het begin ziet er al veelbelovend uit in donkerpaars.
I like how it looks in the dark purple.

En door het herfsthema was ik geïnspireerd om nog wat ander projecten te starten, en nee 't zijn niet allemaal sokken...
I got a bad case of startitis - I started multiple projects in autumny colors, and for a change, not all socks.

sokkenoogst - photoshoot!

Ik heb hier al veel beginnetjes van CookieA sokken getoond, maar ik zie dat ik nog niet geblogd heb over de 'afjes'. 't Was mooi weer, herfstvakantie, de dochter was thuis... tijd dus voor een photoshoot!
The last time I have shown here on this blog several socks I have started, but I haven't posted about the FO's yet. This week we had some glorious weather, DD was at home, so it was time for a catch-up photoshoot!

Dit was mijn 'inhaalsok' voor september, omdat ik de knitalong een beetje later dan de rest begonnen ben. Helemaal zoals in het boek gebreid, zonder aanpassingen, maat S(small) over 60 steken. En dat rood is nog steeds een moeilijke kleur om te fotograferen...in 't echt is de kleur iets roder, minder oranjerood.

This was my September 'catch-up' sock, because I joined the knitalong a bit late. No modifications, knit size small (60 stitches). Red is still a hard color to take a picture of. In real life it's a little less orangey.

Er is maar 1 maat in het boek,gebreid over 66 steken. Ze zijn een beetje te slobberig geworden, ajour is altijd losser dan kabels. Deze had ik beter op een kleiner naaldje gebreid, maar mijn 2.25mm had net de geest gegeven, en dat is zo'n tussenmaatje dat je hier moeilijk vindt.

Knit over 66 stitches, there is only one size in the book. They came out a bit loose, I should have knit these with a smaller needle...

Helemaal volgens patroon gebreid. Er zijn veel opties om ze op maat te breien, want er zijn 4 voetmaten en 8 'shaping'-maten. Hiervoor moet je je kuitomtrek meten, kniekousen moeten echt goed aanpassen! Ik heb voetmaat 1, en kuitmaat 2.

needles : wooden knitpro circular, magicloop, 2.5mm
Knit exactly according to pattern, footsize 1, shaping size 2. You can customize them, there is extensive sizing (4 foot sizes and 8 shaping sizes). A good fit is essential for kneesocks.

Laat het nu maar koud worden!

october : lissajous paars/purple

Het Cookie patroon voor oktober is 'Lissajous'. Die bestaat in sok-versie...
The Cookie october pattern is 'Lissajous'. It comes in sock version...

... of als kniekous. Toen ik deze zag in het allereerste nummer van Twist collective , was ik helemaal verliefd. Ik moest en zou die breien. Maar ik had nog nooit kniekousen gebreid, en daar zag ik toch wat tegen op. Nu heb ik al wat meer vertrouwen in mijn breikunst. Het moet lukken. Ook al draag ik ze misschien nooit, zo'n kunststuk moet in mijn sokkenschuif liggen.
...or as a knee stocking. I knew the first time I saw these that I had to knit them. The pattern was first published 3 years ago in 'twist collective', but at that time I could not see myself knitting such a complicated stocking. Now I do.

De kleur van de maand is paars. Mijn lievelingskleur! (en oranje natuurlijk)
And the color of the month is purple, my favorite color! (next to orange of course)


Er zijn zoveel schakeringen in paars. Donkerblauw paars bvb met een indigo ondertoon, zoals hier in Moonwise gems garen. Grr... ik wil linken, maar blogger werkt niet mee, en na 3 keer proberen geef ik het op. Google brengt je wel op de juiste plaats als je de handgeverfde garens van Janneke wil zien...
There are many shades of purple. I have some very dark blueish purple, with a hint of indigo in Moonwise gems yarn.

of dit mooie roodpaarse, op de rand van roze/fuchsia. Maar toch ook wel paars. Dit garen is iets dikker,Blackberry ridge tightwist 100% wool fingering .
or this very nice redpurple, almost pink/fuchsia, but definitely purple. This is a slightly heavier weight sockyarn, Blackberry ridge tight twist 100% wool fingering.

Of een heel licht lavendelkleur in luxueuze sokkenwol met kasjmier? Garen is Bugga in de kleur 'blue acmon'. Dat is een vlindertje, de Bugga garens hebben al hun kleuren naar insecten genoemd.
Or maybe a very light lavender color in a luxurous yarn? (Bugga! in the color 'blue acmon')?

Maar ik wil echt kniekousen, en dan kom ik met 1 bol niet toe. De enige kandidaat is dus dit garen, Old Maiden Aunt BFL in de kleur 'derelict daughter' (genoemd naar een Anna di Franco song).
I really want to do the stockings, so one skein is not enough. The only candidate is the Old Maiden Aunt BFL; color 'derelict daughter'.

Ik moet me heel erg concentreren bij de start....
I need to concentrate at the start...

... maar het wordt makkelijker. En het lijkt misschien zo niet op deze foto, maar nu ben ik blij dat ik korte beentjes heb.
... but it does get easier. And you would not say it seeing this picture, but I do have short legs and in this case that's a plus.
