Hibiscus

Ik houd van kleurrijke projecten en ik probeer graag nieuwe technieken uit. De Ierse ontwerper Kieran Foley heeft zeker een paar ontwerpen die aan die criteria voldoen! Toen hij 'ontwerper van de maand' was in de Colorwork groep op Ravelry jeukte het om nog eens een kantsjaal te breien. Ik koos voor dit ontwerp, Hibiscus. Hierin worden 'gestapelde minderingen' gebruikt, een techniek die ik nog niet uitprobeerde.
I like colorfull projects and I like to try out new techniques. So when the Irish designer Kieran Foley was selected for the next knitalong in the colorworkgroup, I choose this pattern, Hibiscus. This pattern incorporates 'stacked decreases', a technique I wanted to try out to see the effect.

Voor mijn eerste poging gebruikte ik kantgarens, in kleuren die me een beetje aan het landschap in Ijsland deden denken. Maar ik maakte een paar foutjes (alhoewel het patroon niet zo moeilijk is), en ik was toch niet overtuigd door het dunne breisel en mijn kleurkeuze...
First try using more sedated colors, they remind me of the landscape in Iceland… but I am not convinced by the colors, nor the flimsy fabric that I am creating...Add in a few mistakes, and I decided to start over.

 

 

Veel tevredener nu met het resultaat in sokkenwol. Ik gebruik Lang Magic degradé in grijsblauw, roest en groen, en allerlei resten blauw. Alleen ziet het ernaar uit dat ik niet genoeg blauw zal hebben, dus misschien moet ik er wat paars aan toevoegen?
Much happier with the knitted fabric in sockyarn. I am using Lang degradé grayish blue/rust/green and all sorts of blues as contrast. I might run out of blue, so I am thinking of adding some purple.

 

Halverwege twijfel ik toch weer. Ik vind de brede puntige banen waarmee de sjaal begint mooi, maar daarna schakelt het patroon over op smallere motieven. En dat paars en groen erbij doen was misschien toch geen goed idee. Het eindresultaat zal er ongetwijfeld beter uitzien na opspannen van de sjaal (hoop ik).

Ik herhaalde de brede banen aan het einde van de sjaal. Ik vind het patroon meer gebalanceerd zo, de twee helften spiegelen elkaar zonder identiek te zijn. En ja, uitspelden en opspannen met 'blocking wires' maakt in dit geval een groot verschil.
Finished by repeating two times the pointy chevrons that were in the beginning of the pattern. The pattern is to me more balanced this way, by echoeing the start. And yes, the blocking wires did their magic, it looks so much better!

Dit was een plezant én interessant patroon om te breien, maar ik ben niet zo tevreden over het resultaat. De sjaal is een beetje te kort voor mijn gevoel. Ik had deze natuurlijk gemakkelijk nog wat langer kunnen breien, maar eerlijk gezegd was ik het een beetje moe, en mijn garen was bijna op. Ik vind dit zo'n patroon dat zegt 'kijk ma, zonder handen!'. Er worden veel verschillende steekpatronen gebruikt, veel kleuren... écht een sjaal die een breister zou dragen als ze naar een wolfestival gaat, om te showen. Ik brei heel graag dit soort projecten, maar eigenlijk zou ik wat meer klassieke, gewone truien en kledingstukken moeten breien (maar die zijn soms saai om te doen). Gezocht: patronen met uitdaging die er toch simpel uitzien!
This was a fun knit; but I am not so happy with the finished object. It’s a bit short to my liking, but of course I could have made it longer, I was just tired of knitting it.
In my mind, this is an example of ‘look Ma, no hands’- kind of pattern, experimenting with lots of stitch patterns, wild colors, … something a knitter would wear attending a Wool festival. I love to knit these kind of projects, because there is always something going on, but I really should knit some more ‘staples’ to wear…So, I am looking for challenging patterns that look very simpe in the finished garment!

Wol gebruikt: hoofdkleur - Lang Magic degradé (zat in de goody bag bij Knit-in-public-day - Juli 2018 't Wolwinkeltje Leuven). Contrastkleur: allerlei resten sokkenwol in blauw, groen en paars.
Kooppatroon via KnitLab - als cadeau gekregen juli 2018 - dus mijn voornemen om patronen te gebruiken die ik al lang in mijn bezit heb is hier ook weer overboord gegooid. Oh, de verleiding om het nieuwste eerst uit te proberen! (new and shiny, noemen ze dat in het Engels...)

Yarn in Stash: Main Color is Lang Magic Degradé (was in the goody bag from the local yarnstore - world wide knit in public day July 2018. Contrastcolor - all kinds of sockyarn leftovers in blue, turquoise, purple and green.
Pattern was a gift from another knitter, gifted July 2018 - so I did not really stick to my intention to use patterns I already have in my possesion. Oh, the new and shiny!
