Op-Art socks - Albers

De volgende uitdaging uit het boek Op-Art socks zijn deze modulair gebreide sokken, genoemd naar de Duitse kunstenaar Jozef Albers. Deze is sok opgebouwd uit vierkantjes die op verschillende manieren aan elkaar gebreid worden. In het boek is het patroon uitgewerkt in effen violet en beige, 2 kleuren met veel contrast.

The next challenge from the book Op-Art sock are these modulair knit socks, named after the german artist Jozef Albers.  In the book the socks are knit in contrasting solid colors, violet and sand.

Ik koos voor gevlamd groen en effen blauwgroen. Iets minder contrast dus. Eigenlijk is het haast dezelfde kleur, maar een andere intensiteit, diepte van kleur. Ik hoop dat zo de sokken niet te wild worden, toch nog draagbaar.
I am using 2 yarns (leftovers from stash) that are the same color (bluegreen), but anoterh intensity. That way these socks will not to be loud.

En zo ziet het begin van de sok er dan uit. Ik ben niet zo gek van vierkantjes breien,en zeker niet voor sokken, maar omdat ik met deze knitalong meedoe wil ik het nog eens proberen.
I am not too keen on modular socks, but for the sake of the KAL I am giving it another try (my first ever modular sock was a disappointment).

Na 3 vierkantjes brei je een zigzag smal reepje, waarmee je de vierkantjes verbindt. En daar bovenop komen er weer vierkantjes.
After 3 squares you knit a stairstep connecting piece. On top of that there are more squares.

Het brede deel is de manchet van de sok die je aaneen naait, je hebt dus een naad op het been. Het smalle deel is de bovenvoet.
The broad part is the cuff of the sock, the narrow part is the upper foot. You have to sew together the cuff, so you have a seam on the leg.

En zo zien ze er dan uit als ze af zijn. De optische illusie is misschien iets minder dan in het origineel, het gaat wat verloren door het gevlamde garen. De constructie is ingenieus, maar ik heb heel wat aanpassingen moeten doen om de sokken voor mij passend te maken. Gelukkig was er de online Ravelry samenbreigroep, waar we tips uitwisselden en aanpassingen bediscussieerden.
And these are the finished socks. In retrospect, my yarn choice was not the best, the optical illusion gets lost. The construction of these socks is very clever, but I had to adjust several parts to make these socks fit me. Luckily there was the on-line Ravelry group, where we exchanged tips and discussed modifications.

Ik ben blij dat ik deze sokken uigeprobeerd heb. Ze passen, maar ik ben nog steeds niet overtuigd dat modulair gebreide sokken een goed idee zijn...
I am glad I tried these out. They fit OK, but I am still not convinced that modular socks are a good idea…
