haapsalu sall

Ik heb een boek besteld over traditionele kanten sjaals uit Estland. Het heet 'Haapsalu sall' - Haapsalu is de badplaats waar deze sjaals gebreid werden als souvenir voor de adellijke dames die daar kwamen kuren.
I ordered a book on knitting lace shawls in Estonia. It's called 'Haapsalu sall', and it's filled with beautifull pictures of the traditional lace knitting of this Estonian beach resort.

Mijn favoriete patroon tot nu toe (maar dat verandert wel eens} is te zien op p.135 en heet 'Viljapekiri'. Iemand die Ests spreekt en weet wat dit betekent? (mijn vermoeden is dat 'kiri' 'steek' of 'patroon' is, want dat komt dus telkens terug).
My favorite pattern until now is on page 135 'viljapekiri'. Any Estonian speakers here who can translate this?


Alle patronen staan in schema's uitgeschreven, dus alhoewel het boek in het Ests is, is het toch wel te begrijpen.
All patterns are fully charted, so even though the book is in Estonian, it should be possible to figure it out.


Er staat ook een schema in over hoe je een boord moet aannaaien, en hoe je moet uitrekenen hoeveel steken je juist nodig heb. Ik begrijp nog niet alle details, maar dit weekend komen de Dutch knitters' naar Leuven. Ze komen een workshop geven over 'Ests kantbreien'.
There is also a schematic about how to sew on it a lace border, and how to calculate how much stitches you need. I am not sure if I understand everything. Fortunately, the Dutch knitters are teaching a workshop on Estonian lace knitting in my LYS this weekend!

Geel, Geler, Geelst - a yellow month

GEEL !

De september-opgave voor de Sockknitters Anonymous was 'geel!' breien. Ik vind geel een moeilijke kleur. 't Is iets zomers, en in de zomer draag ik zelden wollen sokken.Af en toe,op een kille, natte zomeravond durf ik wel eens korte ajoursokjes dragen.
Ik stuurde mijn persoonlijke aankoopassistent (de dochter) erop uit, en ze bracht dit mee. Sokkenwol met sojavezel, in een zacht geel. Volgens de Duitse-garenfabrikant-met-de-Italiaanse-naam is dit 'Zitrone'. Ik vind het eerder 'Banana'.

The SKA september-challenge was to knit Yellow!. I am not a big fan of yellow, so this really was a challenge. I associate yellow with summer, and I don't wear much woollen socks in summer (although we do have occasional chilly days even in summer). My personal shopper, DD,bought me this soft banana yellow from Lana Grossa.

En deze breide ik ermee - Patroon is 'go with the flow', uit het boek 'Interweave favorite socks'. Ik herdoopte ze 'Going Bananas'.

GELER!

Maar ik was nog niet helemaal tevreden. Op zoek naar het perfecte geel zag ik in de natuur heel veel goudgele herfstbladeren in de mooiste verzadigde tinten. Ik heb
zelf een garen geverfd, op zoek naar een perfect herfstgeel. Dit was een beige/zand kleur - oververfd met Dylon 'goudgeel' en 'antiek goud'. De kleur doet me aan herfst en honing en mosterd denken.

I wasn't completely satisfied. In this season I saw lots of yellow - but a very autumnal yellow. I didn't find this yellow in any commercial sockyarn, so I dyed some myself. The base yarn was sand/beige - overdyed with 'antique gold' and 'golden yellow' by Dylon. The color reminds me of autumn, and also honey and mustard.

En dit zijn de sokken. Ajoursokken voor de herfst die ik 'Mustard, honey?' doopte. Patroon is ontworpen door Nancy Bush en er zitten allerlei leuke technieken in zoals een dwars gebreid vlechtje, een apart soort teen...Plezant om te breien, en ze passen als gegoten.

And I knit these socks with this yarn. Also lace socks, but lace I can actually wear in autumn. The pattern is designed by Nancy Bush, and incorparates several challenging techniques, such as a vikkel braid, a band heel, a round toe...This was a fun knit, and they fit like a glove.

GEELST!

Nou ja, niet dus. Ik was een beetje uitgegeeld. De laatste sokken voor de september-uitdaging: voor degenen die echt geen geel wouden breien, kon je ook om het even welk patroon van de 'ontwerpster van de maand' maken. En aangezien de zoon toch nieuwe sokken nodig had...
De oktober-uitdaging is trouwens 'sokken voor mannen'. Er zitten dus nog sokken voor de zoon in de pijplijn...

Not yellow, but also one of the september challenges : knit a Wendy Johnson sock. And as my DS needed new socks...
The october challenge is 'manly socks', so there are more socks planned for him...

RAK-haken - RAK-crochet

Bedankt aan iedereen die bij mijn vorig berichtje troostende woorden en goede raad had. Ik heb het nu kunnen analyseren en ik weet de oorzaken.
Het was de combinatie van :
1.een losgetwijnd garen;
2.op een (te) grote naald gebreid, dus heel los;
3.in een stekenpatroon dat ook heel erg uitrekt;
4.en dan nog alles in 1 stuk gebreid zonder zij- of schoudernaden om te stabiliseren…
en die factoren versterkten elkaar. En nog een beetje frustratie en ongeduld van mij er bovenop...

Thanks to everyone who had good advice and consolation after my previous post. I have learned what caused the disaster :
1. a loosely plied yarn;
2. knitted on a (too) big needle;
3. a stitch pattern that stretches a lot;
4. a garment knit in one piece, without side seams or shoulder seams to stabilize the garment;
and on top of that, a bit of impatience and frustration on my part. I learned a lot from it...


Carolina uit Nederland zond me nog wat katoen voor 'knuffelkapjes'. Roze Phildar, en lichtgeel Pingouin, allebei 100% katoen.

Carolina from Holland sent me some more cotton to try out for chemohats. Pink Phildar, and very pale yellow Pingouin, both 100% cotton.


Oh nee! zut... mijn Addi kantbreinaald heeft de geest gegeven. Ik heb een te dunne naald gebruikt voor dit katoen, resultaat : heel hard trekken en wringen om het werk over de naald te krijgen, en plots : krak! de kabel komt los. Ik heb ergens gelezen dat Addi garantie geeft op zijn naalden. Ik heb deze in Nederland gekocht, winkel gemaild, ze sturen me een nieuwe (als ik de oude opstuur). Het was een 3.25mm en die tussenmaatjes zijn moeilijk te vinden hier.

Rats! My Addi lace needle has given up. I used a too small needle, so I really had to wrestle to get the stitches over the needle, and all of a sudden : crack! and the cable got separated. I read somewhere that Addi needles are guaranteed. I bought this one a fair in Holland. I mailed that shop, and they will replace it. This was a 3.25mm needle, hard to find here.


Dan maar iets haken? Haken gaat supersnel vooruit, en door het wat stijvere resultaat heel geschikt voor hoedjes.

Maybe I can crochet a chemohat, waiting for my new needle? Crochet is faster then knitting, and the stiffer fabric is very suitable for hats...



Hoedje getoond op mijn wekelijkse hobbynamiddag, en ik heb Josée geïnspireerd. Ze is in turbomode gegaan en de week daarop had ze 7 hoedjes mee. Bedankt! Voor wie het ook wil proberen : de patroontjes komen van de website van Garnstudio drops, en je kan die daar ook in het Nederlands vinden.
