Parijs wolweekend - a woolly weekend in Paris

I was in Paris last weekend. I stumbled upon the Eifel tower by accident, but actually I was going to Paris to visit l'Aiguille en Fête.

It's a large fair, with several interesting exhibitons on all kinds of textile arts, for instance on Huichol and Kuna patchwork.

I really liked the works of this artist from Brest, Mona Luison. She composes sculptures with recycled materials.

But of course there were also some interesting stalls  in the knitting field. Lush yarns and feminine garments at Elle tricote from Strasbourg...

... and young and hip at Lilweasel. Lots of chatter in different languages, a very international feel. And judging by the look of it, Stephen West has his following  here also.

So it was no surprise that you could bump into him at the stall of L'Oisive Thé.

My personal discoveries were the yarns of Lily Neige.  Most of their yarns are alpaca or blends. They have merino, angora, cashmere... All raw materials are French, even the cashmere, and dyed with ecological dyes.

Another discovery was the social project of Chausettes Orphélines. They collect old socks, put everything in a shredder, add wool or cotton, and voilà: new yarn! They machineknit new socks, hats, mittens ... with this recycled yarn.

I took this back home. On the left: a hank of alpaca/silk/cashmere and a lace gradient from Lily Neige. In the middle a brown glitter yarn from Chausettes Orphélines. And I returned to the LilWeasel stand when it got a bit calmer, to buy two hanks of handdyed (Vi)laines sockyarn with poetic French names. Very glad with what I bought, now it's time to get knitting!

onderweg - on the road

I like to travel. It breaks the monotony of everyday life. While travelling, you can be amazed by simple things, because for you they are new. The commuter in Paddington station probably just is cold and unhappy because his train is running late...

... I have warm memories of reading books aloud for my children when they were little.

The commuter just sees that it's raining and the world is grey and gloomy. I am in awe of the landscapes and the views from the window of the train. I still have to practise 'taking pictures from the train' though.

When you face 7 hours of traintravel, you should bring a knitting project. And as Elizabeth Zimmerman wrote, the best travel project is a lace shawl on circulars.

Of nog beter? 2 projecten op 1 lange rondbreinaald!
Or even better, 2 projects on 1 long ciruclar needle!

On the right : the Stonington shawl, a square shawl, knit in Wollmeise lace yarn.

You can find this design in several different books. I am doing the version from the book 'best of knitter's : shawls and scarves'. When you click the Amazon link you can browse through the book and look at this shawl's unique construction. It starts with knitting a square on the diagonal.

On the left on my circular needle : an infinity scarf in the making. First you knit a long stretch in garter stitch, then you add some patterning. For inspiration I pulled out an old Burda magazine, chock full of stitch patterns.

Ik kan een zigzag patroontje breien...
I could knit something zigzaggy...

...of iets met blaadjes?
...or something leafy?

I like all the leafy designs, but in the end '191' won...(it was the easiest to fit into the stitch count I already had on my needles...)
