This summer in Iceland: I stumbled upon the yarnstore after a long day of driving, and I was overwhelmed by all the yarn. What to choose?

Handgeverfd of natuurlijke schaapkleuren?
Handdyed or natural sheep colors?
Uiteindelijk kocht ik een beetje van beide...
I went for a bit of both...

Iceland is best known for it's thick sweaters with the round yoke, the so-called Lopapeysa. But you can also find nice lace shawls, as seen here in the open-air museum in Reykjavik.

I  bought a book with Icelandic lace shawl patterns. This book also exists in an English version, but that one was unfortunately not available any longer. I figured that I could make sense of the patterns with a little bit of Googling...I choose to knit a stole in what we call in Dutch 'Peacock Stitch'. It looks like this is called 'Shell stitch' in Icelandic, and I believe this is called 'Feather&Fan' in English?

The yarn is a so-called 'einband', oneply? The shoplady told me that all their yarn is lambswool, so it is supposed to be the softer kind of Icelandic wool. I would not call this 'soft', although I do like course wool (in particular shetland wool). This yarn is rather hairy, with lots of fibres sticking out. It has a bit the hairy feel of mohair, and unfortunately, I do not like to knit with mohair.

Once you know the pattern, knitting a stole is a bit boring. So this was the last 4 months my 'inbetween'-knitting. When I was too tired to concentrate, I enjoyed knitting a few repeats on this long rectangular piece.

I knit until I ran out of yarn, for a total of 180 grams. I ended up with a non-traditional traditional scarf…It’s asymetric, I started with small bands of color, ended with larger bands. I like it, but it was mainly due to running out of gray yarn.

Sizewise: I would have liked it a bit narrower and a bit longer, but still, it’s wearable as a stole/wrap. I hope the recipient will like it like this.

And now that I look at the pictures, I think I need a gray shawl too!
