de patentsteek - brioche stitch

Vorig jaar was ik een dagje in Amsterdam toen Nancy Marchant haar boek over 'brioche stitch' voorstelde, bij ons meer gekend als 'de patentsteek'. (Ik doe er hier weer een Amazon-link bij)
Last year I was in Amsterdam when Nancy Marchant launched her book on 'brioche knitting'.


Ik heb toen een proeflapje gebreid in de simpelste versie van de steek, maar veel verder ben ik niet geraakt. Ik wil graag een klein projectje beginnen, zeker nu ik ook een Duits boekje gevonden heb over sokken in patentsteek.

En om het helemaal goed in de vingers te krijgen kan je op 5 februari een workshop volgen in 't wolwinkeltje in Leuven, deskundig begeleid door de Dutch knitters. Ik ben al ingeschreven!

1 bolletje - one skein

Mijn eerste boek waar ik iets uit brei in 2011 is 'sock yarn : one-skein wonders' (link naar Amazon, waar je door het boek kunt 'bladeren').

Veel breisters verzamelen wol, en een bol sokkenwol als souvenir is vlug meegenomen in een buitenlandse wolwinkel. Maar sommige breisters breien helemaal geen sokken. Dan is een verzameling patroontjes voor andere projecten wel handig...er is heel veel dat je kan maken met 1 bol sokkenwol (ervan uitgaand dat sokkenwol tegenwoordig vaak in 100g-bollen of strengen verkocht wordt).
Je kan bvb. een boodschappennetje haken.
Knitters are often yarncollectors too. When travelling, a ball of sockyarn is easily bought, not too expensive, and there is a world of possibilities of 'one skein'-projects. (if you take into account that sock yarn often is in 100g balls or hanks).
You could, for instance, crochet a shopping bag.

Deze 'lettuce slide scarf' vind ik ook leuk, en ik denk dat mijn streng Wollmeise in kleur 'wasabi' er perfect voor is.

Het boek is onderverdeeld in 'from head to toe', 'it's a wrap', 'knits for kids' en 'Bag it and more'. In die laatste categorie vind ik een paar projecten wat vergezocht. Ik ben niet direct van plan een hoes voor mijn koffiepot te breien.
The book has the chapters 'from head to toe', 'it's a wrap', 'knits for kids' and 'bag it and more'. In that section there are some weird projects. I don't intend to knit a cover for my coffeepot any time soon.


En wat heb ik uiteindelijk gebreid? Sokken natuurlijk! want die vind je ook in het boek. Dit zijn de 'Bohusian socks', gebreid in Scheepjes Invicta colour.
And what did I knit from the book? Socks of course! because you can find those in the book too. These are the 'Bohusian socks', knit in Scheepjes Invicta colour.

En mijn volgend project is ook gestart. Ik had nog een paar handschoenen nodig, die passen bij mijn favoriete wintersjaal.
And I have already started the next project from the book. I could use a pair of gloves, matching with my favorite winter scarf.

Ik hoop met de restjes nog net toe te komen...

boekenplankbreien - knitting from my shelf

Op Ravelry is er een groep 'knitting from your shelf'. Bedoeling erachter is dat veel breisters een hele boekenplank hebben, met patronen die nooit gebruikt worden.

Dit is dus mijn boekenplank : 2 leggers, toch goed voor zo'n 150 boeken? (ruwe schatting).

Beneden in mijn berging heb ik nog archiefdozen vol met tijdschriften. In de kerstvakantie ben ik er eens ingedoken, alle niet-geklasseerde in een wasmand geladen en beginnen sorteren...
I also have boxes full of magazines. During the Christmas holiday, I started sorting out the stacks that were not filed away yet.

Ik kom de meest obscure boekjes tegen. Op Ravelry kan je dit invoeren in je eigen virtuele bibliotheek, en later kan je dan ook alle patronen van die tijdschriften en boeken op zoekwoorden doorzoeken. Als ik bvb. een babymutsje wil breien, dan zegt Ravelry me in welke tijdschriften ik kan zoeken. Ik kan ook nog het soort garen opgeven (bvb. 'sokkenwol'), of zoeken welk patroon ik al in mijn 'wachtrij' staan had...
Volgens Ravelry heb ik nu 66 boeken, 129 tijdschriften, en 22 'booklets'(meestal patronenboeken van een bepaald garenmerk). Maar niet alles is terug te vinden in Ravelry, dus waarschijnlijk is het meer...in totaal zo'n 4000 patronen. Dat is nog relatief weinig, als je weet dat Ravelry 196.000 patronen heeft geïndexeerd. Maar 't is wel veel als je een keuze moet maken over je volgende project.

Ik heb nu een keurig stapeltje tijdschriften, maar niet genoeg dozen om ze in te steken.

En ondertussen heb ik al een project gevonden in mijn nieuwste boeken dat dringend moest worden opgezet...

En deze streng sokkenwol is mee naar België gekomen...maar ik ga zeker nog eens terug naar Keulen! Alles hat super geklapt.

de kerstsok - my christmas socks

Misschien wat laat om over te bloggen, maar de fotootjes wou ik toch tonen : mijn kerstsokken.
Probably a bit late, but I wanted to show the pictures of Christmas socks anyway.

Gebreid in LanaGrossa Meilenweit in een feestelijke rode kerstkleur. Jammer genoeg zijn ze wat groot uitgevallen, misschien omdat ik garen van de 'men' collectie heb gebruikt?
Knit in Lana Grossa Meilenweit men in a very Christmassy red. Unfortunately they came out a bit big.

Het patroon op de bovenvoet (de V-vormige rib) krijg je door te minderen. En dan moet je op de voetzool weer meerderen natuurlijk. Weer iets nieuws geleerd! (en onder aan de voet zitten ze super)
You get the V-rib on the upperfoot by decreasing. To get the right stitch count, you have to increase on the sole. Another new way to knit socks... I am learning new tricks with every project (although I maybe could be labeled an 'old dog')...

Mijn kerstvakantie is trouwens nog niet gedaan. Deze week ga ik 3 dagen naar Keulen. (mein Deutsch ûben und vielleicht Deutsche strickbücher kaufen?)
I still have some holidays ahead of me, and I will spend these the next 3 days in Cologne, Germany.

het jaar van de trui - year of the sweater

Ik had 2010 uitgeroepen tot 'het jaar van de trui'. Ik begon goed door een trui af te maken waar ik al 2 jaar aan werkte.
I pronounced 2010 'the year of the sweater'. I started the year by finishing a sweater I had worked on for 2 years.

In mei breide ik goed door aan een trui , mijn best gelukte trui van 2010. En ik begon een andere. Bedoeling was een zomertruitje te breien, maar ik brei niet graag in katoen, en truien zijn zo moeilijk. Halverwege begin ik altijd te twijfelen...Dus die is nooit afgeraakt, het rugpand ligt ergens onderaan in mijn breimand. En er waren andere projecten, leuke kleine bevredigende projecten... (sokken, natuurlijk).
I finished a sweater in May. And I started another one. That one was meant to be a summer sweater, a cotton one. Sweaters are difficult, halfway I start doubting myself, and the project, reminding me I don't like to knit with cotton. And there were other projects, more fun, more rewarding (socks, of course).

En toen werd het stil op het truienfront...
And then, no more sweaters...


Maar om 2010 goed te eindigen, heb ik het toch nog eens geprobeerd.
But to finish 2010, I tried again to knit a sweater.

GRRR. Ik heb nochthans een proeflapje gebreid, en het proeflapje gewassen. En nog is de trui te groot... Omdat het een assymmetrisch model is, hangt de trui een beetje raar...
I did swatch, and I did wash my swatch, but the sweater came out too big. Because it is an assymmetrical sweater, it hangs very funny when it is too big.


Dan maar de drukknoopjes verzetten, zodat de trui meer overlapt, en beter aansluit.
I moved the invisible button closure to overlap more, and now it is much better.


Ik moet nog een oplossing vinden voor de geribde boord aan de mouwen, die altijd oprolt (waarschijnlijk omdat de grijze Zweedse wol veel dunner is dan de cremekleurige wol)
I still need to find a solution for the ribbed band at the sleeves that roll up (probably due to a different gauge between the Noro and the Swedish yarn).


En ik twijfel nog over de kleur van de trui. Dat crème gaat me niet echt. Ik denk erover om de trui te oververven, maar ben bang om het dan te ruineren... Voorlopig los ik het op door een felgekleurd T-shirt eronder te dragen.
And final remark : I think that the sweater does not work for me because of the color. I am pondering if I would overdye it, but am afraid of ruining it completely.

Eindbalans : 3 truien in 2010. En meer ambities heb ik eigenlijk niet.
So the final count for 2010 is 3 sweaters. I can live with that.

kerstgeschenken - christmas presents

Met Kerst geven we elkaar kleine kadootjes...Ik hanteer 3 categoriëen voor kadootjes : 'nuttig', 'plezant', en 'handgemaakt'. Ik probeer altijd in de categorie 'handgemaakt' iets te vinden dat past bij de persoon in kwestie. Voor mijn twitterende dochter maakte ik deze vogeltjes...
We always give small presents with Christmas. I try to do something handmade for everybody in our family. I knit these Twitter birds for my geeky daughter. I think she liked them.

De ijzeren man kreeg in de categorie 'handgemaakt' een Noro gestreepte sjaal. Noro staat bekend om zijn felle kleuren, maar er zijn ook kleurstellingen die wat 'mannelijker' zijn. Ik combineerde hier '149' bruin-grijs-crème met '150' grijsgroen-olijf-felturquoise. Die laatste kleur heb ik ertussenuit geknipt, dat was misschien toch wat té. Eigenlijk zie je de sjaal haast niet, maar ik heb geen betere foto voor het ogenblik. Mijn mannen poseren niet graag voor een foto. In de categorie 'nuttig' kreeg de ijzeren man een muts. Hij draagt niet veel mutsen, met dit weer kan het net. En die muts was 'nuttig', maar ook 'handgemaakt' natuurlijk. De zoon poseert al helemaal niet, dus zijn handgebreide handschoenen moeten jullie er maar bij denken.
My Iron Man received a handknit scarf and hat in Noro yarn. Noro is known for it's bright colors, but there are some colorways that are more subdued. I combined '149' brown-grey-cream with '150' green-olive-bright turquoise. I cut out the bright turquoise though, that was probably a bit too over the top for him. Sorry for the bad picture, the men around here don't like posing for pictures. That's why I don't have any pictures of the gloves I knit for DS...


En zelf kreeg ik ook kadootjes : het nieuwste sokkenboek van CookieA, een boek met allerlei patroontjes voor sokkenwol (zelfs als je geen sokken wil breien), een streng Madelinetosh garen, en dubbelgebreide pannenlappen. Iets handgemaakts krijgen is altijd speciaal, bedankt hiervoor yarnlot!
And I received presents too : the newest CookieA sockbook, a sockyarn oneskein book, a beautifull hank of MadelineTosh yarn and doubleknit potholders. I really treasure those, thanks to yarnlot!

En om het helemaal af te maken : ik ga nog een CookieA workshop volgen, einde januari in Engeland. Hopelijk is het weer iets beter, zodat het een reis zonder hindernissen wordt...
And to top it off : I am going to attend a CookieA workshop, the last weekend of January, in England. I am hoping for a bit better weather, and a safe journey.

winterwandeling - walking in the snow

Lang geleden dat we nog zo'n winter gehad hebben... sommige mensen mopperen. Ik vind het mooi! ... en ik kan al mijn handgebreid spul dragen...
We haven't had a winter like this in ages. Some people are getting tired of it. I love it! ... and it's a good opportunity to show off all the handknits...


Ik heb een nieuw fototoestel. Dus in de toekomst krijgen jullie hier weer een betere kwaliteit foto's te zien. Dat is de bedoeling toch, maar ik moet eerst nog een paar dingetjes uitzoeken... en ik ben heel slecht in het lezen van handleidingen, bij mij is het meer 'proberen en mislukken',of de dochter inschakelen(die studeert multi-media). Ik brei nog wel wat nieuwe sokken in ruil.
I have a new camera. The goal is to get better quality pictures on the blog again. But there is a bit of a learning curve. I was never good at reading the manual. I am more the 'trial and error'-learning type. Or else I'll have the DD to explain it to me. I can knit some more socks in exchange.


Ondertussen geniet ik nog wat van de winter... en wens ik iedereen vrolijke feesten!

november skies

Het thema in de 'effen sokken'-groep was 'air' in November. Dus : laat je inspireren door de luchten die je ziet om sokken in een effen kleur te breien....
Nu, vanaf mijn werkplek op het 10de verdiep zie ik heel verschillende luchten...
The theme in the 'solid socks'group was 'air' in November. Get inspired by a nice picture of the sky to knit a (semi-)solid sock... From my workspace on the 10th floor, I had lots of opportunities to watch the everchanging skies in November...

...maar de sokken vallen te wijd uit, ik zal iets anders moeten proberen. En misschien is het toch niet effen genoeg?

De dochter houdt van blauw, en de dochter houdt van TV-series. Dit is de 'Eric'-sok, geïnspireerd door de TV-serie 'True Blood'. Als je goed kijkt zie je 'Eric' in rune-tekens op het been ingebreid, verwijzend naar één van de hoofdpersonages, de 1000 jaar oude viking-vampier.
DD likes blue, and TV-shows. These are the 'Eric'socks, named after the 1000-year old viking-vampire in 'True Blood'. If you look closely, you see 'Eric' knitted in Rune signs on the leg.

... en de zoon heeft ook sokken nodig. In de Nederlandse sokkenbreigroep heeft Dirkje een sok ontworpen, 'Winterbanden'. Dirkje woont in Finland, 't is wel duidelijk waar ze haar inspiratie voor dit ontwerp gehaald heeft. Voor wie op zoek is naar leuke Nederlandstalige patronen - deze groep is echt een aanrader. Je moetje wel eerst aanmelden bij yahoo.
...DS also needs socks. In the Dutch yahoogroup 'sokkenbreien' we have knit this sock 'Winter tyres'. This sock is designed by Dirkje, who lives in Finland. Pretty clear what inspired her...The pattern is only in Dutch, but there are extensive charts. If you are an experienced sockknitter you can follow those with no problem.

Ondertussen worden de luchten steeds grijzer...dikke mist komt opzetten, en alhoewel ik op het 10de zit, voel ik me een beetje opgesloten.

Begin december valt de eerste sneeuw. Eigenlijk zou ik in december witte sokken moeten breien, maar het thema voor de 'effen sokken' is 'rood'. Even in mijn kast kijken of ik nog een mooi rood heb voor een kerstsok! (die zijn dan voor mij, met rode sokken doe ik mijn kroost geen plezier)
In december the snow starts falling. I really should knit white socks now..but the theme for the solid socks is 'red' in december. I'll just have to dive in my stash, looking for a perfect Christmassy red (and these socks will be for me again, I don't think DD or DS will be happy with red socks...)

te snel winter

Eind November dacht ik dat ik er klaar voor was, voor de winter. Ik had een tweede 'Daybreak'-sjaal gebreid voor mezelf, in herfstkleuren.
At the end of November I felt I was ready for the winter-to-come. I had knit a 2d 'Daybreak' shawl, this time for me in autumnal colors.

Ook nog vlug een muts erbij gemaakt, in fuchsia handgesponnen wol...nog een nieuwe paarse jas,laat de winter maar komen!
And I knit a nice fitting hat in fuchsia handspun...


Maar ondertussen is het hier zo berekoud, ik heb mijn oude, minder elegante, maar dubbeldik warme muts maar weer uit de kast gehaald...
But it is sooo cold here, I had to put on my old, less elegant, but very thick and warm hat again...
