zotte sokken - sock madness

Sock Madness has begun and this was the first pattern. I will compete as long as I can, but I have to face it: I am not superfast. Still, I liked knitting these and I have learned a few new things.

These socks start from the toe. The pattern uses 2 yarns, slipstitch spiral knitting. I used  solid black and variegated greenish gray. Calm colours, some used very wild colours for these!

After 3 hours of knitting I had the heel done. It was not so difficult as feared, but it’s a bit fiddly. Thankfully there was link to Ysolda's blog with a video on how to do the Japanese shortrows. And of course, there is the sock madness group on Ravelry where you can ask questions.

Finished the first sock. And, after knitting the leg, it’s obvious that this sock is too big for me. It fits my husband with size 43, but alas, he never wears handknit socks… I am sure I will find a recipient though, the socks are really nice…
Laatste leerpunt: mooi afzetten.
Finished! I am not too happy with the stretchy bind-off I used, but it’s OK for now. On one sock I used verypinkknitsverystretchy bind-off. On sock 2 I used the interlocking sewn bind-off (Knitty article), but I think I did something wrong, because the final result does not look like the one in the article at all…

And inbetween I did some crochet. This will be a gift for the home exchange family from Barcelona at the end of this month (filled with some Belgian chocolate Easter eggs...)

Supersimpel2

The theme is still supersimple socks for DS, entertaining socks for me. He declared that these were his best fitting socks, so I was looking for something similar, but not the same.

I have knit these ones for myself in 2013. They incoporate archshaped soles, with increases on the sole and decreases on the upperfoot.

The same principle is used in this sock design. You can download it for free from Ravelry. It's a bit difficult to see the construction in the dark yarn, but you can notice what happens in this picture. The left sock is blocked on a sock blocker, the right one is unblocked. The archshaped sole follows the natural curve of the foot.

That was all for the simple socks I think. I succombed to the lure of the Sock Madness, although I am not really competitive. This warm-up sock has a double gusset, and a heel construction that is new to me. I don't think DS will like these, so it's just for fun! You can still enlist, the game starts 1st of March.

Supersimpel

The sockknittingplan for 2016: supersimple socks for DearSon (DS).

I started the year good with these. It's a free pattern, and uses increases and decreases to form 'faux' cables.

And then I got tired of 'simple'. I received this pattern by Stephanie Vanderlinden as a prize for knitting the complete Op-Art sock book. The pattern is called Blau und Braun, but I did them in Blau und Blau. I did the mosaic knitting on the leg, and simple stockinette on the foot.

OK. Terug naar de doelstelling. Simpel.
OK. Back to my resolution, knit simple socks.

But still, I want to learn new-to-me-things, so I used an extra stretchy beginning for the top of the sock, the German twisted cast-on.

This was an ideal project to take with me at the kick-off of our Leuven Stitch'nBitch meeting. From now on every Friday (except the first Friday) at Wereldcafé Leuven. Come over for a chat and inspiration!

Parijs wolweekend - a woolly weekend in Paris

I was in Paris last weekend. I stumbled upon the Eifel tower by accident, but actually I was going to Paris to visit l'Aiguille en Fête.

It's a large fair, with several interesting exhibitons on all kinds of textile arts, for instance on Huichol and Kuna patchwork.

I really liked the works of this artist from Brest, Mona Luison. She composes sculptures with recycled materials.

But of course there were also some interesting stalls  in the knitting field. Lush yarns and feminine garments at Elle tricote from Strasbourg...

... and young and hip at Lilweasel. Lots of chatter in different languages, a very international feel. And judging by the look of it, Stephen West has his following  here also.

So it was no surprise that you could bump into him at the stall of L'Oisive Thé.

My personal discoveries were the yarns of Lily Neige.  Most of their yarns are alpaca or blends. They have merino, angora, cashmere... All raw materials are French, even the cashmere, and dyed with ecological dyes.

Another discovery was the social project of Chausettes Orphélines. They collect old socks, put everything in a shredder, add wool or cotton, and voilà: new yarn! They machineknit new socks, hats, mittens ... with this recycled yarn.

I took this back home. On the left: a hank of alpaca/silk/cashmere and a lace gradient from Lily Neige. In the middle a brown glitter yarn from Chausettes Orphélines. And I returned to the LilWeasel stand when it got a bit calmer, to buy two hanks of handdyed (Vi)laines sockyarn with poetic French names. Very glad with what I bought, now it's time to get knitting!

Gelukkige verjaardag! - Happy Birthday!

Gelukkige 84ste verjaardag mama!
Happy 84th Birthday Mom! I don't think you read my blog, but still... Your birthday present is finished, and in a few days I will bring it over.

It's a lace scarf, Peacock tail and leaf, from the book Knitted lace of Estonia. An ideal project to practise Estonian bobbles (nupps). At the end there was a tricky part, where I had to graft a lace border to the scarf.

I have knit this with Zealana luxuria Air, yarn  that I bought in New-Zealand, 40% possum, 40% cashmere and 20% silk. It's very warm, yet light, and will keep your neck warm withouth being too heavy.

I am wishing you many (not too) cold winters to come, with each year a new lace scarf, I promise!

Niet volgens plan - this was not a New Year's resolution

I did not intend to knit a pair of slippers in 2016, and yet, I just did. I had knit this pattern before in 2009 for my son and he requested another pair of slippers. He really likes these!

I am taking a course by the Dutch Knitters, called 'better knitting', and Carla challenges us to really think about what method is the best to use, for every project we make. In the pattern they use a 'normal' cast-on, and close the hole of the toe by drawing a thread through. The cast-off used is a 3needle cast-off, and although that's sturdy, it also leaves you with a ridge at the back of the foot. I am a better knitter now (I think), and have knit this completely seamless by using a Turkish cast-on and grafting the back seam. Grafting in 1x1-rib was not so obvious, so we discussed about it in our Facebook group. That was one of the assignements of the workshop: participate in a facebook community and help each other out with the home assignements. So, there you have it - my facebook account, not very active (yet?), but who wants it can find me there too now.

Delft

A home exchange in Delft with private library in the front garden... perfect for a short and cozy stay in a quintessential Dutch city.

We enjoyed the sunny weather to stroll around. Delft is smaller then Amsterdam, but has everything to offer for a nice holiday.

After my visit to the old and (not so) new church and the Vermeercentre, I headed to the yarn store.
I was greeted by Puk, who I know online as a designer of simple projects for beginning knitters.

They had about the same yarns as my local yarn shop, so I bought 2 balls to knit a brioche hat, aptly named Delfts Blauw.  I also bought a book by club geluk. Check out their website if you are interested in weird projects!

I'll be back in Delft for sure!

The last socks of 2015 are for my daughter. Yarn is Nerd Girl Yarns, color Tardis Blue, pattern Jedi Mind Tricks. All very apropriate for the recipient... That was 2015. And I plan no complicated socks in 2016!

- me verdiepen in de brioche steek,

I did have very well laid-out knitting plans for 2016:
- super simple socks (SuSi) for my son with european shoe size 46,
- sweaters for me,
- getting to know brioche stitch,
- cute hats as baby gifts.
On January 1st I noticed a big spot on my mother's silvergrey merino lace scarf. My mother is 83, and she does not like things to change in her environment. I offered to take the scarf with me to give it a good wash and block, but she almost paniced about the thought to have to miss it for a few weeks (I don't exactly live around the corner). So I let it keep her, and started a new lace scarf with a yarn I bought in New-Zealand - it's cashmere, oppossum and silk. My knitting resolutions were already altered January the 2d. You know what they say about well laid-out plans....I won't mention what happened with my other New Year's resolutions. Maybe a bit late, but I wish you all what I wish for myself  in the next year: a year filled with nice yarns, interesting projects, and warmth and love of family and friends. Happy 2016!

Op-Art socks - Heinz

This is the last pattern from the Op-Art book, named after Heinz Mack.
Op-art artists, such as Heinz Mack (born 1931), evoke the impression of lines and curves by the juxtaposition of alternating black and white lines. This concept is also used in shadow knitting in which garter ridges in one color alternate with single rows of stockinette stitch in a contrasting color. In the book these socks are knit in shocking pink and vivid green.

This is my version of these socks, in sand and white. I ran out of yarn (using leftoves), so finished of with a soft yellow. For this sock design, the color of the garter ridges alternates between adjacent blocks (or crescents) of pattern to produce visual movement.

The op-art shapes are worked one on top of another in brick fashion in rows, then joined to form tubes. The leg is grafted together, and then the foot and toes are knit in 'normal' sock-knitting mode.
I did not enjoy these at all. It's very hard to get a neat seam diagonally. And now I have knit all 19 patterns from the book. I learned a lot, and I have some nice and wearable socks. Not all were a succes, but it was nice to have a focus on creative sock-knitting. And I learned a bit about Op-Art too!

Looking back, these are my top three from the book:

Fibonacci, welloved by my daughter, and the first colorwork socks I have knit that really fit well.

Crest - socks with travelling stitches and cables. I really struggled with these, so finishing them against the deadline gave me a big sense of accomplishment.

Ludwig  - my son's favorites. I made them a bit shorter then in the book, as my son likes short socks. And of course I did not manage to do it properly, and had to restart, but all ended well in the end.

I am sure I will continue knitting socks in 2016, but my resolution is only to knit supersimple ones...
