Last of the Sock Madness

De sock madness is achter de rug. Uiteindelijk ben ik gestruikeld over het voorlaatste patroon, Coffee Cantata. Een heel mooi ontwerp, met veel kabeltjes en verdraaide steken. Nogal belastend voor pols, en bij mij, de schouder. Een oud probleem dat weer de kop opstak. Ik heb de handdoek in de ring gegooid, en mijzelf een verplichte breistop opgelegd. Wie het wil proberen, het patroon is gratis op Ravelry te vinden.

Maar ik heb nog niet over alle sokken geblogd. Inhaalpost dus!
But there is still one pattern I need to blog about, so let's go.
 

Het patroon heet 'Roos en Doorn'. Het bestaat uit een ajoursok met een kralenrandje. Ik haalde een mooi grijsgroen garen uit de kast, Rowan FineArt (met mohair en zijde...). En rode kraaltjes, een bloeddruppel als je je prikt aan de doornen.
Bij het begin van de sok heb ik echt gepruld en gezweet, ik had nog nooit een dubbele opzet met kralen gedaan.
Gelukkig was er een filmpje om opnieuw en opnieuw af te spelen. En de Nederlandse sokkenbreigroep om tips uit te wisselen. Ik zie nu dat op het einde van de sock madness meer dan tienduizend berichten zijn uitgewisseld. Ook veel elkaar aanmoedigen!
This sock is named Rose and Thorn. I used Rowan fineart sock yarn (mohair and silk…). And I thought it would be nice to have red beads, like drops of blood…
The start took me several tries. I never did this double beaded cast-on, or a folded hem with beads. Fortunately,  there a several video's to show you how. But even then, I struggled a bit.

Mijn kraaltjes zijn wel erg klein, en sommige floepen naar de verkeerde kant. Frustrerend! Ik heb ook wat geëxperimenteerd met de naalddikte. Voor het been iets 'groter' (2mm), voor de voet mijn nieuwe favoriete naalden voor sokkenbreien, de hiyahiya 1.75mm.
I think my beads are too small, and that’s why they keep popping to the back and I can’t get them to behave. I used a  1.75mm needle for the cuff, switched to 2mm for the leg, and did heel and foot on the 1.75mm again for a nice firm fabric. I really like how the Rowan Fine Art is knitting up.

De foto is gemaakt ergens in april, toen was het beter weer dan nu in juni. Ik heb nu twee paar sokken met kraaltjes in mijn kast, en meer hoeft niet. Dat is dan weer het uitdagende aan de sock madness, je probeert dingen (zoals met kraaltjes breien) waar je uit jezelf niet aan zou beginnen. Ik ben blij met het eindresultaat!
This picture was taken somewhere in April, when the weather was sunnier and warmer then now in June. I  have two pair of socks with beads in my drawer now, and that is enough, thank you. Taking part in the sock madness has forced me out of my comfort zone, I don't think I would have knit socks with beads out of my free will. I am very happy with the outcome though!

Eisregen - sock madness

'Eisregen', heet het volgende patroon in de sock madness. Ijs, kou, sneeuw en ijzel... dan denk ik aan grijs, blauw, wit...Ik had geen geschikte kleur in mijn kast, dus dan maar naar het wolwinkeltje...

The next sock in the sock madness is called 'Eisregen'. I did not have a suitable icy yarn in stash, so I went to my local yarn store...

Ik kocht bleekblauw arucania, en grijsblauwvioletgrijs lanagrossa met kasjmier. Ben met deze laatste begonnen. De bleekblauwe is dan voor een volgend project. En de sokkenwol met kasjmier breit heel mooi, ook in een ajourpatroontje...
Freezing was what I had in mind. And those colors actually match most of my wardrobe.
I bought pale blue Araucania, and Lana Grossa Meilenweit cashmere.  
I started with the Lana Grossa, and I really like how the cashmere yarn is knitting up…

Na 10 rijen boord op 2mm  ben ik overgeschakeld op 1.75mm, omdat ik bang ben dat de sok te wijd wordt.
Hmm. Ik twijfel nog. Op 1.75mm past het bovenbeen om de kuit nog net ( op het randje van te wijd). Maar ik ben bang naar de enkels toe dat ze echt te groot worden. Ik ben dan overgeschakeld op 1.5mm naalden. Dat heb ik nog nooit gedaan, ik wist zelfs niet dat ik die karbonz 1.5mm had…maar ze bevallen me wel, superdunne naaldjes, lichtgewicht, liggen prettig in de hand. En het lost het probleem op van dit belachelijk groot patroon.  Het 'druppeltje' wordt gevormd door extra steken te maken, dit 3 rijen te breien en dan weer te minderen. Op sommige rijen heb je dus meer dan 100 steken, terwijl ik voor een normale sok ongeveer 60 steken nodig heb! Voor de wedstrijd mag je niets aan het patroon veranderen, anders had ik al vlug dit op minder steken opgezet.
After knitting the first raindrops pattern repeat, it looks like the sock is too wide. It fits over my calves, but going down to the ankle it will definetly be huge. Switching to 1.5mm needles after the first pattern repeat (that’s triple zero). I will knit the entire foot chart, and then decide what to do. I cannot see myself knitting this sock on 1mm needles ….

 

Af. De eerste keer ooit dat ik het zogezegde  ' secondsock syndroom' heb ondervonden (dat is absolute tegenzin om de tweede sok te breien).  Ik moest ze echt op 1.5mm breien om ze passend te krijgen. Maar uiteindelijk zitten ze wel goed. Het garen is zilvergrijs met lila ondertoon. En 5% kasjmier, lekker zacht. En heel klein beetje kasjmier, maar het helpt toch om deze sok met een hele strakke stekenproef niet als karton te doen aanvoelen. En ik ben weer door naar de volgende ronde van de wedstrijd! Dan zullen 10 breisters per team strijden om beste (of toch snelste) van het team te worden. Ik heb niet echt ambitie, maar ik blijf meedoen!
Finished. The first time ever that I suffered from 2d sock syndrome. I had to knit these on triple zero dpn’s to get a sock that fits me. But in the end, I do like the socks. The socks are  a very nice pale lilacgray. And the little bit of cashmere helps to keep these socks soft, even with this tight gauge. And so I advance to the next round in the sock madness. The last 10 of our team battle it out, to nominee the best of each team. I am not really ambitious, but I will try.

sweet nuttins - sock madness

De volgende sok voor de zotte sokkenwedstrijd vroeg om kraaltjes. En een ajourmotiefje. Ik vind ajour mooi in een effen bleke kleur, en ik wou al lang het extra dunne garen uitproberen.  Wel nog twijfel: roze of regenboogkraaltjes? De facebookvrienden vonden 'regenboog', maar ik ging voor roze.
The next pattern in the sock madness called for beads. I started with a merino sockyarn, but that yarn was too dark and the cuff came out too wide. So I decided to get some 3ply sockyarn and try that one out. My LYS only had navy, gray and sand. I cheered it up with some pink beads…

Je moet er wel je aandacht bijhouden. Voor je het weet heb je een kabeltje dat de verkeerde kant opgaat. Met wat handigheid kan je dat oplossen. Het was even zweten, maar 't is gelukt!

The sock has some rather complex charts to follow, so if your not paying attention, you end up with a cable that crosses the wrong way. I managed to fix it by laddering down 3 stitches and with the use of a crochet hook.

 

Nadat ik ze een avond gedragen had vond ik dat één van de sokken wel erg strak zat.  Ik had op sok 1 vijf patroonherhalingen, en op sok2 maar 4 maal het patroon gebreid. Geen wonder dus dat  die niet paste... De schaar bovengehaald, een stukje eraf geknipt, uithalen en opnieuw breien.

update: after wearing my socks for one evening, I noticed one of the two was much tighter then the other. And yes, I managed to knit 5 repeats on one sock, and 4 repeats on the other… So a little bit of sock surgery was needed.

Nu zitten ze perfect. Gelukkig maar. Het gaat weer koud worden. En, ik heb de volgende ronde van de sokkenwedstrijd gehaald. Gestart met 50, nu blijven er nog 20 over. De volgende ronde mogen er nog 10 door naar de laatste ronde. Benieuwd of ik het haal.
They fit perfect now. And it will be chilly again the next days! I made it to the round of 20 in the sock madness competition, only 10 knitters will advance to the next round. I wonder if I will manage to get to the last round.

Waimakariri - sock madness

Het volgende patroon in de zotte sokkenwedstrijd is genoemd naar  een 'gevlochten' rivier in Nieuw-Zeeland.
The next pattern in the sock madness competetion is named after a 'braided' river in New-Zealand.

 

De sok begint met een voorlopig gehaakte opzet over acht steken. Eerst brei je een klein reepje met kabels.
The sock starts with a provisional cast-on over eight stitches. You start by knitting a small piece, with cables.

 

Dan haal je de voorlopige opzet uit, en neemt daarrond steken op. En dan begin je te meerderen voor de teen. Resultaat is dat je een kabel hebt die helemaal rond over de teen loopt. Een beetje prullen, maar een interessante constructie met een mooi resultaat.

You then remove the provisional cast-on, and pick up stitches around the small strip of knitting. You continue by increasing stitches. This results in a toe, with a cable wrapped around it. A bit fiddly to do, but very ingenious construction and a nice start for a sock.

Aan de spie splitst de kabel, die twee kabels meanderen dan verder over het been, kruisen en gaan dan weer de andere kant op... net zoals de rivier het doet.

The cable splits at the gusset, travels over the socks, and forms a braided cable, just like the river does...

Ik ben heel blij met deze sokken. Het was een patroon waar je geconcentreerd moest blijven, en het is me gelukt om een paar op vijf dagen te breien. Elke 'ronde' in de wedstrijd vallen er breisters af per team. En ik ben nog steeds in de wedstrijd, ik kan naar de volgende ronde. Tijdens het breien zag ik af en toe beelden voor mij van onze reis naar Nieuw-Zeeland deze tijd vorig jaar, veel goede herinneringen! En het doet me al dromen van de huisruil die we in augustus gepland hebben in Australië...

I am very pleased with my finished pair and my knitting speed. This sock madness competition makes me knit like the wind, a finished pair a five days is really an accomplishment for me. It was a rather intense sock to knit, but I really like this design. It reminds me of our trip to New-Zealand in 2015... good memories! And it makes me look forward to our upcoming home exchange in Australia this August...

zotte sokken - sock madness

 

De zotte sokken wedstrijd is begonnen. Of eigenlijk de zotte wedstrijd om het snelst een paar sokken breien. Ik doe mee, zolang het kan. Maar supersnel ben ik niet. Dit eerste paar was leuk, vooral omdat ik weer heel wat nieuwe dingen geleerd heb.
Sock Madness has begun and this was the first pattern. I will compete as long as I can, but I have to face it: I am not superfast. Still, I liked knitting these and I have learned a few new things.

De sokken starten van de teen. Het patroon is gebreid met twee garens, dunne streepjes in spiraal en afgehaalde steken. Ik gebruikte effen zwart, en grijsgroen gevlamd garen. Kalme kleuren, er kwamen ook wildere exemplaren voorbij.

These socks start from the toe. The pattern uses 2 yarns, slipstitch spiral knitting. I used  solid black and variegated greenish gray. Calm colours, some used very wild colours for these!

 

De hiel was nieuw voor mij. Deze wordt gebreid met Japanse verkorte rijen. Het was een beetje zoeken, maar in het patroon wordt er naar videootjes gelinkt die je voorthelpen. En natuurlijk is er op Ravelry een groep waar je vragen kan stellen, zelfs soms een beetje te veel gekwetter en informatie overload... maar dat maakt het ook juist leuk natuurlijk.

After 3 hours of knitting I had the heel done. It was not so difficult as feared, but it’s a bit fiddly. Thankfully there was link to Ysolda's blog with a video on how to do the Japanese shortrows. And of course, there is the sock madness group on Ravelry where you can ask questions.

 

Na de eerste sok is het duidelijk, deze worden te groot voor mij. Maar voor een man met maat 46 (de zoon) zijn ze misschien wat te krap. De ijzerenman met maat 43 draagt nooit handgebreide sokken. Dus zijn ze voor de cadeautjesmand, ik zal er wel een kandidaat voor vinden.

Finished the first sock. And, after knitting the leg, it’s obvious that this sock is too big for me. It fits my husband with size 43, but alas, he never wears handknit socks… I am sure I will find a recipient though, the socks are really nice…

Laatste leerpunt: mooi afzetten. Ik heb twee verschillende methodes gebruikt, maar ben over geen van de twee tevreden. Misschien haal ik dat nog wel eens uit en begin ik opnieuw...
Finished! I am not too happy with the stretchy bind-off I used, but it’s OK for now. On one sock I used verypinkknitsverystretchy bind-off. On sock 2 I used the interlocking sewn bind-off (Knitty article), but I think I did something wrong, because the final result does not look like the one in the article at all…

En het moet niet altijd breien zijn. In de hobbyclub hebben we dit schaaltje gehaakt. Kliederen met powertex en tada... gevuld met paaseitjes wordt dat een mooi cadeautje voor onze huisruilgasten uit Barcelona einde deze maand!
And inbetween I did some crochet. This will be a gift for the home exchange family from Barcelona at the end of this month (filled with some Belgian chocolate Easter eggs...)
