Op-Art socks - Heinz

Dit zijn de laatste sokken uit het Op-Art boek, vernoemd naar de kunstenaar Heinz Mack.
Hij gebruikt in zijn werk veel zwart-wit rechte en gebogen lijnen, die naast elkaar geplaatst worden en zo beweging oproepen. Dit principe wordt ook gebruikt in het zogenaamde 'schaduwbreien', waar ribbelsteek in één kleur afwisselt met tricotsteek in een andere kleur. In het boek zijn de sokken uitgewerkt in felgroen en hardroze.
This is the last pattern from the Op-Art book, named after Heinz Mack.
Op-art artists, such as Heinz Mack (born 1931), evoke the impression of lines and curves by the juxtaposition of alternating black and white lines. This concept is also used in shadow knitting in which garter ridges in one color alternate with single rows of stockinette stitch in a contrasting color. In the book these socks are knit in shocking pink and vivid green.

En dit is mijn versie in zachtere tinten. De kleuren worden per blokje afgewisseld, dus eerst zandbeige voor de ribbelsteek en wit voor de tricotsteek, en dan weer omgekeerd. Dit zou voor visuele beweging moeten zorgen. Ik gebruikte restjes en natuurlijk had ik niet genoeg, dus uiteindelijk heb ik nog wat zachtgeel voor de tenen en de boord gebruikt.
This is my version of these socks, in sand and white. I ran out of yarn (using leftoves), so finished of with a soft yellow. For this sock design, the color of the garter ridges alternates between adjacent blocks (or crescents) of pattern to produce visual movement.

De sok wordt in modules gebreid, kleine halvemaantjes, van waaruit je steken opraapt om weer aan een nieuw halvemaantje te beginnen. De voorlopige opzet (het roze draadje) wordt uitgehaald en de sok wordt diagonaal aan elkaar gemaasd om het been te vormen. Van daaruit neem je dan steken op om de rest van de sok op de normale manier te breien. Dit was interessant als experiment, maar wordt zeker niet mijn favoriete sokbreimethode...

En dat was het dan. Alle 19 patronen uit het boek zijn gebreid. Ik heb er veel bij geleerd, en ik heb er toch een aantal mooie en draagbare sokken aan overgehouden. En ik heb nog wat opgestoken over Op-Art.

The op-art shapes are worked one on top of another in brick fashion in rows, then joined to form tubes. The leg is grafted together, and then the foot and toes are knit in 'normal' sock-knitting mode.
I did not enjoy these at all. It's very hard to get a neat seam diagonally. And now I have knit all 19 patterns from the book. I learned a lot, and I have some nice and wearable socks. Not all were a succes, but it was nice to have a focus on creative sock-knitting. And I learned a bit about Op-Art too!

 Fibonacci, de lievelingssokken van de dochter, en de eerste kleurinbreisokken die echt goed aanpassen
Fibonacci, welloved by my daughter, and the first colorwork socks I have knit that really fit well.
 

Crest  - sokken met kabeltjes. Ik dacht, 'dat ken ik', maar ik ben erin geslaagd om zowat alles fout te doen. Helemaal opnieuw begonnen, en toch nog gelukt tegen de deadline, dat gaf veel voldoening. En het zijn heel mooie sokken geworden.
Crest - socks with travelling stitches and cables. I really struggled with these, so finishing them against the deadline gave me a big sense of accomplishment.

Ludwig - de lievelingssokken van de zoon. Voor hem heb ik ze wat korter gemaakt dan in het boek, zo heeft hij zijn sokken graag. Dat vroeg wat nadenken, en was niet van de eerste keer juist, maar uiteindelijk toch weer een mooi eindresultaat.
Ludwig  - my son's favorites. I made them a bit shorter then in the book, as my son likes short socks. And of course I did not manage to do it properly, and had to restart, but all ended well in the end.

Voor 2016 staat mijn besluit vast: er komen nog wel sokken, maar alleen supersimpele! De ingewikkelde technieken houd ik voor andere projecten...
I am sure I will continue knitting socks in 2016, but my resolution is only to knit supersimple ones...

Op-Art socks - Bridget

Dit zijn de Bridget sokken uit het Op-Art boek.
These are the Bridget socks from the Op-Art book.

Ze zijn gebaseerd op het werk 'Arrest' van Bridget Riley.
Het patroon bestaat uit diagonaal versrpingende zich herhalende golven (niet aanbevolen voor wie snel zeeziek wordt). Hoe meer je ernaar kijkt, hoe meer je het gevoel hebt dat het patroon beweegt en rimpelt. Dit effect wordt versterkt door kleuren met veel contrast te gebruiken.
The pattern is inspired by the Arrest series by Bridget Riley. This pattern is generated with diagonally shifted recurring waves (not recommended viewing for those who suffer from motion sickness). As your eye focuses on the design, the flat surface appears to heave and ripple. After a while, the whole world seems to shift like a ship at sea. This effect is intensified by the degree of contrast between the two colors.

Ik gebruikte een 'semi-solid' paars, en een oranje-rood degradé garen met lang kleurverloop (Zauberball - kleur 'gebrannte Mandeln). Ik moet toegeven dat ik hier wel een fout gemaakt heb. Ik begon te breien met het eerste schema dat in het boek stond, en merkte dan dat ik eigenlijk het 'voet'-schema op het been gebreid had. Dan heb ik maar het schema voor het been ondersteboven op de voet gebreid. Het werkt, vind ik. Er is nog steeds het golvende effect, maar het is dus een ander patroon dan in het boek staat.

I used a semi-solid purple, and an orange-red Zauberball, color 'gebrannte Mandeln').
I must confess, I made a mistake. I started knitting, and when I finished the band heel (no gussets) I saw that I did the foot chart on the leg. So I turned the chart for the leg upside down, and did that one on the foot. I just did not feel like frogging the entire leg and heel. I think it works though, you still have the same ripple effect, just a different one then in the book.

Ik ben niet zo tevreden over mijn kleuren. Het paars semisolid is niet effen genoeg. Het patroon zou nog beter tot zijn recht komen in effen neutrale kleuren. Maar voor de rest wel een geslaagde sok!
I am  not too happy with my colors. The purple semi-solid is not solid enough. I guess I’ll have to reknit this pattern sometime in neutral solid colors….

Op-Art socks - Yaacov

 De volgende sok is geïnspireerd door Yaacov Agam. Ik raad je zeker aan om eens zijn naam op afbeelding te googlen, dan kom je erg kleurrijke kunstwerken tegen. Pas op dat je niet duizelig wordt! Hij is dan ook een vertegenwoordiger van de kinetische kunst. In dit patroon geeft positieve en negatieve vorm de indruk van cirkels.
The next sock is inspired by Yaacov Agam. In this typical pattern, positive and negative forms give the clear impression of circles, an effect that Yaacov Agam (born 1928) capitalized on for some of his op-art works.

En dit is mijn versie. Ik had eerst gepland om een ander strepend garen te gebruiken, maar toen las ik dat je een zogezegd 'degradé' garen nodig hebt. Dat garen heeft een langzaam kleurverloop, de kleuren lopen in elkaar over na ongeveer 10 rijen breien in een sok. Ik gebruikte Lang jawoll magic degradé in donkerblauw, flessengroen, paars en fel turquoise. En voor de contrastkleuren gebruikte in overschotjes uit de kast.

This is my version. The sock is knitted in the stranded technique with two balls of the same color-striping yarn. For the effect to work, the individual stripes should continue over ten or more rounds. I used Lang Jawoll magic degradé as a main color, and leftovers from stash as contrast colors.

Ook hier weer wordt er een aparte mindering gebruikt op de voetzool. De linkse en de rechtse voet 'leunen' naar elkaar toe, ze worden gespiegeld gebreid. En ja, sokken worden vuil als je langs een vijver loopt en de grond modderig is.
The gusset decreases are on the sole and are knit mirrored, so you have a distinct left sock and a right sock.

Hier zie je beter wat ik bedoel.
This picture shows it better, but is not as fun as a modeled shot in a sunlit, but still cold park in early spring (a bit muddy too).

Ik ben heel erg blij met het eindresultaat! En ik ben ervan overtuigd dat de collega die weggaat deze handgebreide kleurrijke sokken heel erg zal appreciëren.
I am chuffed to bits with these socks. And they will be a gift for another collegue who is leaving, one that I know will really appreciate colorfull handknit socks.

Freiburg, en Op-Art socks - Anni

Twee weken geleden waren we in Freiburg. Deze stad in Zuid-Duitsland is vooral gekend om de maatregelen in verband met ecologisch wonen, maar het is ook gewoon een charmant ouderwets stadje.

Two weeks ago we visited Freiburg. This city in the south of Germany is known for it's measures regarding 'green' living. We mainly visited the charming old city centre.

Dit vond ik een grappig winkeltje: een lederbewerker, die broeken, vesten... maar ook motorbekleding op maat maakt.
I liked this little shop: leatherwork for trousers, jackets and motors...

Er was ook een wolwinkeltje, vlakbij de kathedraal, met een apart soort 'vensterbankvitrine'. Maar ik heb me ingehouden, en niks gekocht (nu ja, één tijdschrift).
There was also this yarnshop, around the corner from the cathedral, with a quaint window sill counter. I showed great restraint, and bought nothing (except for one magazine).

Want het doel van de reis was: een halve marathon lopen. En dat is ook gelukt: proficiat aan mijn ijzeren man!
The goal for this trip was: running a half marathon, and my Iron Man succeeded. Congrats!

We reisden met de trein naar Freiburg. Ideaal om een eenvoudig paar sokken te breien.

Het volgende paar in het Op-Art sokkenboek is 'Anni', vernoemd naar textielkunstenares Anni Albers. Het ontwerp zelf is geïnspireerd op haar werk 'gele meander'.
The next pair of socks in the Op-Art book is called Anni, named after textile artist Anni Albers. The pattern is inspired by her work 'Yellow Meander'.
Anni Albers was born in 1899 and is one of the best known textile artists of the 20th Century. In 1922 she attended the Bauhaus as a student where she later met and married Josef Albers. After its closure in 1933, they moved to Black Mountain College where she taught until 1949.
In the 1940's Anni Albers' weavings were shown throughout the US and she published many articles on textiles and design, culminating in her 1949 show at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. The first of its kind for a textile artist at MoMA, the exhibition toured the US from 1951 until 1953, establishing Albers as the most famous weaver of the day. 

Een meander bestaat uit een doorlopende lijn die vorm aanneemt in een zich herhalend motief. Het kan gezien worden als een klein labyrinth.
A meander is a design formed by a continuous line that’s shaped into a repeated motif. It can be seen as a small labyrinth.

 

 Ik breide deze sokken in effen grijs. Telkens als er een sok uit het boek in aanmerking komt als mannensok, dan kies ik voor een neutrale kleur. De zoon heeft altijd sokken nodig, en er zijn ook nog altijd collega's die weggaan.... Ik vind ze wel mooi in een zonnige kleur, dus misschien brei ik deze nog wel eens.

I have knit these in solid gray. Whenever a sock in the book is suitable for a men's sock, I do them in a neutral color. DS is always in need of socks, and there are still collegues leaving. But I do love them in sunny yellow, so I might knit these again some day.

Probeersels - Trying out

Ik had veel goede voornemens voor 2015, onder andere meer met twijnend breien doen.
I had lots of knitting resolutions for 2015, one of them was to actually finish a twined knit project.

Vorige week was Carla in 't wolwinkeltje, om de workshop beginners twijnend te geven. Inge heeft hier op haar blog een leuk verslag over geschreven. Ik sprong nadien even binnen om mijn probeersel met het origineel te vergelijken. Het is duidelijk, mijn wanten worden veel te groot. Zelfs voor de ijzerenman zijn ze aan de grote kant, en veel te 'girly'. Ik zou al een vrouw met heel grote handen moeten vinden om deze cadeau aan te doen...
Last week Carla was in my local yarn store to teach the twined beginners workshop. Inge has published a report about this on her blog. I wanted to show my mitten, but it's clear after comparing with the original: this is going to be way too big. I would need to find a woman with very big hands to fit into this... And my IronMan has declared them 'too girly', so he won't wear them either.

Oplossing: het originele garen kopen, en opnieuw beginnen...
The solution: buy the right yarn for this kind of project, and start over...

Voornemen twee: Estse wanten breien. Maar ik slaag er maar niet in de juiste stekenproef te vinden.  Met 2.25mm is het te strak, met 2.5mm te los.
Oplossing: nieuwe vierkante naalden 2.5mm gekocht. Ik brei vaster met die vierkante naalden. Nu hopen dat het lukt. Of toch maar weer ander garen proberen?
Resolution two: knit a pair of Estonian mittens. But I struggle to get gauge. It's too tight with 2.25mm needles, and too loose with 2.5mm.
Solution: buy new square 2.5mm needles. I tend to knit tighter with those square needles. I hope this will work. Or I could try a different yarn?

Voornemen drie: ajourbreien in patentsteek verkennen. Ik was thuis met sinusitis. Na dag 3 is de hoofdpijn weg, en kon ik eens iets echt moeilijks opzetten… brioche tweekleuren lace met heel dun kantgewicht garen (1200m per 100g!). Patroon is willow uit het nieuwe boek van Nancy Marchant. Wat me echt geholpen heeft is de craftsy online-video les voor de opzet en de minderingen…Maar ondertussen heb ik een mindering over 5 steken verknoeid, en wordt dit een ramp.
Oplossing: opnieuw beginnen, maar misschien toch voor een eerste keer in een nieuwe techniek een iets dikker garen gebruiken?
Resolution three: explore brioche laceknitting. It took me a while to get the cast-on right, but thanks to the Craftsy online video class, I managed. I am using Bart&Francis quiviut-silk (gray) and Ripples dyecraft merinosilk laceweight (color Copper). Both are ultrathin yarns, the quiviut-silk has a little bit of halo, but not as much as a mohair yarn. I am really pleased with how it looks.
But I tried to frog back a few rows, and now it’s a mess. I like the effect in the ultrathin yarn, but am afraid it will be to narrow. 
Solution: start over with thicker yarn? 

Dan maar de volgende sok uit het Op-Art sokkenboek? Ja lap, dit is ook al een mislukking. Het is de eerste keer bij de patronen uit dit boek dat ook de manchet gebreid is in kleurinbreiwerk (corrugated ribbing). Dit wordt ook te strak, en dus niet draagbaar.
Oplossing: opnieuw beginnen met meer steken.
So maybe the next sock from the Op-Art sockbook will be a better project to start. But I overlooked that this is the first pattern in the book that has colorwork in the cuff (corrugated ribbing). So, this one is getting too tight also.
Solution: reknit from the start over more stitches.

En ik was ook nog met een trui begonnen...
And I also started a sweater...

Is er een probleem? Dat weet ik niet. Voorlopig is het een grote lap. Pas als ik hem in elkaar zet zal ik zicht op de zaak krijgen. Voorlopig kan ik alleen naarstig verderbreien...
I don't know if this is going in the right direction. For the time being, it's just a big pile of knitting. Only when I sew it together I will know if it looks right. I just can keep my fingers crossed and keep knitting...

Op-Art socks - Feny

De volgende sokken uit het boek zijn gebaseerd op het werk Feny, van Victor Vasarely.

The next socks from the book are inspired by Feny, by Victor Vasarely.

Als je in een tweedimensioneel patroon lijnen naar elkaar toe brengt, en weer uit elkaar trekt, krijg je dit driemensioneel effect. Voor de sokken heeft de ontwerpster gebruik gemaakt van twee technieken: mozaiek breien met afgehaalde steken, en schaduwbreien, waar ribbels altijd rechts contrasteren met effen tricot.
from the book :When you modify a two-dimensional pattern so that at some points the lines are brought together and at others stretched apart, you can create a stunning three dimensional effect. For this sock pattern,  I combined the slip-stitch mosaic technique—to compress the horizontal lines—with shadow knitting—to emphasize bright and clear lines that highlight where they’re wide and stretched. 

De sok wordt zijwaarts gebreid. Je begint met een voorlopige opzet (die later uitgehaald wordt). Je breit dus het been (wordt aan elkaar gemaasd) en de bovenvoet plat in heen- en weer-rijen.
You start the sock with a provisional cast-on. The colorwork leg and instep are worked flat in rows, then  the leg is grafted together.

Om deze sokken te doen passen moest ik weer heel wat aanpassingen doen. Meer details op mijn Ravelry-pagina. Nadat het been aan elkaar gemaasd is moet je steken opnemen voor de hiel, en rond de zool. Als laatste brei je dan de teen in het rond. Op een bepaald moment moet je met drie rondbreinaalden werken...  wat wel verwarrend was. Het voelt een beetje alsof je een octopus bent. Misschien is dit wel op te lossen door de sokken op een heel lange rondbreinaald te breien. Op het laatste viel ik zonder zwarte wol, dus sok twee is met turquoise afgewerkt. Nu ja, dat deel zit toch in mijn schoenen...
Conclusie: ik vind het patroon op zich mooi, maar dit was weer eens een uiterst ingewikkelde sok om te breien!
To get these socks to fit, I had to modify the pattern significantly. You can read the details on my Ravelry project page.  After the leg is grafted you have to pick up stitches for the heel, and around the sole. The part where you need 3 circular needles was a bit confusing. I felt like an octopus.  I think it should be possible to do them on one very long needle. I ran out of black, so had to finish it off with turquoise...

Not my favorite from the book, but I managed to knit socks that fit!

OpArt socks - Ludwig

De volgende sokken in het Op-art sokkenboek zijn gebaseerd op het werk van Ludwig Wilding. Dit was één van de favoriete patronen uit het boek voor mij. Een simpel ontwerp met afgehaalde steken, eenvoudig om te breien. En ook een perfecte mannensok, afhankelijk van welke kleuren je gebruikt.
The next socks in the Op-Art sockbook are based on the artwork of Ludwig Wilding. It's a simple design with slipped stitches, not too complicated to knit. And also very suitable as a men's sock, depending on which color you use.

Omdat de zoon graag korte sokken heeft besloot ik het patroon in te korten. Maar dan moet je wel nadenken over op welke rij je begint natuurlijk. De eerste poging is niet echt goed gelukt, het 'puntje' loopt niet door over de bovenvoet (niet dat de zoon dat erg zou vinden, maar kom). En ik ben een losse breister, zelfs met een 2mm is deze sok te los en weer te lang in de voet.
Because DS likes short socks, I decided to shorten the pattern. But I did not really think it through, and the pattern does not flow over the foot, the chevron is cut off. Not that DS would mind. It's also too long in the foot. I am a really loose knitter, it's difficult to get gauge.

Ik ben dus maar helemaal opnieuw begonnen. Ik dacht er opeens aan dat ik nog vierkante naalden 2mm heb, en daar brei ik strakker mee. Nu zien de sokken er veel beter uit, en ze passen (wat toch het belangrijkste is in een sok).

So I started completely over. I remembered I still have some 2mm square needles, and I knit tighter with those. The socks look much better, and they fit (which is the most important thing in socks).

Zoals altijd bij Stephanie Vanderlinden is er aan dit ontwerp weer een speciaal kantje. De wreefminderingen zitten onderaan op de zool van de sok. Dit geeft een mooi strakke pasvorm, en het patroon dat helemaal over de bovenvoet doorloopt. Ze passen voor de ijzerenman, die ik heb kunnen overhalen om model te staan. Maar wollen sokken krijg ik aan hem nog steeds niet verkocht!

As always with Stephanie Vanderlinden this design has a twist. The gusset decreases are placed on the sole of the sock. This makes for a good fit, and a design that flows over the upperfoot. They fit for my IronMan, and I could persuade him to model them for the photo. But he still does not want any handknit woollen socks from me!

Op-Art socks - Bora

Deze sokken zijn gebaseerd op het werk Bora, van Victor Vasarely.
These socks are inspired by the Bora series by Victor Vasarely.

Het patroon is heel simpel, rechtse en averechtse steken. Eén van de eenvoudigste patronen uit het boek. Ik breide ze met een heel mooi garen, the uncommon thread tough sock, in de kleur Cumulus (wolken). Dit was een cadeautje van een vriendin die dit uit Londen voor me meebracht.

The pattern in itself is very simple, just knit and purl stitches. I have knit these with a very nice skein of the uncommon thread tough sock, in the color Cumulus.

Simpel, maar toch een beetje apart. De hiel wordt gevormd door te meerderen in een driehoek. 

And as with allmost all Stephanie Vanderlinden patterns, this one has a twist. The gusset shaping is on the back of the heel. 

Dit was één van mijn inhaalposts in de kerstvakantie, ik breide deze nog vorig jaar. Maar voor 2015 blijf ik verder doen met de sokken uit het Op-Art sokkenboek. In februari komen de sokken van de cover aan bod, daar kijk ik echt naar uit.
