grrrrr....

... en met de titel van deze post bedoel ik niet 'groeten', maar wel grrrr.... van frustratie.
.... and with the title of this post I don't mean 'greetings', but grrr....'frustrated!'.


Er is weer een 'mystery sock' (aka mock) en deze keer is het thema 'kleuren inbreien'. De sok wordt van de teen naar boven gebreid.
July is colorwork month, and again there is a knitalong for a 'Mystery sock', aka mock.


dus vol goede moed begonnen, en dan maar direct met beide sokken tegelijkertijd...
maar zoals je in foto 1 kunt zien, heb ik de maat van mijn voet weer verkeerd ingeschat, en zijn ze veel te groot geworden.
So I started (a bit overzealous with 2 socks at the same time). But as you can see in picture 1, I overestimated my foot size, and the mock is too big. I always find it difficult with toe-up to determine where to start the heel.



als een project niet goed lukt, dan begin ik maar een andere kleurensok... veel makkelijker patroon; tot ik aan de hiel kom, en het ook niet helemaal meer weet. Het patroon is in het Duits. Ik zal een Duitse hulplijn moeten inschakelen.
When a project does not work for me, I tend to start another one, untill I bump into another hurdle...I don't get the heel treatment in this pattern either. The pattern is in German. I'll have to consult a German speaking knitter to understand it.

Dan maar een supersimpele vintage sok voor de zoon. Zwarte sokken fotograferen met de GSM is ook niet ideaal, maar veel valt er toch niet over te vertellen, over deze sok, behalve dat de zoon nu weer warme voeten heeft.
So I guess it's back to the super simple vintage socks for DS.

Maar die mock laat me niet los. Ik ga me er niet onder laten krijgen door een sok toch? Grrrr...
Ik heb dan maar wat sokkenchirurgie toegepast.
But the mock is still calling. Determined not to get beaten by a sock! So I perform some socksurgery....

en uiteindelijk zal ik nog met een draagbare sok eindigen. Ik ben er niet helemaal tevreden mee. Achteraf gezien zou ik misschien andere kleuren gebruikt hebben...maar ja, daarom heet het ook 'mystery sock' zeker?
...and in the end, I will have a wearable finished sock. In retrospect, I would have chosen other colors, but that's why it's a mystery, I guess.

oktober sokkenoogst

Ik ben een slechte blogster. Ga ik naar een workshop 'Estlands kantbreien', en neem ik mijn fototoestel niet mee...Gelukkig hebben Line en Carla wel al een verslagje op hun blog gezet.
Ik schrijf ook nog iets hoor! maar dan als ik mijn 'huiswerk' helemaal afgemaakt heb - het kleine proeflapje met de verschillende steken én aangenaaide boord...
I am a bad blogger... I attend a workshop on Estonian knitting an I completely forget to take my camera... Fortunately Line and Carla have already blogged about it. I plan to write something about it too, but first I have to finish my swatch with all the different stitches and sewn-on border...

Maar ondertussen : de sokken-oogst van oktober. Het thema was 'mannelijke' sokken breien - vertaald als 'sokken ontworpen voor mannen'.
Mannen zijn ongecompliceerd; ze willen simpele sokken in saaie kleuren. Ik heb de laatste tijd zoveel ingewikkelde sokken gebreid, dat gewoon simpele sokken opeens weer leuk werden. En al is de kleurenkeuze beperkt, ik kan een 'nieuw- voor-mij'-garen uitproberen.
De zoon kreeg volgende nieuwe sokken in oktober. 't Was wel nodig, het laatste jaar is hij niet echt meer aan bod gekomen. Hij heeft grote voeten (maat 46), maar heeft graag korte manchetten aan zijn sok; dus dat valt weer mee.
In the meantime I present - the october socks. The october theme with sockknittersanonymous was 'manly' socks (socks designed for men).
Men mostly want simple socks in boring colors. After all the challenging socks I have knit lately, it was nice to knit simple socks in 'new-to-me' yarns. So finally DS gets some new socks...


Globetrotter sokken - gebreid in Opal Harry Potter - kleur 'Hedwig' (de uil). Het patroon is een rib met rijstpapsteek (gerstekorrel in Nederland).

Simple Skyp socks - gebreid in Austermann Step,in een mooi jeansblauw. Er was ook een band jacquard wit-denim om de 10 rijen, maar dat heb ik ertussenuit geknipt. Het patroon is een brede platte rib met een klein verdraaid steekje als detail.
Simple Skyp socks - yarn is Austermann Step in denim. This colorway also had a band of jacquardstyle white-denim every 10th row or so, but I cut that one out. The pattern is a broad rib with a small twisted stitch detail in the middle.


En omdat de zoon kloeg over koude vloeren op zijn kot - een paar sloefen. Het patroon 'ribby slipper socks' vroeg om een heel dikke draad (superbulky) op naald 8. Die had ik niet, dus dan maar met 3 draden samen en op naald 7 gebreid - met de methode 'rondbreien op 2 rondbreinaalden'. Gebruikt garen - 2 draden grijsgroen 100% wol, en 1 draad khaki wol/camel. Lekker warme sloefen.
And because DS has a student room with a cold floor - a pair of slipper socks. Pattern asked for a bulky yarn an 8mm needles, I knit this with 3 strands of worsted held together; one of them is a camel-wool blend... very warm slipper socks.



En de laatste - 'Raymond'. Deze zijn ontworpen voor een man, maar het garen is een beetje 'te roze' voor de zoon. Ik heb het patroon dan maar aangepast en voor mezelf gebreid. Gebruikt garen : Tucana's dream merino-bamboe sokkengaren. Oorspronkelijk patroon : Vihtori socks - genoemd naar de grootvader van de Finse ontwerpster. Ik heb ze naar mijn grootvader genoemd...
And the last ones : Raymond socks. Because the yarn was 'too pink' for DS, I have reworked the pattern to fit my feet. Yarn is Tucana's dream merino/bamboo sock yarn. The original pattern was called 'vihtori', named after the grandfather of the Finnish designer. I have renamed them after my own grandfather.

This is getting a way too long post with 'look a sock'. Will try a shorter post next time...

holiday knitting ... vakantiebreien

Holiday knitting .... time to make progress on a big project. Sadly stalled now it is too hot, and nothing I take up in the evening... but there will be long winter nights when this will be the perfect project to work on.
Vakantiebreien ... tijd om aan een groot project te werken en echt vooruitgang te boeken. Nu ligt deze stil, 't is te warm en niet iets dat je 's avonds na het werk nog vlug eens doet. Maar er komen nog lange winteravonden, dan wordt dit weer het perfecte project.



On the road knitting : finished the 'Marseille socks' by Nancy Bush. Started a pair of socks for DD, didn't like one of the colors in the stripey sock yarns, and now I have to darn a lot of ends....Made a simple project complicated.
Onderweg breien : Marseille sokken (Nancy Bush) zijn af, en ik breide ook een paar sokken voor de dochter. Omdat ik 1 van de kleuren van deze gestreepte wol niet mooi vond, heb ik die ertussenuit gehaald. Nu heb ik veel draadjes om in te stoppen... simpel project moeilijk gemaakt dus.

sad story (sort of) - beetje triest verhaal

In between the planning and knitting of 'Leilani' I have managed to finish some socks.
DS prefers black, or navy, but an all black sock in a large size is just to boring for me to knit. So I made him these 'Harris tweed' with black heels and toes. The main color is a very dark burgundy with black flecks. He wants ribbed socks, no cables, nothing fancy : 19-year olds kan be quite conservative about their socks.
Tussen het plannen en breien van Leilani door heb ik 2 paar sokken gebreid. De zoon had nog een paar nodig, en ik breide deze de 'Harris tweed' sokken.(maat 46). Hij wil simpele sokken, liefst zwart. Deze is gebreid met zwarte hielen en tenen, en de hoofdkleur is een zeer donker bordeaux met zwarte vlekjes (onbekend garen uit een grote zak met overschotten). Hij wil ook geen patronen, of kabeltjes ! 19-jarigen kunnen nogal behoudsgezind zijn over hun sokken. Deze steek geeft 'blokjes'. Je breit gewoon 2 rijen2R2AV, en 2 rijen alles rechts.


Added : sad story - one of the socks shrunk. Apparently it hid in the leg of a pair of jeans. I think all in all they were worn 3 times. I received the yarn in a big bag with leftovers. Looks like this wasn’t a superwash sock yarn ! I guess I'll have to start another pair of large dark socks...which I don't mind really, I love knitting socks for their relaxing qualities - very zen.
Na 3 keer dragen zien ze er nu zo uit. Een van de sokken was in een pijp van de jeansbroek blijven steken, de snoodaard. Ik zal maar een nieuw paar donkere sokken in een grote maat beginnen....wat ik niet eens zo erg vind, sokken breien is zo simpel en tegelijk rustgevend. Echt zen!


I also knit a pair for me, in a more joyous color and pattern 'Charli's angels'. A very girly, girly sock. I felt happy just by looking at my knitting. If you become a member of the Dutch yahoogroup 'sokken-breien' , you get a sock knit-along every 2 months. These were fun to knit, and very quick. The yarn is Bergère de France 'Cablenyl', in the color 'reed'.
Ik heb ook een paar voor mezelf gebreid, in een frisse kleur en patroontje. Een echte meisjessok (alhoewel ik niet echt een 'meisje' meer ben). Ik werd helemaal vrolijk toen ik eraan werkte, en de sok-in-wording was ook mijn inspiratie voor de kleurkeuze van het gehaakte halssnoer. Ik denk wel niet dat ik die ooit samen zal dragen, wollen sokken en een lente-snoertje... Het garen is Bergère de France 'Cablenyl', in de kleur 'riet'. Het patroontje komt van de Nederlandse yahoo-groep 'sokken-breien'. Als je je aanmeldt kan je eens in de 2 maanden aan een 'samenbreisok' werken. De volgende samenbreisok is een echte stoere mannensok ...

a compliment...

My son and daughter were telling how low-maintenance they are, and that they don't cost me much, because they don't wear designer clothes... But of course, added my 18year old son, it would add up if you counted the value of all those uniqe, handknitted socks I have. And he continued about how much he loves those socks, warm in winter and surprisingly cool in summer... How could I deny him these pleasures ? All it takes is a stash-dive, and some mindless knitting evenings in front of the TV (lots of political debates with elections coming up here in Belgium). Those socks may look boring, but it feels good to know they are appreciated....

yarns used :
the black/white speckled one is one skein of Regia (my LYS), and toes and heels in a left-over bit of Meilenweit tweed (bought in Berlin in 2006).
the brown and grey speckled yarn is Annell super extra. It's a Belgian brand of sock yarn I use regularly, because it is cheap, hard-wearing and comes in a lot of colors (variegated too). I bought this ball in a very small yarn shop in the centre of Brussels. It used to be kept open by an older, knowleadgable lady. She retired, and a young, less knowleadgable lady took over. The shop was reduced to half it's size, and the choice of yarns was limited. The last time I went to Brussels, I noticed the shop doesn't exist any longer.
I have used some brown knitpicks 'essential' sock yarn for the heels and toes, a gift from Jane in Texas
pattern :
my own basic sock recipe. I knit a cuff for 15 rows, a leg part for 30 rows, knit a standard Dutch heel and finish of with a star toe. Usually I don't bother grafting the toe, I just knit until 8 stitches left and draw yarn through all stitches. I have heard referr to this as a 'cats arse' finishing. I wish I remember where I heard that one, but haven't told my son yet !

back on-line

This blog has been very quiet - the computer died. It left us for repairs, and it took 10 days to return ... They had to replace the grafic card, but as it was still under garanty - so no costs involved (fortunately).
I won't write much, just catch up with some pictures ...

I received a first package from my SP10 - sock yarn, tea, a candle and candy. Thanks SP !
No sign of my knitters treat exchange package yet, but she left me a message, so I know it's on it's way.



I have been swatching with the Bergère de France yarns. I didn't like knitting with the green and white linen-acrylic blend, so that one is out.

Then I swatched with some Phildar bambou that I bought on my trip to the seaside. I swatched for the 'ruffled surplice' - Interweave spring 07 issue. Beautifull yarn, nice pattern. BUT - I would have to buy a lot extra to knit this cardigan.
I really was in the mood for summer knitting, but would like to use up some stash. May has been an expensive month untill now, with a sister marrying and other stuff.
I'll dig out some more stash yarn, and see what I can make with that.
So, I really am between projects now.

I tried finding a good way to finish the lizard ridge - crocheting it together makes a rather lumpy finish. I'll have to undo that. I hate finishing. I knit a lot in the couch, watching (or listening) to the TV. To sew up an afghan, I need a lot of space, and the right mindset.
So - to sum it up : I swatched - no result yet. I tried to finish the afghan - I'll have to restart that. Deeply in need of some tangible results, I knitted socks.

I finished 2 pairs for DS - these are black and whites, knitted with leftovers of Lang 'jawoll', and Schoeller stahl 'sockina'. He likes short cuffs, so I always have leftovers. I also finished grumperina's 'Roza's socks' (no picture yet), started another pair for DS, and started 'spiral boot socks' - Interweave summer 07 issue. More pictures to come!
