Faire et refaire - Building Blocks

Eén van mijn doelstellingen van dit jaar was: projecten opnieuw ter hand nemen als ik er niet helemaal content mee was. Vorig jaar breide ik in de Stephen West Mystery Knitalong deze Building Blocks sjaal. Ik ben heel tevreden over de kleuren (die heb ik dan ook zelf gekozen), maar minder blij met de rare uitsteeksels die je krijgt als je de sjaal draagt.

One of my goals for this year was: take old projects that were not 100% succesfull, and rework them. Last year I have knit the Building Blocks shawl in the Stephen West Mystery knitalong. I am very happy with the colors (I should, as I selected them myself); but not so happy with the strange batwing flaps you get when you wear the shawl.

Eigenlijk is de sjaal terug te brengen tot een driehoek in stapjes, waar telkens een uitsparing is waar je extra steken hebt opgezet om de driehoek op te bouwen. Het komt er nu op aan om die uitsparingen op te vullen. Gelukkig heeft FiberRachel op Ravelry hier een oplossing voor gevonden, en moest ik zelf mijn hoofd niet breken over hoe ik dit moest doen...

This shawl is basically a stepstair triangle shape, with 'voids' where you add extra stitches to build up the triangle. Luckily I did not have to break my head over how to fill in the corners under the litlle batwing flaps. FiberRachel on Ravelry  has a very nice tutorial...

Acht vakjes om in te vullen, en elk vakje kostte mij ongeveer een uur. Ideaal dus om te doen terwijl ik proeflapjes breide voor het nieuwe Stephen West-mysterie. Na één week breien had ik een veel draagbaardere sjaal!
Eight corners to fill in, and each piece took me about one hour. So this was an ideal projet inbetween the swatching for the 2017 Stephen West-mystery. After one week of knitting I ended up with a much more wearable shawl!

Alleen: iets nieuws beginnen is veel leuker, uitdagender, spannender... dan iets herwerken. Toch vind ik dat dat meer moet doen, iets opnieuw vastpakken, en het écht goed afwerken. Want 'Faire et refaire' heeft eigenlijk als ondertoon: doe het direct goed, dan moet je geen dubbel werk doen. Mijn excuus hier was wel dat het een mysterie-project was, zodat ik niet wist waar het naartoe ging. Maar nu is die dus écht af, en wordt die een nieuwe favoriet. Ik vind hem wel niet zo goed passen bij mijn zwarte winterjas, dus nu een mooie grijze jas kopen?
But, but... Starting a new project is much more fun then reworking an old one! I am more and more convinced we should all occassionaly go back to our older projects, and rethink our choices, pick up the project and finish it properly. 'Faire et refaire' has a negative undertone: if you do not do your work well, you'll have to redo, and that will cost you more time eventually. My excuse with this project is that it was a mystery knitalong, so I did not know where it was going. But now the shawl is really finished. I just don't think it goes with my black wintercoat. Off to buy a nice gray coat?

Speckle&Pop - SpikkelPop

Een jaarlijkse traditie, de mystery knitalong van Stephen West....dit keer met de prikkelende titel 'SpikkelPop'. Het enige dat je weet is dat je minstens 3 gespikkelde garens nodig hebt, die qua kleur in elkaar overvloeien. Daarbij heb je ook nog 5 contrastkleuren, liefst fel afstekend.

It becomes an anual tradition, the mystery knitalong by Stephen West, this time the pattern is  'Speckle&Pop'. The only thing you know at the start is that you need 3 speckled yarns that 'fade' into each other, and also 5 contrastcolors with a lot of 'pop'.

 

Eerste proeflapje met de garens die ik in Barcelona gekocht heb, en een effen babyblauw. Als contrastkleuren haal ik een pakket mini-bolletjes Wollmeise uit de kast. Het geeft een dromerig, zacht gevoel, maar jammer genoeg haal ik de stekenproef niet die in het patroon staat. Dit werkt dus niet.

Een tweede proeflapje met handgeverfde, ietwat dikkere sokkenwol. De overgang van felgroen naar blauwgroen is misschien wat te abrupt? Ik zou eigenlijk een licht blauwgroen nodig hebben, maar dat heb ik niet in mijn voorraad. En ik heb me voorgenomen nu niets meer bij te kopen. De stekenproef is OK, ik zit op het goede pad!
I swatched with slighty heavier yarns, and I like the drape and feel better. I am not sure if I like the green on my blue swatch. I should use a medium teal yarn to get a good fade, but I don’t have that color in my stash. My gauge is OK, so I am on the right track!

Derde poging. Ik probeer tinten paars als hoofdkleur, met een beetje beige. En als contrastkleuren blauwzwart, donkerlila, felpaars, goudgeel en groen met een gele ondertoon.  Eigenlijk heb ik geen gespikkelde wol meer als hoofdkleur, en zijn mijn contrastkleuren zijn niet zo fel contrasterend. Ik wijk dus nu al af van het patroon, nog voor ik weet wat het gaat worden...Maar dit lijkt me gewoon harmonieuzer.

Third try. I am using shades of purple as main colour. One is variegated sand/lila. The contrastcolours are blueblack, dark lila, bright purple, green and gold. I don't have any speckles, and 3 of my contrast colours do not 'pop'. But,  thhis purple combination looks more harmonious to me, so, purple it is!

En dan komt het eigenlijke breien van de sjaal, en ondertussen nog wat met de kleuren spelen. Dat was het plezantse deel van dit project! Voor wie wil weten wat ik juist gebruikte, kijk eens op mijn Ravelry-pagina. 

Eerlijk gezegd, toen het deel kwam waar er stond 'gebruik 62 steekmarkeerders' heb ik afgehaakt. 

During the actual knitting of the shawl I enjoyed the part where I kept on adjusting my colors and blending and mixing the whole palette. That was the best part of this project! If you want to see which yarns I used, check out my Ravelry page. Once the pattern asked to use 62 stitch markers, I kind of decided that this was going to be a too exuberant shawl for my taste...

In het patroon komt er nog een hele brede boord, met grote gaten, rare driehoekjes en briochesteek. Ik breide gewoon 8 rijen ribbelsteek, en deed een picot-afzet met een ander kleurtje.

I do like the border that is in the pattern, with the brioche and the big holes, but I would preferr it as an exuberant ending of a very simple shawl. I decided to finish this shawl by simply knitting 8 rows in purple, and do a picot cast-off in a contrasting colour.

Volgende keer als mijn man foto’s maakt moet ik hem vragen om te controleren of mijn haar goed ligt. Blijkbaar ziet hij dat niet…Nu moet ik alleen nog een mooie speld vinden om deze omslagdoek te dragen.
Next time I ask my husband to take a picture I need to remind him to check if my hair looks good. Apparantly he does not notice. The only thing to do now is buying a nice pin to wear this shawl....

uit het boekje - knitting from my shelf

De uitdaging in de Nederlandse sokkenbreigroep was: 'uit het boekje', dus een patroon dat je op papier in je boekenkast hebt. De dochter heeft aangegeven dat ze nog sokken kan gebruiken. En toevallig had ik op vakantie in Duitsland nog wat boekjes ingeslagen...
The challenge in the Dutch sockknitting group was 'knitting from your shelf', knit a pattern that you only have on paper. I just returned from a trip to Germany, where I stocked up on small knitting booklets...

... maar uiteindelijk koos ik toch voor een boekje dat ik al langer in de kast had liggen. De dochter vond de oranje streng wel mooi die ik in de sockmadness wedstrijd gewonnen heb. Dus deze ging mee naar Barcelona, want sokken zijn voor mij toch nog altijd het ideale reisbreiproject. Doelstelling: terugkomen uit Barcelona met een paar sokken.
... but finally I decided on a pattern from an older Dutch knitting book. And my daughter liked the orange yarn I had won in the Sockmadness competition. So I took these with me to Barcelona. Socks are the ideal travel project, small and portable.

 

Ik breide het patroon: V-vorm met kabels over 60 steken, mijn standaard stekenaantal. Maar de Hazelknits Artisan sock is wat dikker dan standaard sokkenwol. Tijdens het breien had ik al het gevoel dat er iets niet klopte. De sok  is duidelijk te groot uitgevallen, zelfs voor de dochter met maat 41.  Ik kwam dus terug uit Barcelona zonder sokken voor de dochter.
I started the pattern over 60 stitches, which is  my default number of stitches for a sock. But the Hazelknits Artisan sock is a bit thicker then the usual sockyarn. I already had a feeling that something was not quite right. Obviously this sock is way too big, even for my daughter with big feet. So, I came back from Barcelona without a pair of socks for my daughter...

Gelukkig nam ik twee projecten mee. Ik boekte toch wat vooruitgang met de sjaal in Ijslandse wol voor de collega die met pensioen gaat dit najaar. Was wel warm om dit in Barcelona te breien, dus alleen 's avonds met de airco op!
... but I made some progress on the scarf in Icelandic wool for the colleague who is retiring this Fall.

Voor de sokken deed ik een tweede poging met hetzelfde sokpatroon en ander garen. Foute garenkeuze, de kabeltjes vallen een beetje weg. Ik besloot al snel dat dit het ook niet zou worden. Opnieuw uithalen dan maar.
Second try with the same sockpattern and a different yarn did not work out either. So I decided to frog this one also.

Een patroon uit een ander boek dan maar? In Socks Architecture vind je allerlei aparte hielen en tenen, met voor- en nadelen van de verschillende constructies. Bovendien zijn er ook nog 17 volledig uitgewerkte patronen, in 5 verschillende maten.
A pattern from another book maybe? Socks Architecture describes several heels and toes, and contains 17 patterns in 5 different sizes.

Dit patroon gebruikt een Balbrigan hiel. Je mindert je steken weg in de hiel. Dan vouw je de hiel dubbel, en maast die aan elkaar. Gestreept garen is ideaal voor zo’n patroon. Maar: geen wreefminderingen maakt dit minder geschikt voor personen met een hoge wreef. En laat de dochter nu net een hoge wreef hebben. 
This pattern uses a Balbrigan heel. The decreasing is done in the heelflap. You end up with a small number of stitches that you graft together. I used a selfstriping yarn, which worked very nicely with an easy pattern. But because you don't have any gusset decreases, this sock pattern is not suitable for people with a high gussett. And as it happens, my daughter has a high gusset.

Ik vrees dus dat ik deze sokken voor mezelf zal moeten houden...
 It looks like I will have to keep these socks for myself...

dubbelbreien mislukkingen - double knitting failures

Meestal schrijf ik op de blog over projecten die af' zijn., waar ik trots op ben. Maar niet alles lukt, en misschien is het wel even interessant om te schrijven over mijn mislukkingen? (op breigebied dan toch).
Begin dit jaar had ik me voorgenomen om dubbelbreien uit te proberen. En toevallig (of niet) was er in 't wolwinkeltje een lessenreeks rond gepland. Dubbelbreien is een techniek waar je twee lagen tegelijkertijd breit. Beide kanten zien eruit als tricotbreiwerk, met de kleuren omgekeerd.
Sometimes things just don't work out... and maybe that's as interesting to share as yet another finished object? I wanted to practise doubleknitting, and this is the result...

Ik begon met iets simpel, een hoesje voor een bril. Voordeel is dat je dit in het rond breit, je kijkt altijd op dezelfde kant. Je moet dus niet nadenken over welke kleur je gebruikt (gespiegeld) aan de achterkant. En het was een goede manier om verschillende technieken van draadspanning te oefenen. Alleen is het veel te groot uitgevallen ,dus totaal onbruikbaar als brillenhoes...
I started with something simple, a double knit spectacle case. It has the advantage that it is knit in the round, so you don't have to worry about what color you should use on the backside. It was also good to practise the different ways to tension the yarn. But unfortunately it came out way too big, so it cannot be used as a spectacle case...

 

En dan het echte werk. Ik wou de mooie streng goudgeel zelfstrepend garen die ik van de zoon cadeau gekregen heb verwerken in een sjaal met blaadjesmotief, geïnspireerd door Kaffe Fassett. Misschien allerlei neutrale tinten? Maar na een paar rijen al was het duidelijk dat de tekening niet goed uitkomt., wegens onvoldoende contrast in mijn kleuren.

Onto the next level. My plan was to knit a Kaffe Fassett inspired scarf with the yellowgolden skein of yarn that I received as a present from my son. Maybe pairing it with neutral colors? But even after a few rows it was clear that this did not work, some of the browns don't provide enough contrast...

 

Tweede poging: het zelfstrepend garen met een grasgroen Wollmeise. Qua kleur gaat dit wel, maar de dikte van de twee garens is té verschillend, en dat levert dus ook niet echt een mooi resultaat op.
Second try: the selfstriping with dark green Wollmeise. Colorwise this is OK, but the gauge difference is too big,it looks sloppy.

Derde poging: zelfstrepend met een appelgroen dikker garen. Alleen heb ik van dat groen niet zo veel in mijn voorraad, 2 strengen maar. En in plaats van een lange smalle sjaal met een paar blaadjes, besluit ik nu een bredere sjaal te breien. Ik gebruik een voorlopige opzet. Als de sjaal wat kort uitvalt kan ik beide einden aan elkaar mazen om een colsjaal als eindresultaat te hebben. Ik heb er goede moed op!

Third try: the selfstriping yarn with green Malabrigo. The colors work nice together and the gauge is OK. I am just not sure if I have enough of the green yarn in stash. So I decide to start with a provisional cast-on. If the scarf ends up a bit short, I can graft it together and transform it into a cowl.

Na 3 maand af en toe aan dit project te breien besluit ik uiteindelijk dat het niet werkt. Op de voorkant zie je de blaadjes wel, maar aan de achterkant verdwijnt het patroon in iets vaag en onherkenbaar. Ik denk dat het te maken heeft met het feit dat de blaadjes beginnen met één kleur aan de onderkant, en dan overgaan in de tweede kleur aan de bovenkant.
After 3 months of on and of knitting on this, I am just not happy with the outcome. The pattern of the  leaves is OK-ish on the front, but disappears on the back... I think it has to do with the way the leaves are formed, they start with one colour on the bottom, and change into the second color on the top of the leaf.

Ik heb dus maar alles uitgetrokken, en daarna uren rondgesurfd voor een project dat wél zou werken met deze garens. Het wordt herfst, misschien moet ik dit weer eens oppakken!

So I frogged the whole thing, and spent hours surfing around for a pattern that would work with my yarns. Leaves are falling, it's autumn, so maybe I should pick this up again?

Barcelona

Onze laatste huisruil deze zomer was in Barcelona. We waren er twee weken na de aanslag. De Ramblas lagen nog bezaaid met bloemen en kaarsen....
Our last home exchange this summer was Barcelona. We were there two weeks after the attack. The Ramblas were still covered with flowers and candles... 


Het is niet onze eerste keer in Barcelona. Daarom beslissen we een 'tweede laag' te leggen, en de minder voor de hand liggende bezienswaardigheden te bezoeken. Het klooster van Santa Maria de Pedralbes is een mooie, rustgevende plek, bereikbaar met het openbaar vervoer.
Telkens als we een museum bezoeken vraagt de gids in mijn gezelschap of ze een Nederlandstalige audiotour hebben? Dat is een beetje een terugkerende running joke, want altijd zeggen ze 'Nee, sorry'; of soms lachen ze ons zelfs uit: Nederlands? Maar hier zeiden ze tot onze verbazing: Ja, natuurlijk. Alsjeblief. Maar dan wel in het Catalaans.
This is not our first visit to Barcelona. We decided to add a 'second layer', and visit the less obvious places in the city. The cloister of Santa Maria de Pedralbes is a peacefull, interesting place to visit. You can get there by public transport. We used the busses a lot. They are usually a little less crowded then the subway, and on most routes there is a seperate bus lane, so they don't get stuck in traffic (or less then the cars anyway). And with the app it's easy to find your way around.

Midden in de stad, achter de kathedraal ligt het museum Frederic Marés. Deze beeldhouwer was een verwoed verzamelaar. Buiten lopen grote groepen toeristen, en ook de bar op de binnenplaats met fontein heeft goed te doen. Binnen zijn we eigenaardig genoeg ongeveer alleen.  Naast een indrukwekkende verzameling beeldhouwwerk, van de middeleeuwen tot Rodin, vind je ook een verzameling curiosa. Een beetje bizar, maar fascinerend.

The Frederic Marés museum hosts a big collection of sculptures, from the Middle Ages to Rodin, but also a slightly bizarre collection of 'Curiosa'.

En nee, geen Sagrada Familia of Parc Guell voor ons. Er zijn nog andere gebouwen van Gaudi, zoals bvb. deze Torre Bellesguard.
There are also lesser known buildings then Sagrada Familia by Gaudi, for instance this one, the Bellesguard Towers.

Ik was helemaal niet van plan om wol te kopen. Maar wat doe je als je tijdens een concert in het museum uit het raam kijkt en ziet dat je echt vlakbij de wolwinkel zit?
I did not plan on buying yarn. But by serendipity, we booked tickets for a concert in a museum, right across the yarn store...

Even kijken kan toch geen kwaad...
I guess there is no harm in just have a look around?

Binnenkort start de volgende mystery knitalong van Stephen West, Speckle and Pop. Ik weet nog niet of ik die ga meedoen, maar het kan geen kwaad om wat gespikkeld garen in mijn voorraad te hebben!
The next mystery knitalong by Stephen West is called Speckle and Pop. I am not sure yet if I will participate, but it can't hurt to stock up on speckles!

Pierre de Lune

 

Wat is het ideale project om mee op reis te nemen?

Het moet voldoende afwisseling bieden, maar mag toch niet té moeilijk zijn. Het mag ook niet te veel plaats in de koffer innemen, dus met één of twee strengen wol moet je je drie weken kunnen bezig houden. En omdat ik  het vaste voornemen heb om van elke workshop die ik volg minstens één afgewerkt project te maken, werd mijn reisproject voor Ijsland en Duitsland uiteindelijk deze omslagdoek, Pierre de Lune. Dit is de foto van het patroon, dus zo zou het eindresultaat er moeten uitzien...

The ideal travelling project for me is not too complicated, but with enough different elements, and of course, lightweight.  As I made the resolution to finish one project for every workshop I take, I selected this shawl, Pierre de Lune, to travel with me to Iceland and Germany. This is the picture of the pattern, so this is how the final object is supposed to look like....

 

 

En zo ziet mijn eindresultaat er uit. Het is een eigen creatie geworden, een asymmetrische driehoek.

In Reykjavik zag het er nog goed uit...

In München begon ik te twijfelen. Mijn tweede streng wol slonk alarmerend snel, en ik was (dacht ik) nog lang niet aan het einde van het aantal rijen. En toen viel mijn eurocent. Ik las het patroon verkeerd. Dit moet een driehoeksjaal worden die dwarsgebreid is met verkorte rijen. Ik dacht dat de rij telkens 1 steek korter moest worden, maar eigenlijk is het twee steken (knit to 1 stitch before double stitch, then T+W). Nog eens natellen en mijn rij had al 70 steken minder lang moeten zijn!

In München I started doubting. My yarn was going at an alarming rate, and I still had not reached the point where I was supposed to end. And then I dawned on me that I had reading the pattern wrong all the time. The shawl is knit on the diagonal with shortrows. I should have turned two stitches before the double stitch, and I was doing it one stitch before the double stitch. At this point my row should have been 70 stitches shorter already!

 

 

Als ik thuis met een probleem in mijn breiwerk zit dan leg ik dat opzij en begin met iets anders. Op reis loop ik dan eens een wolwinkel binnen...

When I hit a snag in my knitting, at home I would put it aside and start with something else. When travelling, I visit a yarnshop to buy some more wool...

 

Na een nachtje slapen besloot ik er een eigen creatie van te maken. Ik telde het aantal rijen dat ik nog moest breien, en smokkelde de 70 steken weg door mijn verkorte rijen nu telkens 10 steken korter te maken. Mijn redenering: ik probeer dit, en is het niet goed, dan kan ik altijd helemaal opnieuw beginnen...

After sleeping over it I decided to make it my own creation. I counted the number of rows I still had to knit, and decreased the 70 stitches by making the short rows every 10 stitches. If this did not work out, I could always start over completely...

 

Maar dat zal niet nodig zijn. Ik ben eigenlijk heel blij met de vorm van deze omslagdoek!

But that won't be necessary. I am actually quite happy with the shape of this shawl!

 

Ik gebruikte  een superzacht garen, 50% merino, 50% zijde - Augustine. En ook de zusters Augustinessen in het klooster van Notre Dame de la Rose vinden het geslaagd. Deze plek in Lessines is trouwens heel erg de moeite om te bezoeken!

I used a 50% merino, 50% silkyarn for this project, called Augustine. And even the nuns in the cloister of Notre Dame de la Rose are happy with my creation...
