Day 3 - Tallinn, Estonia

August 4th - We arrived in Tallinn with not a cloud on the sky. Glorious weather. Merike had given us a 'port lecture' the evening before, talking about Estonian handicraft traditions, and how to see wether a souvenir is 'handmade in Estonia' or not.

4 augustus - We kwamen aan in Tallinn onder een stralend blauwe hemel. Merike had de avond voordien nog een lezing gegeven over Estse handwerktradities, en ons ook uitgelegd waar op te letten bij het kopen van handwerksouvenirs.

She also set up the first meeting in the shop of the Estonian folk art and craft union. We met with textile artist Riina Tomberg, who wrote the book 'Vatid, Troid, Vamsad- Knitted jackets from West-Estonian islands' (scroll down on the link if you want to read a summary of this book in English). The book is in Estonian and English, so I bought a copy.

Ze regelde ook een ontmoeting in de winkel van de Estse volkskunstorganisatie, met Riina Tomberg. Zij is een textielkunstenares die onlangs een boek publiceerde over traditioneel breiwerk op Estse eilanden. Het boek is in het Ests en het Engels, dus kocht ik een exemplaar.

It's not a pattern book, it's about history of the knitwear on those islands.

Het is geen patronenboek, eerder een cultuurhistorisch boek over breiwerk op die Estse eilanden.

We spent some time in the shop of the handicraft association.

We bleven nog wat langer in de winkel, en bewonderden al het breiwerk dat daar te koop was (sommigen kochten ook heel wat).

Lots of knitwear to buy, but no yarn or pattern books.

Heel wat gebreide truien, mutsen, sjaals, sokken, kanten omslagdoeken ... maar dus geen wol of patronen.

Afterwards we were met for coffee by one of Merikes relatives, who showed her fine knit lace sweater. Really gorgeous !
The rest of the day we enjoyed Tallinn, a beautifull city. This is not a touristy blog, so I won't bore you with too much photo's. Let me just say that I really would like to go back one day !

Daarna hadden we nog een ontmoeting met een nicht van Merike, die ons haar superfijne handgebreide trui toonde. Ze was ook geïnteresseerd in ons breiwerk, en probeerde een paar steken op onze linnen boodschappentas.
De rest van de dag genoten we van Tallinn. Dit is geen toeristische reisblog, en ik zal niet te veel foto's tonen. 't Volstaat te zeggen dat ik heel graag eens naar Tallinn terug zou willen keren !

Day 2 - at sea

August 3d was a day at sea, and that also ment a whole day knitting workshop. The weather was perfect for knitting - cold and rainy (not that we noticed, because we were inside in a room withouth windows the whole day).
Merike Saarnit is from Estonian descent, and she wanted to share her enthousiasm for a very Estonian fiber - linen, combined with another Estonian tradition - knitting lace. Now here in Belgium we have a fair lot of linen too. In fact, I wear a lot of linen in summer. But I had never knitted with it. We did 2 projects : a shopping bag, and a visor.

3 augustus was een dag op zee, en dus een hele dag breicursus. Het was een perfecte breidag - nat en koel. Niet dat we daar iets van merkten, we zaten een hele dag in een kamer zonder ramen.
Merike Saarnit is een Amerikaanse van Estse afkomst, en ze wou met ons haar enthousiasme delen voor een Estse traditie - linnen, gecombineerd met de traditie van Ests kantbreien. In België hebben we ook heel wat linnen. Ik draag zelfs veel linnen kleding in de zomer, maar ik had nog nooit met 100% linnen gebreid (wel met katoen/linnen menggarens). We startten 2 projecten : een boodschappentasje en een zonneklep.


This is the (almost) finished bag. I still need to do something about handles. For pictures sake, I just wove my circular needle through it. The pattern used twisted cords, so you have a drawstring closure. Not sure if I want that. I am also thinking about lining this little bag, to make it more practical.
I must admit, although I love wearing linen, I did NOT like knitting with it. It felt like string, it hurt my hands, and it splitted. I hated it. But I persevered, and finished both projects. Knitting lace with linen yarn is difficult - as it has no give, manipulating the stitches is hard on the hands. And somehow it took me a long time to read this lace pattern. You would suspect that when I am able to knit Mystery stole3 without any big problems, that this 3 row repeat would be easy, wouldn't you ? And when I found a mistake, laddering down and hooking up was a pain to do as well. I knitted and knitted every evening on this bag, so this small bag took me 10 days. You start out with a knitted rectangle for the bottom, pick up stitches and knit the lace pattern in the round.

Dit is de (bijna afgewerkte) boodschappentas. Ik moet nog een handvat bedenken, maar voor de foto heb ik gewoon mijn rondbreinaald door de gaatjes geweven. In het patroon sluit de tas met een dubbel gedraaid koord. Ik denk er ook over om een voering in de tas te voorzien, om het wat praktisch bruikbaarder te maken.
Ik hou van mijn linnen kleding, maar ik hield NIET van breien met deze draad. Het was alsof ik met een ruw koord aan het breien was. Hard voor de handen, stijf, en het splijt. Niet leuk. Maar ik hield vol, en heb de 2 projecten uitgebreid. En ajourbreien met linnen is nog moeilijker, omdat het garen niet meegeeft als je de steken manipuleert (2 samenbreien achter id steek, dubbele omslagen die op de volgende rij moeten gebreid worden etc...). Ik had ook moeite met het patroon, wat wel eigenaardig is als ik de mysterie stola 3 zonder probleem kan breien... Ik zal het maar niet hebben over fouten herstellen in dit garen... Ik breide en breide en breide elke avond aan dit tasje, en na 10 dagen besloot ik het af te kanten. Je begint met een gebreide rechthoek voor de bodem, en raapt daarond steken op om het ajourpatroon in het rond te breien.


This is the visor. I still need to finish sewing this up. I don't wear visors, but I must admit it looked cute on the younger ones of the group. It was a nice small project (only 23 rows), that involves knitting lace with the traditional Estonian nupps, and shortrowing in lace. Clever project, and it would make a nice gift. Merike also had an other lace pattern for this visor. And by the way - she is working on a book, where she will take traditional Estonian patterns, used in more contemporary projects.

Dit is de zonneklep. Ik moet die nog verder opnaaien op de schuimrubber ondergrond. Ik draag geen zonnekleppen, maar ik moet toegeven dat deze leuk stond op de jongere vrouwen in de groep. Het was een leuk klein project (23 rijen). Hierin zijn interessante technieken verwerkt : ajourbreien met Estse bobbels (nupps), en breien op verkorte rijen. Een interessant project, en een leuk cadeautje. Merike had ook nog een ander ajourpatroon voor een zonneklep. Ze werkt ook aan een boek waarin ze traditionele Estse patronen eigentijds verwerkt.

I had a fabulous time and gorgeous weather in the Baltic, and now don't really now where to start my story. I have to tell something about every port I visited, and also about the knitting workshops I took with Merike Saarnit. Maybe the best thing is just to start with day 1 ?
That would be august 2d, Copenhagen.
I managed to get to Sommerfuglen, my favorite yarn shop, where I first discovered Hanne Falkenberg, way back in 1997. And with an upcoming birthday, I decided to buy a new HF kit. No picture - I had it shipped back home, and it hasn't arrived yet. It's the new design 'Plissé' - I tried it on in the shop, and it looks great on me.

I also bought some Kauni yarn, the yarn that has very long color repeats. Enough for a sweater, not sure what it will be yet.

I went back to the airport hotel where my roommate was staying. I met up with Cate, with whom I would be sharing a cabin for the next 10 days. She gave me a book (favorite socks), and a very nice skein of her own handspun. I cannot spin, so I really am in awe !

Then, we headed to the pier, to discover the ship we would be sailing on. This is Holland-America's 'Veendam' - one of the 'smaller' vessels, next to the bigger 'Rotterdam'. The Veendam hosts 1200 something passengers, and 600 crew.

Of course, I had some exploring to do. Pictures tell more then words, so I'll leave it at that.

I'll talk a bit more about my voyage tomorrow.

Ik had een fantastische reis en schitterend weer in de Baltische zee, en nu weet ik niet goed waar ik met mijn verslagje moet beginnen. Ik heb iets te vertellen over elke haven die we aangedaan hebben, en over de cursussen met Merike Saarnit. Misschien dan maar best beginnen met dag 1? Dat is dan 2 augustus in Kopenhagen.
Ik begon mijn dag goed met een bezoek aan mijn favoriete wolwinkel daar, nl. Sommerfuglen. In 1997 stapte ik voor het eerst deze winkel binnen, en ontdekte Hanne Falkenberg. Elke keer als ik weet dat iemand naar Kopenhagen gaat, vraag ik om iets uit die winkel mee te brengen. Nu kon ik zelf de nieuwere ontwerpen van Hanne Falkenberg aanpassen, en omdat ik verjaar op het einde van deze maand, heb ik mezelf getracteerd op een kit - 'Plissé'. Die stond me erg goed (ik ben klein en rond). Ping-pong was ook leuk. Verder kocht ik nog genoeg Kauni wol voor een trui.
Daarna op naar het schip : de Veendam is één van de 'kleinere' schepen van Holland-America. Hier zie je ze aangemeerd naast de Rotterdam. Eerste dag was vooral het schip verkennen - de foto's spreken voor zich.

more cruise-workshops to prepare

Workshop 2 will be - knit a miniature Kihnu troi sweater. Apparently, Kihnu is an island on the coast of Estonia, with very distinct traditions. It is protected as 'untangible' heritage by Unesco. Now the sweaters look very tangible to me !
I found this picture on an Estonian website. I would say, be adventurous and click the links ! You will find some very interesting toys and knits. Traditionally the Kihnu sweaters are knitted in cream and blue, with red accents. No yarn in my stash that matches, but I hope to shop for 3 balls of yarn either in Tallinn or Helsinki. We are taking this workshop on our 2d day at sea.

Workshop 2 : brei een miniatuur Kihnu troi truitje. Kihnu is een eiland voor de kust van Estland, met heel aparte tradities. Het is door unesco beschermd als cultureel erfgoed vanwege alle mondelinge en 'ontastbare' tradities. De truien lijken me wel erg tastbaar. Ik vond de foto op een Estse website, vol met foto's van speelgoed en truien. Plezant om eens op te klikken. Ik begrijp geen Ests, maar 'muts' en 'mantel' zijn blijkbaar hetzelfde als in het nederlands.

Our 3d workshop will be on knitting souvenir mitten dolls. I suppose this is when you knit miniature mittens, and stuff them to make them look like dolls. Or you could knit real mittens of course. I found these leftovers of the right weight yarn in my stash, that I think will work. Forest green, red, black, blue and cream - screams mitten to me.

In onze 3de workshop gaan we kleine souvenir wanten/popjes breien. I veronderstel dat je dan miniatuur wantjes breit, die je opvult om er als popjes uit te zien. Je kan natuurlijk ook gewoon wanten breien. Deze zak met overschotjes zal daarvoor moeten dienen. Donkergroen, rood, blauw, zwart en wolwit, dat zijn echte 'wanten'kleuren !

Rummaging through my stash for yarn I found this - my oldest UFO. Also my oldest failure that for some reason I have not thrown away. It's the back of a cardigan that I must have started in the late 80's. Intarsia was the big thing to knit then. This was in a Dutch magazine called 'Ariadne'. In the magazine it was a cotton sweater in red and green, I made a cardigan in black and white. It was a failure for different reasons, you can't see it on the picture :
- the back is longer then the front. Not easy to adjust with all the intarsia going on
- the paler, flecked yarn is a alpaca/silk/wool blend (Pingouin Grège). It sheds all over the place, particulary on the black parts. Lovely yarn, but not for this project
- I ran out of yarn, and the yarn is discontinued
- I can't locate the pattern any longer
- I would never wear this now (I might have in the eighties)
So, why is it still in my closet ? I guess I just could not part with it. Maybe I could try to slighty felt it, and make a cushion cover out of it ? Only problem - the black is superwash yarn ! I just don't want to throw this away. Altough I have never finished this, I learned a lot from it. I'll keep it just as a reminder of that. Normally I am not a pack rat, so I have no idea why I am so attached to this. Maybe because it was one of my first big projects ?

Sorry, I got carried away. This was a bit longer then usual. But now it will be quiet for some time on this blog. I don't suppose I will be blogging on the trip.

Toen ik door mijn voorraadkast ging op zoek naar geschikte wol voor de workshops, vond ik dit : mijn oudste 'ufo' (unfinished object). Dit is de rug van een vestje dat ik begonnen ben ergens in de late jaren 80. Het patroon was in een Ariadne, en truien met grote intarsia inbreivlakken waren toen heel erg in. In die Ariadne was het een katoenen trui in rood en groen, dus het zag er eigenlijk heel anders uit. Dit project was een mislukking om allerlei redenen :
- de rug is langer dan de voorkant. Dit is niet zo makkelijk aan te passen, met al de inbreitekeningen. Ik snap nog niet goed hoe het kan, waarschijnlijk heb ik bij het lezen van het schema ergens een denkfout gemaakt.
- het blekere, gevlekte garen is Pingouin grège, een wol/alpaca/zijde mengeling. Heel mooi garen, maar niet voor kleur-inbreiwerk, want het pluist en verliest vezels over heel het werk. Zou erg onhanding zijn om te dragen.
- ik kwam wol tekort - dat heb je dan als je een ander garen gebruikt en zelf allerlei aanpassingen aan het patroon begint te doen. En natuurlijk in een uitverkoop gekocht, dus (toen al) niet meer verkrijgbaar.
- ik vind het patroon niet meer
- ik zou zoiets nu niet meer dragen (en denken dat ik dat wel wou twintig jaar geleden!)

Waarom heb ik dit al niet lang weggegooid ? Waarschijnlijk ben ik er op één of ander manier nog emotioneel aan gehecht. Alhoewel het een mislukking is, heb ik er heel veel uit geleerd. Misschien kan ik hier nog wel eens een mooi kussen uit recycleren ?

Sorry, dit werd wat langer dan de bedoeling was. Nu zal het even stil zijn op de blog, ik denk niet dat ik van op reis zal kunnen/willen posten. Hopelijk heb ik veel te vertellen als ik terug ben !

preparing for the cruise

I am preparing for the cruise, and more in particular, the knitting part of the cruise. The days we are at sea, we will have knitting workshops, taught by Merike Saarnit. We've received a list with materials. That seems the most important part to be packing, forget about pasports, and formal dresses - Did I bring my knitting ?

Ik ben me aan het voorbereiden voor de cruise, en meer in het bijzonder het brei-gedeelte van de reis. Tijdens de dagen op zee zullen we enkele workshops krijgen van Merike Saarnit, een Amerikaanse van Estse afkomst. We kregen een lijst met materiaal dat we moeten meebrengen. Wie ligt er wakker van paspoort en gala-kledij ? Belangrijkste vraag is : heb ik mijn breiwerk mee ?


Workshop 1 : we will be knitting some Estonian lace in linen yarn, suggestion was to bring Louets euroflax. Now, although this yarn is supposedly spun in Belgium, I cannot get it over here. I do have however some very nice linen yarn in my stash, bought in Stockholm in september 2006. It seems appropriate to bring it back where it came from, and knit something 'Scandinavian' out of it.

In workshop 1 gaan we Ests kantbreiwerk in linnen oefenen. De lesgeefster suggereerde 'Louet euroflax' als garen. Dit wordt blijkbaar in België gesponnen, maar is hier niet verkrijgbaar. 't Zou wel interessant zijn om te horen welke spinnerij dit garen produceert. Ik vond een goede vervanger in mijn voorraadkast, gekocht vorig jaar in Stockholm.

Homework : wind this into a centerpul ball. I always wind the 'canonball' style, so this was a first for me. The wonders of the internet - somebody actually put a video on you-tube where she demonstrates this !


Well, I must be thick or something, or maybe I just fall back into old habits : I ended up with a canonball again.

Huiswerk : wind dit garen in een 'hoe vertaal ik dit - bal waar je het draadje vanbinnenuit kunt gebruiken'. Ik wind mijn garen altijd in een 'kanonskogel', dus dit wist ik niet goed hoe dit aan te pakken. Maar op het internet vind je dus alles, o.a. ook een filmpje op youtube. Maar blijkbaar gaan nieuwe dingen er bij mij niet goed in, en verviel ik in oude gewoonten - resultaat : kanonskogel. Als het nu echt belangrijk is om met een ander soort bol te werken : ik neem de tweede streng linnen ook mee, maar dan nog in zijn originele staat.

Knitting cruise

As I told on a previous post, I will be taking a knitting cruise this summer, visiting the Scandinavian capitals. Iron man told me he would not have time to take a holiday with me, so I decided to go on my own, and do something that interests me. It was not the cruise thing that attracted me, but now I am getting curious to see how it works out. The dressing up part is not my kind of fun, but of course it will be great people watching.

Ik heb me eens goed laten gaan, en heb me ingeschreven voor een 'brei-cruise' deze zomer. Jan had zijn triathlonproject, en niet echt tijd om met mij op vakantie te gaan (ondertussen zijn we natuurlijk wel nr Frankrijk en Duitsland gegaan, maar dat was eerst niet voorzien, hij had andere evenementen op zijn lijstje, in België). Het concept 'cruise' spreekt me niet direct aan, zeker niet het opdirken. Aan de andere kant is het misschien wel plezant om het allemaal aan te zien.

I mailed on several lists and my blog if anybody wanted to meet up. Hanna in Helsinki offered to show me around. I am really looking forward to that. It looks like we will be able to do some serious yarn shopping. Where-ever I travel, I like to buy some local yarn. Hanna sent me several links to Finnish yarn companies. I really like these mittens by 'Pirkanmaa' yarn company '(hope I spelled that right). *edited : I seem not be able to link to the right page. Look under 'english' and 'knitting kits' and you will find some beautifull mittens ! And I also like it when people show me their favorite spots in their home town.

Hanna in Helsinki zal me rondleiden. Ze heeft me al een hele lijst van wolwinkels gestuurd, en ook URL's van wol-firma's. Ik probeer altijd iets lokaal te kopen, iets echt authentiek. Vooral de Finse wanten spreken me heel erg aan, ik hoop zo een pakket te vinden. En ik vind het ook altijd leuk als mensen me hun favoriete plekje in hun stad tonen. Hieronder mijn reisschema, dat hoef ik wel niet te vertalen.

In the meantime - Ondertussen

I finished the travelling companion socks. Yarn is merino sock yarn by nightshade rose, and it was a gift from my secretpal 9.

Een paar sokken gebreid, garen was een kadootje van geheim vriendje 9.


It is a very fine sock yarn (compared to my regular Annell sock yarn). Usually I knit a sock on 60 stitches, this time I needed 80 stitches. That's why it took some time before these socks got finished. That, and the Mystery Stole 3 of course !

Een heel fijn garen, vergeleken met mijn gewone sokkenwol. Deze keer moest ik een sok over 80 steken breien, ipv de gewone 60 steken. Daarom duurde het ook wat langer voor deze sok af was. Dat, en de mysterie stola 3 natuurlijk !

mystery stole 3 progress

This is my progress on my Mystery Stole 3 so far. For me knitting on a Mystery Stole has been a summer tradition the last 3 years. I started on the Mystery stole 1 (Leda's dream) as a novice lace knitter. Apart from a lace cuff on a sock, I was a lace virgin. So the mystery stole 1 was the most difficult. Partly because I was a beginning lace knitter, and partly because you had to combine instructions from different charts. I am sorry I cannot show you a picture of the finished object, I gave it away as a gift and have never seen it since.

De 'mysterie stola' breien is mijn zomerse breitraditie geworden de laatste jaren. Ik begon eraan als een complete leek in kunstbreiwerk, dus ik heb echt wel geworsteld met het eerste project. Ik kan er jammer genoeg geen foto van laten zien, heb deze stola weggegeven als geschenk en er daarna nooit meer iets van gehoord.

I loved MS2 because I learned a lot about 'reading my yarnovers'. It was not a repetive lace pattern that you can memorize, you really had to learn to read the chart, and read your knitting. Mysterie stola 2 heeft me heel veel geleerd. Het was geen kantpatroon dat je zomaar uit je hoofd kon leren. Je moest echt wel het breischema kunnen volgen, en ook je breiwerk kunnen interpreteren op fouten.

I would consider myself a intermediate lace knitter now. On MS3 I finished row 287 (with the lifeline) last night. Taking a look back - I noticed an error way down at the end of clue 3, you have this 2d 'inverted V'. I used a left leaning decrease instead of a right leaning decrease. Result is that the V doesn't close properly. I pointed this out to my DH, but to him it was like I was talking chinese. It's not a big error, everything is lining up properly. I am sure nobody will see it when I wear the stole. I am not discouraged, merely slightly annoyed. I am not advanced yet to ladder down (especially not on the centre stitch with all the double decreases). On top of that, I use a yarn that's doesn't like tinking, because it splits very easily (Schachenmayr Rheuma wolle). I am anxious to see what the next clue will look like, but am leaving on a (knitting) trip next thursday, and no way I will be able to donwload the file next friday. I hope to be able to do that somewhere on my trip, but not sure yet. More about the trip tomorrow !

Nu zou ik mezelf omschrijven als 'gemiddeld' in verband met kantbreien. Ik ben bij MS3 tot aan rij 287 geraakt zonder grote problemen, dacht ik toch. Ik merk nu wel dat ik een heel aantal rijen naar beneden een klein foutje heb in het breiwerk. Bij de tweede 'omgekeerde V' heb ik een links leunende mindering (overhaling ipv 2 samenbreien). Daardoor sluit de V niet helemaal. Niet echt een grote fout, maar 'echte' kantbreisters zullen het wel opmerken. Ik ben een beetje ambetant hierover, maar ga het toch niet riskeren om alles op die plaats naar beneden te ladderen. Veel te veel risico op nog meer problemen ! En bovendien is de Rheuma Wol niet echt happy met terugbreien, dan begint ze uit mekaar te rafelen, en moet je extra opletten dat je nog alle draadjes terug opneemt. Mijn stola is dus niet perfect, maar ik kan ermee leven. Ik ben benieuwd wat Melanie (de moderator van de MS3) nog voor ons in petto heeft. Ik vertrek op een 'brei-reis' volgende week donderdag, 1 dag voor de nieuwe tip uitkomt. Waarschijnlijk zal ik op reis niet in de mogelijkheid zijn om de tip te downloaden (ik zit op een boot dan). Ik schrijf wat meer over mijn reis morgen op de blog !

Germany - sheep country

When we arrived in our hotel in Germany this was the first thing I saw in the hotel lobby - my initial thought was that this hotel had an early x-mas celebration going on.

In ons hotel in Duitsland was dit het eerste wat ik zag - ik dacht dat ze hier al vroeg aan kerstmis begonnen waren ...


and then there were these little guys on the window sill ...

You could not take a seat without sitting on them - they were everywhere !

Zelfs even zitten in de hal kon niet - de schapen hebben hier de macht overgenomen !

Turn out this region in Germany (Niedersachsen) was sheep 'infested', so to speak. We were in the southern part of Niedersachsen, in a small town called Bodenteich.
In that region you have a lot of heath (moorland), and flocks of sheep. They have their own breed of sheep - the 'heidschnucken'. It's a sheep that descends from the Corsican mouflon sheep.

In deze streek van Duitsland (Nedersaksen) zijn grote heidegebieden waar kuddes grazen. Er is een schapenras dat typisch is voor de streek, nl. de 'heidschnucken'. Prachtige beesten met lange vachten, en grote gekrulde horens, verwant met de Corsicaanse moeflon (een wild schaap). Ik heb ook gelezen dat deze schapen erg belangrijk zijn voor het instandhouden van het ecosysteem van de heidevlakte, maar nu lijkt het vooral toeristisch uitgebuit. Echt overal namaakschapen in het hotel, tot in onze slaapkamer toe !

In een weitje achter het hotel waren zelfs enkele levende exemplaren aan het grazen. 's Morgens werd je dan wakker met schapengeblaat op de achtergrond. Dat is eens iets anders dan het gekoer van duiven in mijn tuin ...

Of course I was curious if I could find yarn of this type of sheep. Didn't find any, probably because the wool of the 'heidschnucken' is very coarse. I bought some other German yarn - 'albwolle' in natural cream color. In the shop where I bought the yarn, they had one fleece of heidschnucken. I am not a spinner, but I noticed it had 2 layers - a finer undercoat, and very coarse outer layer. The 'albwolle' was also spun in Niedersachsen, but the wool came from a more southern part of Germany (schwäbische alp). Maybe there are local spinners around, but I didn't have the time to go exploring - I was there to support the Iron man. And I had 'roast of heidschnucken' for supper !

Natuurlijk was ik benieuwd of je van dit schapenras ook wol kon kopen. Heidschnucken blijken nogal stugge wol te leveren, meer iets voor tapijten dan om te breien. In een plaatselijk souvenirwinkeltje was er wel deze witte 'albwolle', gesponnen in Nedersaksen, maar van een schapenras in Zuid-Duitsland. Ik kon daar wel even een schapenvacht van de heidschnucken aaien - een tweelagige (en tweekleurige) vacht - een stugge, grijze bovenlaag, en fijn donkergrijze onderlaag. Zag er een beetje wolf-achtig uit ! Ik heb niet veel verder kunnen gaan zoeken naar lokale spinners, ik was daar om Iron Man Jan te ondersteunen. Ik heb dan maar heidschnuckengebraad gegeten als avondeten !

That's it. My husband has swam, biked and ran enough to start his triatlon. He choose an event in Germany, this weekend. I will accompany him for moral support, everything else he has to do on his own.
Knittingwise, I am stalled on the mystery stole project. That's good news actually, I have found a way to read and follow the chart easily. This means when a clue comes out, I can finish it in the next 2 days. I don't know if I will have internet access where we are going, so I am looking to take a small, but interesting project.


Jane in Texas was so kind to send me 2 balls of Noro silk garden lite, and I found the perfect project for it :) - the Argosy scarf.
Don't you love these fresh, springy colors ? Looks like a very versatile pattern, that can grow into a wrap or even a blanket. I'll stick to the scarf version.

back from France

We are back from a short stay in France. We started out in a chateau in the Loire region, but because of the cloudy/rainy weather, and because my husband needed some good roads to practice his biking/running we went to the seaside.

We ended up in a little seaside resort at the atlantic ocean, called Pornic. I managed to go to the Phildar shop in Angers and got some Phil'bambou to knit a baby sweater, but that was about it regarding yarn purchases. I didn't make it into Nantes, so no La Droguerie visit. In Pornic there was also a Bergère de France shop, but I have one in my home town, so why buy that abroad ? I enjoyed the views, and knitted the same 3 rows on my Mystery stole again and again.
I discovered what's not to like about the Rheuma yarn - it splits terribly when you have to unknit !

When I got home, I found the final package from my SP10. Yarn, tea, chocolate, a magazine and stitch markers. Thanks a lot Karin ! The yarn is a very nice blend : 30% alpaca, 65% merino, and 5% PA (that's what she writes on the card). Anybody knows what PA stands for ? It's a nice cream color, with black hairs sticking out. I'll just have to find a nice project for it. Maybe another MS3 ? I just want to find out how this one is turning out, before I decide.

I am home for a few days now, and then we leave for Germany, where my husband hopefully will be able to finish his triathlon project.

I will be in France for the next week or so (not sure yet when we will come back). We are heading for the Loire region (near Angers). Of course I checked stash enhancement possibilities on my trip. Phildar is everywhere in France. They have this cool tool on their website, that makes you select a yarn, and look up what patterns are knitted in that yarn. Because of my shoulder problems, I don't want to start a big project right now. But a cute baby sweater in phil'bambou (bamboo yarn) or phil'thalassa (cotton+seacell) might be nice. Lots of phildar yarns are blends, but these are both 100% natural ... I swatched the bamboo (got a ball on my previous trip to France). It's very soft, but rather heavy. I think you need a flowey, drapy kind of garment, or knit it on tiny needle. The Phil'thalassa felt very nice, but I didn't swatch it - sent it to the USA in a swap. It comes in variegated colors, and might make nice facecloths.

And I just found out that La Droguerie has a shop in Nantes, only 70kms from where we will be in France. I don't know if I can persuade DH to drive 70kms just to visit a yarn shop. I hope I can find something about Nantes that makes it a worthwile detour !


I haven't managed to finish the mystery stole clue 1 before I leave. I am on row 78 now (out of 99). I don't know if this is a good project to take on holiday, you need to stay focused. I guess I will just take some socks as a knitting project with me.

Mystery stole started

Last Tuesday, I went to Utrecht with a friend. I had bought several beads in Leuven, but either those were too big, or too small. In Utrecht I found just the right size of beads (although it was completely guesswork from my side, the lady in the shop had no idea). On the bottom, you see the Leuven beads. They look (and feel) very heavy. The Utrecht beads are on top - look just like dewdrops on the fabric, don't you think ? I have to be very carefull with the crochet hook to NOT split the yarn. It feels awkward, but I hope that will change.

Eindelijk heb ik de juiste kralen gevonden voor mijn verrassingsstola, en in Utrecht dan nog wel. Je ziet ze op het bovenste patroon van mijn proeflapje. Ik vind dat deze een effect van dauwdruppeltjes geven, heel subtiel. De onderste kralen zijn veel te lomp. In Utrecht heb ik de kralen gekocht in een winkeltje vol met 'do-it-yourself'' juwelenpakketjes. Dit was één van de fijnste kralen die ze daar hadden, voor de rest veel mega-grote houten en aardewerk kralen. Leuk, maar ik ga niet aan nog een hobby beginnen.



First clue of the mystery stole 3 is up on the yahoogroup. These are the first 25 rows. It looks like this stole is knitted on the diagonal, with very subtle beading. I love it !

Mystery stole 3 countdown

The mystery stole knit-along starts Friday june 29th (my daughters birthday!), and I have been knitting smaller objects to keep my hands busy. Well, not too much really, my shoulder has been acting up. It seems that all my joints and tendons take a turn in feeling achy. My guess : old age and the weather. I had a pair of socks that came out short, cut the toe, frogged what I had, used the left-overs to knit the foot longer, and used another solid yarn to knit a new toe. The yarn used in the original sock was a tad heavier then sock yarn, so I used sock yarn doubled for the toe.

De verrassingsstola meebrei-groep start vrijdag 29 juni. Ondertussen heb ik me wat bezig gehouden met oude sokken een nieuw leven te geven. Veel breien kon ik niet, want mijn schouder gaf problemen. Het lijkt wel of alle gewrichten en pezen om beurt eens overbelast geraken (nu is mijn knie aan de beurt, maar dat geeft geen probleem met breien gelukkig).




In the meanwhile I received some sock yarn from my SP10. A very nice green/blue/brown color, from a distance a nice teal. I don't know who she is yet, but she told me she is also on the MS3 list, and she will be sending something that I can use for that project ! Maybe I should wait till that package arrives, before deciding on which yarn to use ?

Ook nog een pakje in de post van geheim vriendje10. Geen idee wie ze is (behalve dat ze in Duitsland woont), maar ze gaat me ook nog wat voor de verrassingsstola sturen. Ik ben erg nieuwsgierig om dat pakje te zien !

And another swap : the no-sheep-one-skein-swap. I received this furry acrylic from Laura in France. I am not into this kind of yarn, but I do like the colors !

Ik doe ook nog mee aan de absoluut-geen-wol-bolletjesruil. Ik kreeg dit bolletje acrylic in de brievenbus. Niet echt mijn ding qua garen, maar wel leuke kleuren. Zal waarschijnlijk als cadeau-inpaklint gebruikt worden

Yesterday I went yarn shopping with a Finnish and an American knitter in my home town, Leuven, Belgium. I found Heli from Finland through SP10. I was surfing through the list of participants, and I read on her blog she would be visiting Belgium. So, I proposed to show her around. And Cheryl, contacted me. She found me through Google. (I tried it, when you enter 'yarn stores Brussels' you will find a comment I made on Polly's blog ). I love yarn shopping with fellow fiber addicts !

I live in Leuven, a city of about 100.000 inhabitants. It's 23 minutes by train from Brussels (direction Liège-Luik).

First we hit 'hexagoon', not a yarn shop, but a shop filled with beads, buttons, ribbons, cards and other craft supplies. I was looking to shop for beads for my MS3. Hexagoon is a tiny shop in a backyard street, if you don't know it, you won't stumble upon it. Apparently, lots of people knowabout it, it's always busy. I love it that they really take the time for you, help you find that single button that really finishes of your knit project. But, that also means they take the time for other people, and sometimes you have to wait. Sorry, no pictures, forget to take one !

Then we hit the Bergère de France shop. Their yarns are mostly blends, and not very expensive. They carry BdF, and some novelty yarns by On-line. I love it that they have a (free) catalogue with yarn samples . The new catalogue has arrived, and there are some interesting new yarns (I noticed a wool /alpaca blend, and an organic cotton). Cheryl bought some On-line ladder yarn to 'weave' a necklace, something that the LYSO was demonstrating to her. Heli bought the wool/alpaca to knit some gloves (it can get very cold in Finland!). And I was happy to find the tiniest crochet hook for my mystery stole3, and bought the new pattern book.

We walked into another craft shop, where I bought some more beads. In retrospect, these are too small. I wasn't allowed to take them out the container to try with my new crochet hook.

We walked into Veritas, a shop that is part of a chain - they carry a limited yarn selection of Italian yarns (Adriafil), and sock yarns. Their selection changes with the season, they don't have much wool on offer now, it's all about summer yarns. And they have a lot of haberdashery, and lingerie. They had beads, and for the first time I found some indication of size (I am new to beads).

It was time for some coffee now - we had one in the reading café of the public library. There was a book sale going on, and on each table there was a book. On our table the book title was 'wayward women and wicked ladies' ....

After admiring the 500 year old city hall, we went to my favorite yarn shop : 't Wolwinkeltje. They carry everything, from very affordable to very luxurious fibers. Brands are : Scheepjeswol, Anny Blatt, Schachenmayer, Lang, Katia, Lana Grossa, Gedifra, Grignasco, Noro, Rowan ... I love their collection of sock yarns. There are always some sale bins outside. For cross stitch or patchwork crafters, they also have a nice selection. It's a small shop, but it's crammed with good stuff.

For the first time somebody knew what I meant by 'size 8 beads'. So I bought some more . Fortunately, you can get a lot of beads for not much money. And I bought some more yarn to finish of my Lizard ridge afghan. Heli bought sock yarn, and Cheryl found the right size circulars for her felted bag.

mystery stole 3 - swatches

I have swatched with 2 yarns for my Mystery Stole. The instructions state you need 1200yards of lace weight yarn. Now, lace weight is very hard to get here locallly. So, whenever I have the opportunity abroad, I buy some lace weight yarn as a souvenir. I bought this red Ostergotland lace weight yarn in Stockholm, september 2006. Only one hank though, just 600 yards. But, I will be in Stockholm again this summer. Can I take the risk, will it still be available ? I swatched, because I loved it so much in the skein. Guess what ? I don't like knitting with it, not for lace anyway. It's a bit scratchy (feels like a bad mohair/shetland combination). It softens alot when washed, but it also fluffes up, and the hairy nature makes the lace difficult to read. On top of that, it has a limited stretch factor.



The other yarn (rheuma wolle) is a 100% superwash. I bought it in my local yarn store, so there is plenty available. It glides over my needles, and blocks beautifully. What's not to like ? (besides the name ?). And the instructions state that a white or natural is the most suitable for this stole(or black, but I won't go that road).
Now to find some beads ! I go shopping with a Finnish and an American knitter today. Both are visiting Belgium, and I offered to show them around.

mystery stole 3

I have joined the Mystery Stole 3 knitalong ! I am so excited - selected a nice yarn to knit it 'Thermal Rheuma wolle' in cream. My local yarn store has absolutely no lace yarn, and this was the only thing that qualified. It is used to knit thermal underwear, but really is a nice yarn. The only thing that worries me slightly is that this Mystery Stole will involve bead knitting. The knitalong will start at the end of June, so this will be a nice summer project.

In the meantime I started a pair of socks, with some yarn from my secret pal 9. The pattern was a gift from Jane in Texas, and is called 'travelling companion', by Mary Dominski, a nice combination of broken rib and cables. This sock yarn is really superfine, so I am knitting it on 2mm bamboo needles. The picture is a bit darker then in real life, the yarn is a semisolid of hues of dark burgundy.

Unfinished objects : the lizard ridge afghan, and Hanne Falkenberg's 'Ballerina'. Both will probably get finished eventually, but most likely after summer.

more socks - but these are mine !

In between the mindless sock knitting for DS, I knitted some socks for me. The pattern is 'Roza's Socks', by Grumperina.
The pattern was in Interweave knits, spring 2007 issue. They were an easy knit, once you get the pattern in your head, and are used to the different manoeuvres of creating yarn-overs and knitting those togehter with other stitches. I am not good at explaining this, the patern does a better job at that ! These were knitted in Cherry tree hill supersock merino, color 'African Grey'.
It's the first time I knit socks in a 100% wool yarn. It has a tigth twist, so I hope they will hold up well. They sure feel very nice on my feet !


I also started the 'spiral boot socks' (IK summer 2007 issue), and I had a problem in the beginning. First you start by knitting a lace cuff. That went ok. Then you need to start the spiral pattern The pattern tells you to keep the same stitch count on each needle, and knit whole pattern repeats on a needle. But, the stitch total is 80 stitches, and the pattern repeat is 7 stitches. The stitches are divided as follows : 16 stitches on ndl 1 and 3, 24 stitches on ndl 2 and 4. The stitch pattern consist of 3 different patterns - a calf pattern, a leg pattern, and an ankle pattern, each divided by a decrease round. What happened was that I knitted the lace cuff, and then started the leg pattern.
To me, the lay-out of the pattern in the magazine was a bit confusing. I started with the charted cuff pattern on p 117, and then went back to the stitch guide on p116. My mind must have decided that I could skip the upper part of that stitch guide, because I had already done 'the first part'. Bad assumption !
I was really struck on the pattern, and could not figure out what went wrong. Luckily, there is a yahoogroup (the knitlist), where I could ask the question. Lori Gayle, a designer that regularly published in IK, helped me out. Thanks again Lori, the socks are on their way now. Yarn used : 'Annel extra' again, this time in a slightly heathered silver grey.
