Herbst

Ergens in september breide ik het eerste proeflapje voor Herbst, een mysterie samenbrei-trui ontworpen door Vera Sanon. Ik heb dit jaar al 2 van haar ontwerpen gebreid, telkens met goed resultaat, dus ik keek erg uit naar dit project. In deze trui wordt een zogezegde Franse schouder gebreid, die lichtjes naar achter op de schouder valt. Een mooi begin.

Late September I have knit the first swatch for Herbst, a cardigan mystery knitalong by Vera Sanon. I have knit 2 of her designs already this year, both very succesfull, so I was really looking forward to this cardigan, especially the way the shoulder is constructed… After knitting the first clue, I am totally in love with this construction.

Ik brei deze met Wollmeise DK in de kleur Oohm. Wollmeise is een handgeverfd garen, en omdat mijn 3 strengen lichtjes verschillen, deed ik de tailleband met de grijzere streng, en breide ik daarna voort met afwisselend twee rijen met de 'grijze' streng en de 'blauwe' streng.
I am knitting with Wollmeise DK in the color Oohm, a handdyed yarn. I had 3 skeins of the yarn, one that is slightly grayer then the other 2. So I switched to that one for the slipstitch  waistband. After the slipstitch waist I started to knit 2 rows of the new yarn, and 2 rows of the old yarn, to blend the colors.

 

Dit is de trui zoals gebreid door een andere deelneemster. Maar omdat het een mysterie was hadden we nog geen zicht op het eindresultaat. En aangezien ik niet echt standaardmaten heb, en maar drie strengen van deze wol, veranderde ik nogal wat.
This is the jacket as knit by another participant. As I don't have a standard size, and I only had 3 hanks of yarn I decided to tweak the pattern. 

Ik deed de tailleband lager en minder breed dan in het patroon. Lager omdat die anders over mijn borsten zou lopen. En minder breed, omdat ik een minder lang vestje wou met mijn beschikbare garen. Dus uiteindelijk ziet mijn vestje er heel anders uit.
I started the slipstitch waist 11cm after the armhole, otherwise the ‘waist’ would have been over my breasts. I did not do the slipstitch on the front, only the Estonian braid. As I am short, I  only did half the lenght of the slipstitch waist (20 rows instead of 40). I wanted this to be a shorter, more cropped jacket. So my jacket looks a lot different then in the pattern.

Ik vond die asymetrische overlappende sluiting niet zo mooi, dus ik deed ook de voorpanden minder breed dan in het patroon. Na alles op een draadje rijgen om aan te passen was ik ervan overtuigd dat de pasvorm goed was. Nu alleen nog een koordje aanbreien voor de afwerking. En beslissen of ik wel of niet knopen eraan wil...
I did not like the asymmetric overlapping front bands, so I knit those less wide then in the pattern. After putting everything on some cotton string, and trying it on, I was convinced that the fit was good. It just needed an I-cord finish. And I needed to decide wether I wanted buttons or not.

En daar ging het fout, zie ik nu ik naar de eindfoto's kijk. Het vest trekt scheef naar boven, waarschijnlijk omdat het koordje te strak gebreid is. En die knoopsgaten in het koordje zitten ook schots en scheef. Dus, in plaats van een afgewerkt vest heb ik nog een reparatie-opdracht, koordje uithalen, voorkanten breder breien.... Maar dat zal iets voor de kerstvakantie zijn, ik kan me nu niet meer opladen om dit opnieuw te doen.
Well, I thought my sweater came out pretty good. It just rides up a bit on the front (probably due to too tight i-cord). I thought that I could live with it, but now that my husband took pictures I am convinced that I need to rework that part. I am just not in the mood to start right now…This will be my Christmas holiday knitting....

Voor het ogenblik ben ik vooral druk bezig met allerlei technieken uitproberen voor het betere breiwerk. We krijgen zelfs huiswerk!
But for now, I am busy knitting my home assignement for the advanced knitting course I am taking!

the Doodler

De laatste weken is al mijn brei-tijd naar de mystery shawl van Stephen West gegaan, met de intriguerende naam The Doodler.

The last weeks all my knitting time went into the Stephen West mystery shawl, the Doodler.

Met zo'n mysteryproject  weet je eigenlijk niet waar je aan begint. Je krijgt alleen algemene aanwijzingen over hoeveelheid garen en kleuren. Dus: zoveel meter, met goed contrast voor kleur A en B, en dan nog een afstekende kleur C voorzien. Poging 1: begin niet aan een nieuw breiproject als je 300km gereden hebt en daarna 2 glazen wijn drinkt. Resultaat: je leest het patroon verkeerd, en mag opnieuw beginnen.
With a mystery project, you get general directions: choose color A and B with good contrast, and select a surprising color C for later on. My first try was not succesfull. A tip: don’t start a new knitting project after driving for 300km and drinking 2 glasses of wine…

Poging 2: na de andere beginnetjes te zien in de Ravelry groep zag ik een paar mooie projecten in een gradueel kleurverloop. Zoiets had ik ook nog in de kast liggen. Maar ik maakte weer een fout, dus dit werd ook uitgetrokken.
Second try/ I’ll have to restart anyway. The more projects I see, the better I like the gradient ones. I also have a gradient in stash, but I manage to make a mistake, again. So this is ripped out.

Poging 3: ik bedenk dat ik een omslagdoek in effen, bij elkaar passende kleuren, meer zal dragen dan iets wild en exotisch. Ik zie een paar heel exuberante projecten passeren in de Ravelry groep. Paars- en grijstinten, helemaal mijn ding. Misschien gestreept gebruiken? Staat niet in de aanwijzingen, maar waarom niet?

third try: I realise that I would not wear a very wild and exuberant shawl. I have some Knitpicks Palette  lying around in gray and purples…Why not make a striped shawl? It's not in the clues, I don't know if it will work, but am trying it anyway.

 

In deel 2 van de omslagdoek komt er een dikke kabel in ribbelsteek aan de bovenkant. Sommigen in de groep zijn er niet zo'n fan van. Ik vind het wel iets hebben.

clue2 brings a big fat garterstitch cable. Which I quite like, actually. I think it works really well with my striped shawl.

 

Deel 3: vanuit de koordjesrand steken opnemen voor een golvende 'feather and fan'- boord. De omslagdoek ziet er nu steeds barokker uit. 

Clue3 is: adding a feather&fan border. The shawl is becoming more and more ‘baroque’-looking. 

En dit is het eindresultaat. Aan de bovenrand is die 124cm. Voor mij een beetje te klein om echt rond te wikkelen.Ik had gehoopt dat de sjaal breder zou worden met wassen en uitspelden, maar de koordjesafwerking is niet echt rekbaar.

I was hoping the shawl would block to a good size, but the I-cord prevents it from really stretching much. I have a 124cm wingspan finished shawl, which is really too small for me. 

Ik ben wel heel blij met mijn kleurenkeuze. Het was een interessant project om te breien waar ik veel uit geleerd heb. Dat het eindresultaat niet helemaal mijn ding is, dat is zo'n risico dat je neemt bij een mystery. Ik heb al een kandidaat die deze wel ziet zitten, het wordt dus een mooi kerstcadeau.
I am very happy with my colors. This was an interesting project to knit, from which I have learned a lot. I have found somebody who really likes my finished project, so this will make a nice Christmas gift.

Mouw - Sleeve

Rode Hond kinderkunstenfestival, en de ijzerenman mag optreden. Zacht weer in de herfstvakantie, en de mouwen mochten thuisblijven!
My Iron Man performed with his accordeon marching band, and because the weather was so mild, he could leave his sleeves at home.

Ik breide nog wat verder aan de mouw van mijn trui, en keek naar de voorstelling 'Mouw'. Muziek met alpenhoorn en ud, een interessante combinatie... Je kan een filmpje van deze schattige voorstelling zien op de website van theater de Spiegel. 
I continued knitting on the sleeves of my sweater, and watched 'sleeve', a dance theatre performance, musical support by Alpenhorn and Ud. You can watch a video trailer of this sweet dance performance for children here.

Al mijn overmoedige breiplannen voor november zijn opgeslokt door dit monsterproject. Voorlopig is het nog een mysterie, en ik weet nog altijd niet of ik het wel mooi vind worden... maar spannend is het wel. De geplande sokken, muts, en de trui in wording... ik heb er geen tijd voor. De rijen worden langer en langer, we eindigen met meer dan 600 steken. Help! Minder tijd om te breien ook omdat er zoveel andere dingen moeten. Zoals de zoon verhuizen.
All my ambitious knitting plans for November are swallowed up by this huge project. It's still a mystery knitalong, and I am still not sure wether I like it ... but it's a fascinating knit. The socks, hat, and my sweater in progress are all languishing in the corner. I don't have the time to knit on them. The rows on this shawl are getting longer and longer. We will end with more then 600 stitches on the needles. Help! 
I also have less time for knitting, because there are other things that need to be done, such as helping our son to move from one place to another.

Of minder tijd om te breien omdat zoveel andere dingen boeiend, interessant en meeslepend zijn. Ik heb een riolenwandeling gedaan, een brouwerij bezocht, naar drie films en  vijf theatervoorstellingen gaan zien. Coup fatal is een absolute aanrader, en ze komen in maart nog eens terug naar de KVS!
Less time for knitting also, because there are lots of other things to see and attend, that are as interesting as knitting on my projects. I saw three movies, and went to five theatre shows. Coup fatal is a dance concert, where Congolese musicians interact with classical music. Very invigorating!

Op-Art socks - Günter

We naderen het einde van het boek. Het volgende patroon is vernoemd naar Günter Fruhtrunk. In zijn werk speelde hij veel met sterke grafische lijnen, rasters, schaakbordpatronen...vaak schuin, wat een dynamische, minder statisch effect geeft. In het sokkenpatroon zijn de schuine lijnen gevormd door meerderen en minderen in een 3 rechts, 3 averechts patroon. Het patroon is gespiegeld over de linker- en de rechtersok.
We are approaching the end of the Op-Art book. Modified grids, chessboards, or figures filled with alternating black and white lines are often used for spatial sensation in op art. Tilted lines and grids are as effective as rectangular ones. Günter Fruhtrunk (1923–1982) used this effect for some of his works in the 1960s. For this sock pattern, a striped yarn in a simple k3, p1 rib pattern that’s truncated with decreases and increases  forms a strong diagonal pattern. The direction is reversed on the right and left socks.

 

En dit is mijn versie. Ik koos voor een effen garen, omdat ik dacht dat zo het diagonale patroon beter te zien zou zijn. Ik apprecieer de poging van de ontwerpster om een optisch kunstwerk in een sok te vertalen, maar eerlijk gezegd vind ik dit niet zo geslaagd. De sokken passen wel, maar ze draaien rond mijn been en zakken af als ik ze aanheb... Maar ik denk dat patroon heel mooi in een sjaal zou werken.
This is my version. I choose a solid yarn, hoping to see the diagonal pattern more clearly. I do appreciate the designers effort to translate art into sockpatterns, but in this case it's not really a succes. Although they fit, the socks tend to swirl around my leg when I wear them. I think this would make a lovely scarf pattern though!

De laatste Op-Art sok is ook al gebreid, maar dat is voor een volgend blogje. Ondertussen heb ik alles klaargelegd voor de themamaand 'blauw' van de solidsocks groep. Er komt een mysterie samenbreisok, met het thema kabels, van de teen af gebreid. Het patroon is geschikt voor mannen. Ik heb dat gevraagd aan de ontwerpster, want de zoon heeft nog altijd sokken nodig. Een gratis patroon, dus wie zin heeft om mee te breien?
Ook in de sockknittersanonymous is er een gratis samenbreisok, jedi mind tricks.  De dochter houdt van scifi, en dat blauw garen rechts is Tardis blue. Klinkt perfect.
En voor wie liever een samenbreisok in het Nederlands breit, die is er ook, gebaseerd op een ontwerp van een Nederlandse visserstrui. Dat grijsblauwe garen links zou daar heel goed bij passen.
I finished the last Op-Art sock, will blog about it in a next blogpost. In the meantime I am selecting my yarns for Blue month in the solid socks group. The November mysterysock looks interesting, toe-up, cables, and it's 'guy-friendly' (I asked the designer).  The mystery sock in the sockknittersanonymous group also sounds promising.
And there is even a mysterysock in Dutch, based on patterns on old Fishermen's sweaters. Sounds guy-friendly also. I think my grayblue yarn on the left would work nicely for this one.

Maar misschien moet ik me eerst nog wat op mijn trui concentreren?

Maybe I should first try to finish my sweater?   

De herfst is in het land en het breiseizoen is volle kracht begonnen. En november is echt de maand van de mysteriesamenbreiprojecten. Ook Woolly Wormhead heeft een muts ontworpen die je in schijfjes opgediend krijgt. Ik heb heel erg genoten van haar vorige patronen, en ik heb deze mooie alapaca in Nieuw-Zeeland gekocht. Een muts is niet zo'n groot project, zou ik?

The knitting season is in full swing. And November seems to be the month for Mystery Knitalongs. Woolly Wormhead is also starting a hat knitalong. I have always enjoyed her patterns, and I have this nice alpaca in stash, bought in New-Zealand. A hat is not really a big project, isn't it?

Ook Stephen West start met een samenbrei-omslagdoek. Ik ga het nog een beetje afwachten. Sommige van zijn patronen vind ik heel mooi, bij andere stel ik me toch vragen. Maar ik heb alvast wat in mijn kast gerommeld, en deze kleuren eruit gehaald. Het is eens iets anders dan al het blauw en grijs van al die andere projecten. Ik wacht de eerste fotootjes af, en beslis dan of ik meedoe. 

Een trui, drie paar sokken, een muts en een omslagdoek is misschien een beetje overmoedig ...

Stephen West is also starting a mystery knitalong, it's going to be a colorfull shawl.

I am sitting on my hands until I see the first clue, but I could not help selecting some yarn possibilities... it will make a change in all the blue and gray projects I seem to be knitting lately.
On the other hand: one sweater, 3 pairs of socks, a hat and a shawl is maybe a bit too much...

Op-Art socks - Symmetry

Nog een inhaalblogje over Op-Art sokken. Dit is misschien wel mijn favoriete paar geworden uit het boek, Symmetry. Smalle streepjes met een zelfstrepend garen en afgehaalde steken in een effen garen zorgen voor een mozaiek-effect. Bovendien is dan nog de linker- en rechtersok gespiegeld.
 Another catch-up blog about Op-Art socks. This might be my favorite pair from the book, Symmetry. In the socks shown here, narrow stripes of a variegated yarn are traversed by stripes in a darker color. This project is simple and can be easily worked by beginners. For added visual play, the right and left socks are mirror images.

Ik wil deze voor de zoon breien. Ga ik voor groen en roest, of toch maar weer voor blauw en grijs? En is dat turquoise dan niet té?

I want to knit another pair for Dear Son. Green and rust? Or blue and gray? And is that turquoise not too girly?

 Eerste poging links met zelfstrepend grijsblauw Opal en effen turquoise LanaGrossa valt te klein uit. Die afgehaalde steken trekken erg in.  Bij de tweede poging met meer steken gebruik ik effen grijs voor de manchet, dat tempert het felle turquoise een beetje. En ik doe ze een beetje korter op het been dan in het boek. Als de zoon ze niet goed vindt kan ik ze ook nog voor mezelf houden.
I started the women’s size with the bluegrey Opal selfstriping yarn and Turquoise Lanagrossa. I like the colors together, not sure if DS will. But they came out too small, so I restarted in the men’s size. This time I used a solid grey for the cuff. Looks better, the grey tones down the turquoise and the size will be right too. As DS likes short cuffs on his socks, I only did 2 repeats of the chart. And if DS does not like these, I am going to keep them for myself.

 Ik heb beslist dat ze té fel zijn voor de zoon, ik mag ze voor mezelf houden. Het is ook helemaal mijn kleurenschema.
I decided they are too bright for DS, so I am keeping these for myself. Totally my colors…

Maar de dochter vond ze ook leuk, dus de sokken hebben een nieuwe thuis gevonden.
But DD liked these too, so the socks moved out of the house.

 

 Ik zal dan maar een beetje aan mijn turqoise trui verderbreien, in Wollmeise, kleur Oohm. Een heel interessante top-down constructie, ben benieuwd naar het eindresultaat, maar dat zal nog even duren...
I'd better knit some more on my turquoise sweater (Wollmeise, color Oohm). I really like how this topdown shoulder is constructed, but I still have some more knitting to do before it is finished! 

Gisteren op de Belgische Ravelry meeting heb ik er een beetje aan gebreid, maar er was te veel (plezante) afleiding om echt vooruitgang te boeken...De breimadammen verzamelden wol voor het goede doel, bijpraten met de Gentse breigroep, en er waren ook veel andere interessante projecten om te bewonderen. Het breien zal voor thuis zijn. Ik was weer teveel aan het babbelen om eraan te denken een foto te nemen. Gelukkig deed Pauli dit wel, en mocht ik één van haar foto's gebruiken!
Yesterday we gathered with Belgian Ravelry members. It was a fun meeting with a lot of chatter, and a little bit less of knitting from my part. Too busy exchanging yarn and admiring other projects! So I forgot to take pictures, thankfully Pauli did, and I could use her photo!

Kinderkopjes - Baby heads and hats

Collega Inez is mama geworden van een tweeling, Wout en Tjeu. Nu het koud wordt kunnen de babyhoofdjes een mutsje gebruiken. Wout en Tjeu hebben ook twee oudere broertjes, dus ik vroeg aan Inez of ze iets voor de kleintjes wou, of liever voor de kleuters.
My collegue has got twins, and those baby heads need covering. The twins also have two older brothers, so maybe those boys could use a hat too?

Ik breide een babymutsje. Na aanpassen bleek het rondom wel te passen, maar niet lang genoeg. Het kwam niet over de oortjes, dus niet echt praktisch in de ochtendkou.
I have knit a baby sample hat, and asked her to try it on the twins.  It was wide enough to fit, but not long enough to go over the ears. So it was more a skullcap thingie, not really practical for fighting the cold in the morning.

Ik zette er de schaar in, haalde een stukje uit en breide het mutsje iets langer. Nu is het een 'slouchie beanie' geworden die nog een tijdje meekan. Het garen is een wol/zijde/alpaca mengeling, zacht en warm. En Tjeu is er heel blij mee. Zijn broertje Wout is blijkbaar geen mutsenman, die trekt een muts direct van zijn hoofdje. Dus voor Wout moeten er nog sokken gebreid worden.
I cut of the top end and knit it a bit longer. Now it's a slouchie beanie that will be in use for some time. Yarn is a wool/silk/alpaca blend, nice and warm. And Tjeu is very happy with his hat. His brother Wout apparently does not like hats. He keeps pulling a hat of his head. So for Wout I'll have to knit a pair of socks.

Ik breide ook een kleutermuts. Patroontjes van Woolly Wormhead zijn altijd interessant. Deze muts begint met een gebreid koordje, en is van boven naar beneden gebreid. Het garen is iets zwaarder, een zachte merino, aangenaam om te breien.
I have also knit a toddler hat. Woolly wormheads hat patterns are always interesting. This one starts with a icord and is worked topdown. The yarn I used was a gift, and feels great to work with. It’s Three Irish Girls worsted in the color Macbeth.

Dré houdt wel van mutsen. Een praktisch patroontje met de oorflappen, daar gaat hij deze winter veel plezier van hebben! Het patroon is Alfur.http://www.woollywormhead.com/alfur/

En omdat ik toch in mutsenbreistemming was, nog een tweede muts in hetzelfde garen, maar deze keer begin je met de oorflappen. Het patroon is Selkie, ook van Woolly Wormhead.  Ook de ijzerenman heeft collega's heeft met kleintjes op komst, dit mutsje zal niet lang in de kast blijven liggen.
I was in a hat knitting mood, so I have knit a second toddler hat in one go with Alfur. This one is knit bottom-up. Pattern is Selkie, also by Woolly Wormhead. And there are more babies on their way, so I won't keep this hat long in my gift stash.

En voor mezelf ben ik weer een trui begonnen met een interessante schouderconstructie. Mijn vierde trui dit jaar!
And I have started another sweater for me with an interesting shoulder construction. My fourth sweater this year!

Op-Art socks - Starlet

Ik zie dat het al van maart geleden is dat ik laatst over de Op-Art sokken heb geblogd, maar ik heb nog ijverig verdergebreid. Hier is een volgend patroontje uit het boek, Starlet. Als je goed kijkt zie je kleine sterretjes en vierkantjes, die herhaald worden in averechts en rijstpapsteek. Het effect is wel heel subtiel, moet ik toegeven.
It's been a while since I last blogged about Op-Art socks, but I have been busy knitting them!
For this sock pattern, Stephanie Vanderlinden choose a tessellation of stars and small squares worked in different stitch patterns. I must admit that he optical effect is very subtle. 

En dit zijn dan mijn sokken, gebreid in Estse wol, Any sokilong, in een mooi kersenrood. Ik heb dit garen in een ruil gekregen. Het voelt nogal ruw aan, 'echte' wol, met een beetje nylon. Ik vraag me af hoe het zich gaat gedragen in sokken. Ik heb de indruk dat het snel kan vervilten.
I have knit the socks in Estonian wool, Any sokilong, in a cherry red. I received this yarn in a swap. It’s a bit rough, feels like ‘natural’ wool that will felt soon. I wonder how it will hold up in socks. 

De wreefminderingen zitten onder op de voetzool. Zo sluiten de sokken heel goed aan, de pasvorm is fantastisch.
The gusset decreases are at the bottom of the sole. These socks fit really nice and snugly.

Gemengde gevoelens over het eindresultaat. Eigenlijk was dit een heel gemakkelijke sok, maar je ziet het patroontje haast niet. Het garen is een beetje zachter na één keer wassen, maar niet echt veel. Het beste vind ik de pasvorm, die minderingen op de zool onthou ik voor een volgende keer.

Finished! This was a nice easy knit, but even after washing and blocking the effect of the stars is very subtle… The yarn became slightly softer after washing but not much. The best part of the pattern is the fit, I want to experiment a bit more with decreases on the sole.

Vijf tinten grijs - Five shades of Grey

De laatste twee weken ben ik helemaal gefascineerd geweest door dit project, Tucked, een muts ontworpen door Woolly Wormhead. Mijn proeflapje met 3.25mm gaf me de juiste stekenproef. Maar, ik heb alleen heel korte sokkennaaldjes in deze maat, en mijn steken blijven van de naald glijden. Frustrerend breien zo.
The last two weeks I was absorbed by this project, Tucked, a hat designed by WoollyWormhead. My swatch with 3.25mm needles gave me the right gauge. But, I only have short sockneedles in this size, and my stitches kept sliding of my needles. A frustrating knit.

 

Dan maar overgeschakeld op lange rondbreinaalden in maat 3mm. Ook niet ideaal, maar het gaat al beter. Die 'tucks' oprapen is een beetje wriemelen, echt opschieten doet het niet, het is geen doorbrei-project. Maar wel fascinerend om te zien hoe de muts vorm krijgt met verkorte rijen. In de Ravelrygroep wordt druk verschillende technieken uitgewisseld om dit te doen.
So I switched to long circular needles in 3mm. Better, but still not ideal. Getting those tucks on the needles is a bit fiddly, it's not a quick knit. It's fascinating to see how the hat being shaped by shortrows. In the Ravelrygroup there is a lot of discussion going on about different techniques to do this.

 Op het einde van de muts, als de rijen korter worden, schakel ik toch weer over op de sokkennaaldjes, en ik heb nog extra een korte rondbreinaald gekocht. Hier kan je goed zien hoe de 'tuck' gevormd wordt. De steken van 6 rijen lager worden opgenomen en samengebreid met de rij waar je nu aan werkt.
At the crown shaping I switch to the double pointed needles again, and I have bought an extra short circular needle. Here you can see how the tucks are being knit together.
 

 En dit is het eindresultaat.
And this my final object.

 De muts zit perfect. Voor mij is dat de ideale vorm, een goed aansluitende rand rond het gezicht, en dan wat volume bovenop, een zogezegde 'slouchie beanie'. De averechtse ribbelranden geven er extra visuele flair aan, 't is niet zomaar een muts.
For me this is a perfect shape, a slouchie beanie. The tucks in reverse stockinette add extra visual interest, it's more then just a beanie. 

Deze vijf tinten grijs staan me goed, vind ik. Het was bedoeld voor de cadeautjesmand, maar misschien hou ik deze gewoon voor mezelf. En er komt nog een mysteriemuts samenbreiproject van Woolly Wormhead in november, nog opties om cadeautjes te breien dus.
I also like the five shades of grey. This was ment for a gift, but I might keep it for myself. And there is still the November mysteryhat by WoollyWormhead, so that's another option to knit a gift.
