en nu iets heel anders... and now for something completely different

In our household we travel to all kinds of places for our hobbies. My IronMan is supposed to run a marathon for his training schedule, and at the end of March there is the marathon of Rome, and the Marathon of Barcelona. I had a vote too, and so we will be on a plane to Catalonia tomorrow.

We are flying with a lowcost carrier, so handluggage only. Knitting needles tend to get confiscated at security, so I'll have to pack something else to entertain myself. AJ gave me some plastic crochet hooks, and at boekenfestijn I bought some books for inspiration.

But finally I found something in this book on my shelves, 'best of Interweave Crochet'

It's a small scarf in laceweight yarn. Ideal to use up this skein of alpaca-silk-cachmere, sitting in my stash since 2008. I am not really good at crochet, so I need to try out the pattern before I board the plane. The hardest thing in crochet is 'making a turn', making sure that you keep the right stitch count. Unfortunately, this pattern is text only, no chart.

The stitch pattern is very easy, but my turning needs improvement.

So off to find a crochet stitch I like, with charts. I'll have to swatch this evening, when I come back from my German evening course. Still time to pack tomorrow morning!

NB : my IronMan is injured. We will travel to Barcelona, but he won't be running the marathon. I hope he gets better soon, so that he can participate in the triathlon of Klagenfurt at the beginning of July !

gekikkerd - frogged

I could not resist cablemonth in the SKA-group. I started 'sottopassaggio' by yarnissima. It's a toe-up sock. The cable travels over the foot, and at the same time you do increases for the gusset.

'to frog' is breiwerk uithalen. 'Rip it'.
With this pattern row gauge is crucial. I am a loose knitter, so this sock is coming out too big in the foot. I guess I'll have to frog. Apropriate, because I am using Wollmeise in the color 'Frosch'! What's the sound of German frogs?

I guess I'll have to start over. Better stick to Wollmeise, I already have a good size swatch with these needles. What is it gonna be: 'Igor' on the left; or 'Mon Chéri' on the right?

Hmm. Misschien was Igor toch beter..Soms is breien twijfelen. Maar met twijfelen kom je niet vooruit.
Maybe I should have chosen Igor. But I don't feel like frogging again. I'll let it grow on me.

tussenin - inbetween...

Finished the first Clandestine sock in under a week. It's an intense sock to knit, but if you pay attention, totally do-able. Just one note: the sock is knit over 66 stitches. I am a loose knitter, usually a lace sock over 66 stitches would be way too wide for me. BUT: there are a lot of twisted stitches, and at the last row of the 'fan', there is some wrapping involved.
For me they come out just right, but for a tight knitter I would recommend going up a needle size.

The last days of February I was without sockproject. And besides slippedstitches, there was also a 'selfstriping' challenge in the sockknitters anonymous group. I cast on a sideways knit sock, but it did not really work out.

I really need an inbetween project, a project I can take along, and where I don't need to think. So I used the selfstriping yarn in another slipstitch sock.

I like the brown and blue combination. The yarn I used is Regia design line Kaffe Fassett. And a news flash: Kaffe Fassett is coming to my home town!

Maart - Clandestine : bruin/brown

The March sock in the Cookie knitalong is 'Clandestine'. In the book this sock is knit in a dark indigo blue 'Cookies dark secret'.

The March challenge for solid socks is 'brown'. I only have one hank of brown in my stash, this 'wolloase handgefarbt' in 'chocolat'. As a Belgian I know a bit about chocolat, and this does not look like a chocolat color at all. It is a nice reddish brown with a rosy-pink undertone; and it reminds me of nice Belgian beer...Cherry Lambic anyone?

And this is how my start looks like. I have to use the doublepointed sock needles, because I snapped my wooden circular needle doing the cables on Stalagmite...

Februari sokkenoogst -February sock harvest

The Stalagmites are a nervewrecking knit. I hope I have enough yardage in this skein (330 yards/365m). It looks like this sock is eating yarn at a very fast speed…Cabled knitting and a sock over 80 stitches, that contributes too to the yarn going fast…
What I feared comes through. The yarn does not have a lot of yardage, maybe this is not a good yarn-pattern match? When I start the toe on the 2d sock, I run out of yarn...

I have to finish the second sock with something else, and I have almost no blue in stash. I used a bit of Wollmeise in Hortensie, a blue with a purplish undertone, but it works I think. I am sure DD won’t mind…

Af!
Finished! This was an intense sock to knit, size small over 84 stitches, phew… But, very well written, and interesting to do. I feel I am a bit ‘cabled out’ now though. Tough luck, because March is cable month for the sockknitters anonymous.

Actually, the story is, I joined the Knit.Sock.Love group on Ravelry to do my favorite sock in the book, Thelonious.

I started it in thelonious month (March 2011?), but gave up after the first sock. I just could not get my head wrapped around the pattern instructions with all the markers. I decided I was just to dumb to knit Thelonious.
A bit later, my 2d favorit sock, Stricken, came along. I was on holiday then, and I had time to really concentrate on the instructions. And tada! … everything clicked.

This was a very relaxing knit, compared with the first time I did it. I really could not wrap my head around it the first time ( a year ago). Now I used it as ‘inbetween’ knitting during cable-intense stalagmite!

slip and knit

Sometimes when I am tired I don't want to do the chart heavy Cookie socks. I take inspiration from the sockknitters anonymous challenges to decide what to knit.

To my surprise DD selected this yarn for her next pair of socks. It's perfect for the February challenge, 'slipped stitches'. Slipped stitches are great to ‘tame’ variegated or pooling yarns.

Pattern is 'Nugatory' by Hunter Hammersen. I received this pattern as a gift last year. It’s a great pattern, but maybe I need more slipped stitches to battle the pooling.

This was a fun and quick knit. Just a little bit of interest with the slipped stitches, and the decreases on top of the foot, but the comfort of a basic ribbed sock. Just how DD likes her socks…

I still have other variegated yarns in my stash that need 'taming'...

Thelonious - sok 1 is af.
And I keep knitting on my Cookie socks of course. Thelonious - sock 1 is finished. You need to concentrate on this sock, but it goes fairly quick, as it is knit over 56 stitches.

And for the Stalagmite socks I pulled a nice blue out of my stash. It's a sock over 80 stitches, very intense to knit...

februari - stalagmite : lente!/spring

The februari color theme for solidsocks is 'spring'.

And the Februari sock in the CookieA knitalong is 'stalagmite', a heavily cabled sock. In the book it is knit in a pale blue, which shows the cables nicely.

There are not much signs of spring in our garden yet.

One of the first blooming trees in our garden is the magnolia.

... and I do have a hank of Wollmeise in the color 'Magnolie' in my stash. But I am a bit afraid that the yarn will knit up stripey, and thus will not be the right choice for this sock.

A bit later in spring the lilactree starts blooming...

This yarn, Bugga! in the color 'blue acmon' is a very nice lilac color. 'Blue acmon' turns out to be a butterfly, and maybe butterflies are summer creatures, but still, I think this is a perfect spring color.
Unfortunately this yarn does not work for the cabled socks. Bugga is a heavier weight sockyarn. And the pattern has only 2 sizes, the small starts over 80 stitches. I know cables draw in, but still, 80 stitches is a lot to start a sock. So, this sock will be way too big in this yarn...

Plan B : I still have to catch up one last sock in the knitalong schedule, this sock is 'Thelonious', and it comes in 4 sizes.

I am doing the extra small over 56 stitches, and that is just right.

Of nieuwe wol kopen?
I still have to find a solution for the Stalagmite socks though. Knit it in a non-spring color? Buy new yarn?

January's theme in the sockknitters anonymous group was 'fauna and flora'. I have several nice sock patterns with a leafy design in my queue. These ones for instance 'embossed leaves', from the book favorite socks.

Of deze? 'Birch leaf socks' uit het boek a gathering of lace.
Or these ones? 'Birch leaf socks' from the book a gathering of lace.
Both sock patterns are similar, but there are differences. The 'birch leaves' incorporate a rolled edge (instead of a ribbed cuff), and 2 different patterns on front and back of the socks. On the front you have the leafy design, on the back a ribbed lace for a better fit.

And I also have this pattern in my binder of 'to knit patterns'. It's 'woodland sprite', a pdf download that I received as a 'random act of kindness'.

I even have the perfect yarn for it, also a RAK-present.

The sock starts with a sideways knit cuff, knit flat and then joined in the round. From there on you pick up stitches for the cuff, with a different lace pattern on the front and back of the sock. It’s a fun knit!

Onopvallend ongewoon.
For the 'fauna' I am doing something completely different. No cheerfull color, no lace, but small cables to form the animal... can you see what's it going to be? They look a bit creepy, but it's a fun knit also. And perfect for DD's inner geek.

Grijs - Gray

We have had some very gray and dreary weather the last week. Perfect to sit inside and knit on a gray sock.I finished pattern 11 in the Cookie marathon. For me, this was one of the easier socks in the book. But maybe that’s due to the fact that I have some Cookie experience now…You still have to pay attention though, I ‘assumed’ that I knew the pattern on the 2d sock, and I goofed up and had to frog a whole part. I did the gusset decreases like in a regular sock pattern, together with the decreasing in lace this became a very weird sock…

If you participate in these knitalongs you are also entering in a draw for prizes. Even if you don't finish on time, you are still able to win as a 'slow finisher'. And this month I won in both categories! First I received this beautifull project bag, big enough for a shawl...

... and the second prize, a hank 100% merino sockyarn in the color 'jingle bells'.

As these are not really my colors, I decided to use the yarn to knit a chemohat. And thus the weekend ends on a less gray note...

Düsseldorf

Ja, Düsseldorf is een grote moderne stad...
True, Düsseldorf is a big city...

you get a great panorama view over the city from the Rheinturm...

you can visit several interesting museums with contemporary art exhibitions...

en ook de boekenwinkels zijn er reusachtig...
even the bookstores are huge ...

but you can also get a book from one of the 'public bookshelves', where people can leave books they won't read anymore, and take a book they like...

er zijn leuke kleine winkeltjes..
you can stumble upon nice small shops...

met paarse schaapjes in de voortuin...
with purple sheep in the frontyard...

Personally, I really enjoyed my visit to the local Ravelry 'Stricktreff'. The ladies were very welcoming, and provided me with tips about yarnstores and where to find the best knitting magazines (in the main railway station). Thanks again for the warm welcome, and for letting me have a taste of the local 'Alt'beer.

I did not buy anything in the yarn store, but a few knitting magazines for inspiration did make it back home.

This magazine is about 'knitting and felting', cute heh?

I also bought 2 booklets. Düsseldorf has a large Japanese community. You can eat very nice in several Japanese restaurants, and there is also a Japanese bookstore where I bought the right booklet.

Deze stola vind ik schitterend!
I really like this pattern...

A Japanese pattern is a first for me. Will be a personal challenge for 2012, I guess. I can use some help, if any of my readers has a clue how to start, any input is welcome.

The left booklet is about 'shortrow knitting', and this jacket is totally my style (maybe in different colors...)

It was a nice first visit to Düsseldorf. I think we should come back in summer to walk along the Rhine...
