sock madness - mod madness

 'Mod Madness' heet het volgende patroon, en de instructies zeggen dat je twee kleuren nodig hebt die sterk contrasteren. Eerst dacht ik twee effen kleuren te gebruiken, maar toen ik het patroon zag in een verloopgaren besloot ik om dit te proberen met twee zelfstrepende garens. Benieuwd hoe dat zal uitpakken!

'Mod Madness' is the next pattern in the competition, and the pattern asks for two colors with strong contrast. My first idea was to use solid colors, but when I saw the pattern I started with a gradient and a selfstriping. I hope this will work out…

Na sok één begin ik toch te twijfelen of dit wel een goed idee was. De Zauberball heeft een heel lang kleurverloop van zwart naar antraciet, zilvergrijs en uiteindelijk wit. Bij het begin van de tweede sok heb ik dus een wit been. Dit worden zogezegde 'brusjes' (of broertjes en zusjes). Ik vind het niet erg om verschillende sokken te hebben, maar dit is wel heel drastisch. Als het geen wedstrijd was zou ik ze uithalen en opnieuw beginnen, maar nu is er een deadline. Maar er is toch een stemmetje dat zeurt in mijn hoofd...

I am not too sure wether I like the very long color repeat in the black-gray-white Zauberball, and the effect in these socks. I don't mind fraternal socks, but these are really totally different. I am knitting against a deadline, so I soldier on. But something keeps nagging...

 

Als ik nu eens een derde sok brei? Alleen heb ik niet veel van het roze meer over, hoe zal ik dat oplossen, zonder nieuwe wol te kopen?
What if I knit a third sock? I just don't have much of the pink selfstriping leftover, how will I handle that (without buying new yarn?)

Ik heb nog een Zauberball met roze, paars en oranje, maar wel veel hardere kleuren dan in de oorspronkelijke zelfstrepende roze Lang Soxx die ik gebruikte. Toch maar proberen... uiteindelijk was het niet echt een moeilijk patroon, ook weer zo ééntje dat je na een tijdje zonder schema kan breien.
I still have a Zauberball in stash, with pink, orange and purple. These colors are harder then in my original pink selfstriping yarn, but it might work. The pattern is not too difficult, after some time I was able to knit it without a pattern.

Deze zijn dus weer brusjes, maar op een andere manier. De hoofdkleur is nogal gelijklopend. De contrastkleur is totaal anders, maar dat is vooral op de voet, het deel dat meestal in de schoen zit verborgen.
Fraternal socks again, but in a different way. The main color is in great part the same, the contrast color is different, but that's on the foot, mostly hidden in shoes.

 

Ik heb nu verschillende opties om dit paar te dragen. Als ik echt in een zotte bui ben kan ik nog altijd de witte dragen. En als ik een iets minder zotte bui ben kan ik de zwarte dragen, die ook verschilt van de eerste. Of zou ik nu een vierde sok opzetten terwijl we wachten op het volgende patroon?

I now have options to wear a totally mismatched sock when I am a silly mood, or a different kind of mismatched sock when I am feeling slightly more conservative...

sock madness - invitation to the dance

De sock madness wedstrijd begint weer op 1 maart. Vorig jaar heb ik voor het eerst meegedaan en verschillende uitdagende, ingewikkelde, mooie patronen gebreid, waar ik telkens iets nieuws geleerd heb. En daar doe ik het voor (niet echt voor de competitie).
Sock Madness starts March 1st. I participated for the first time last year, and have knit several complex, challenging and beautifull socks, where I learned something new with each project. And that's what it's all about for me (I am not really a competitive person...).

Dit jaar is er ook weer een opwarmsok, een mooi patroon - 'invitation to the dance'.
Aan de materiaallijst te zien denk ik dat er dit jaar verschillende patronen met kleurinbreiwerk zullen zijn. Dit lijkt wel het ideale patroon om nog eens wat fair-isle inbreiwerk te oefenen.
The warm-up sock this year is a design by Caou Coffee, called 'invitation to the dance'. 
By  looking at the material list, I suspect several of the patterns will involve colorwork, so this seems the perfect warm-up pattern.

Het is ook de gelegenheid om eens een andere techniek van inbreien te oefenen, de ladder back jaquard, die vaak gebruikt wordt bij machinebreien.
It's also a good opportunity to practise a different technique, ladder back jaquard, mostly used in machine knitting.

Maar waarom ziet mijn sok er helemaal anders uit dan  op de foto? Het duurt even voor ik zie dat ik het verkeerde schema brei, namelijk dat van het rechts-averechts patroont op de voet. Stom. En nu is er nog helemaal geen tijdsdruk, dat belooft voor de wedstrijd. Maar het was om te oefenen, herbeginnen is niet zo erg. En mijn 2 garens zijn ook niet  van dezelfde dikte, dat kan beter.

But why does my sock looks completely different from the pattern page? I used the knitpurl pattern to knit the colorwork… how stupid can you be? Or how anxious to start the sock and not notice that the pages came backwards out the printer?

Anyway, this was an opportunity to try out the ladder back jaquard technique. And to come to the conlusion that I need yarns of the same weight to knit nice colorwork…

 

Tweede poging. De garens zijn nu even dik. Ik gebruik mijn gewone inbreitechniek, en het blauw als dominante kleur. Maar jammer genoeg komen ze te klein uit over 64 steken. Opnieuw beginnen dus.

2d try. This time I tried knitting standard fair-isle, with floats. I used blue as the dominant color. Sadly, a standard fair-isle sock over 64 stitches is too tight. 

Derde poging. Terug een sok over 64 steken, en deze keer met roze als dominante kleur. Ik gebruik nog eens de ladder back jaquard techniek, want die voegt steken toe aan de achterkant, en is daardoor veel rekbaarder.
3th try. Started again over 64 stitches, this time with the pink as a dominant color, and with the ladder back jacquard technique, as this adds stitches at the back, and is a lot stretchier then standard fair-isle knitting.

De eerste sok is klaar en past perfect. Na het kleur inbreien heb ik terug naar 64 steken geminderd én heb ik de rest van de sok met een kleinere naald gebreid. Oef. En dat was nog maar de opwarmsok. De rest van de patronen wordt ongetwijfeld nog veel complexer! Je kan je nog inschrijven op de Ravelrygroep tot 28 februari. Als je van het eerste patroon minstens 1 sok breit krijg je alle patronen gratis. En er is ook een Nederlandstalige Ravelrygroep waar flink wat tips uitgewisseld worden. Samen tegen dezelfde obstakels lopen, en van elkaar leren, dat is het fijne van deze wedstrijd. Nu nog de tweede sok breien...
First sock finished. After finishing the colorwork I reduced the stitch count to 64 again, and used a smaller needle for the textured part. I have a perfect fit now! Phew. And this was only the warm-up sock... But thanks to the tips and tricks that are exchanged in the Dutch Ravelry group I managed to have a nice finished sock. Off to knit the second one...
