sea mist

'No-deadline'projects eventually get finished also, but  they take a bit longer...

Sea Mist, a crochet stole withouth a real pattern. I just combined a few crochet stitches from a stitch dictionary.

I used a denser stitch on the bottom, in my Dutch stitchbook it's called Peacock's Tail. I then rotated the scarf and continued with a more 'fishnetty' stitch, Shell grid in Dutch. I think these 2 work well together.

It was a birthday present for my best friend, and I think she was very happy with it....
She sure did not mind modelling it....
It's hard to believe today with the hot weather we are having now, but these pictures are taken only a week ago. We did not mind the overcast weather, it was great hiking weather. That's Belgium, you can have autumn and summer in the same week. A nice lightweight stole in alpaca-silk can one day scrunch up to be a warm scarf, our spread out to a stole that covers bare shoulders (not in this picture obviously).

And our trip lead us to some interesting sites...

Sorry voor de GSM-fotootjes, fototoestel vergeten!
Sorry for the cellphone pictures, I forgot my camera!

de laatste koekjes- the last Cookies

I still have the strong intention to knit through the complete 'Knit.Sock.Love'-boek by Cookie A. June was reserved to do Wedge, but I did not make it then.

Uittrekken dus.
Fortunately you get a second chance in the 'slow baked' finishing group on Ravelry. I tried this pattern with a selfstriping yarn, and I was not so happy with the outcome. So I frogged this one.

July is 'Sake' month. For this pattern you have to consult a big and detailled chart, not exactly a mindless sock to knit.
To better see the stitches I have started these in a neutral cream. I love cables in cream, and I do need to carefully look at what I am doing. Seeing tiny stitches has become more difficult the last time, at dusk I have to put this sock away.  Maybe I am at this age where I need to consider reading glasses?

The start of the Olympics is not really the time to knit chart heavy cable socks. Maybe I can try Wedge again? I 'get' the pattern a bit better, but the yarn I am using now is a heavy fingering alpaca woolblend, so this socks is getting to big, too warm, and I am running out of yarn.

The pattern for August is German stockings, but I still want to watch the Olympics, and I also have my 9 year old nephew staying over, so now is even less the time to knit complicated kneesocks.

We zullen dan maar simpele babymutsjes breien...
There are a few more newborn babies in my neighbourhood, and before you know it it will be winter and they will need warm hats...

I am still determined to knit all socks from the book, but I am also convinced that after that, I won't be knitting socks for a while. So, 3 more pairs, and then I am finished. Just in time for the next challenge Cookie A has up her sleeve...

TAZ

A weekend at the Belgian coast - wind, a little bit of sun, and a lot of theatre at the TAZ-festival...

You can also relax in the park, drink a cocktail, read a book...

But the best part is of course the theatre, more then 300 shows in 10 days... And this one had an extra mention for the knitting under 'costume design'  in the programm. You can't see the details  of the knitwear in the set picture, I took it in a hurry with my cellphone...

(zie tweede foto).
A weekend at the seaside is also the perfect time to finish some lingering socks. The brioche socks are tubesocks, so no heel, you have to block them into shape. Not so sure about that concept. And I still need a lot of practise to knit brioche stitch without mistakes! (see 2d picture)
I like these better - the pattern is called 'order from chaos', and I have knit them in Trekking handart, color Tundra. It's a mixture of black, forest green and wine red. Totally my colors, but sometimes not easy to see what you are doing in this dark colorway. Althoug the pattern was easy (slipped stitches), I still had to frog from time to time, due to lack of concentration? Anyway,  I have another pair of warm socks for next winter!

Same Same

The previous weeks I have knit all over Europe, in Denmark, Germany and Austria, and this is the final result. I am very happy with this cardigan. I am still a debutante in sweater knitting, and after all, it's a lot of knitting before you finally know if you like it and if it fits...

Everything starts with a swatch. I did a really big one, to be on the safe side, swatched with 3 different needle sizes and measured my swatch before and after washing.

The big advantage of this pattern is that everything is knit topdown, in the round, so you can try it on for fit during the process. Although, it took me a good 2 weeks of knitting before I had enough to try. It looked OK; so that was reassuring. As you can see, we had some glorious weather in Germany....

Next step: knit down, taking note where the buttonholes, side pleats and waist shaping needs to be incorporated. It's not a straight knit, you have to concentrate a bit!
Back in Belgium, the weather is a bit greyer...I think I almost have the right lenght here, maybe a few more rows, and then and I-cord bind-off. Oh, and knit the sleeves too...
Even the sleeves are finished with a pleat detail and an i-cord bind-off...

I am ready for Autumn! But I would not mind some Summer first please...

I am back from a sundrenched 2 weeks holiday, I had enough sun to cope with the grey weather here in Belgium. First we went to Stuttgart, a green city in the south of Germany, surrounded by vineyards.
Germany is an odd mixture of  tradition and modernity (is that a word?)

In Stuttgart you can enjoy a drink on the courtyard of the old castle, or visit a theatre boat (although this particular play did not really appealed to me...).
Stuttgart was just an inbetween stop on our way to our real destination...my IronMan had to stop at this lake to try out his wetsuit.
Hiervoor dus, de IronMan triatlon in Klagenfurt, Oostenrijk.
This was our goal, the Iron Man triathlon in Klagenfurt, Austria.
Tension building up just before the start, 7 am and already 25°celsius, so wetsuits are not allowed.
and go! 2700 swimmers  dive into the lake, for a 3.8k swim.
We as spectators walk to the end of the canal, where the swimmers come out of the lake to make the transition to the bike...then it's a nailbiting wait to see your ironman. And all of a sudden I notice that I have a missed call, message 'I had to give up'.... I am very sad for him, he has worked so hard to achieve this. But on the other hand, I also feel a bit of relief, because with the predicted temperatures of 37°c and a 180k bike race and another 42k run, this looked like an almost impossible task.

And because my IronMan trained for 6 months, and he does not want to waste what he built up, he decided to participate next SaturdayJuly 22d in the Antwerp triathlon. He did this one once before, and now he's hoping for good weather. So everybody, fingers crossed for mild temperatures, no rain and no wind!

onbekend- underappreciated

Juni is almost finished and I still need to start my Cookie sock of the month. Color of the month is green, a color which I don't seem to have much of in stash.  In the upper left corner is some Madeline Tosh, color 'Cedar', that could work...

Pattern of the month is Wedge. Too me this is a very atypical Cookie sock, no lace or complicated cable chart to follow. I lack motivation to start this. Looks like I will fall through the Cookie KAL...

The June theme in the sockknitersanonymous is 'underappreciated', knit a sockpattern that for some reason is not very popular. For some time I wanted to try out brioche stitch, so why not in my favorite kind of project, socks? I think this works well with some leftover selfstriping yarn (Regia Kaffe Fassett stripes)

I also have this pattern, it was a gift for Mothers day from DD. I think this pattern with slipped stitches will work well with the handdyed yarn that I have in stash.

But even these socks don't thrill me at all. I am completely smitten by my this cardigan I have just started in Wollmeise, color 'golden pear'. This will be a great project for my 2 week holiday in Germany and Austria.
