one skein swaps

I received the last package from my one skein angel, Claudia in Germany. She sent me a super cute and stylish clutch, knitted by her, and tea, stitch markers, chocolate, candles and yarn ! Thanks Claudia, you really spoiled me !
And I sent some more kool-aid dyed yarn to Estelle in France. To thank me, she brought me some Colinette lace yarn from the knitting and stitching show she attended in London ! Beautifull colorway, called 'bright charcoal'.
I haven't been knitting much, because my wrist is bothering me. The doctor thinks it might be 'carpal tunnel syndrome'(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carpal_tunnel_syndrome). I hope not ! it started with tingling and numbness, but now I have sharp pains in the wrist as well. All I can manage now is a bit of sock knitting. I hope it gets better soon.

I'll have to restart the log-cabin afghan

I have been pondering about what to do with the log-cabin afghan. What's the point of knitting an afghan if it never gets used ? It still is decorative, trown over the sofa, but I really would like to see it in use. I started this project to use up my cotton stash (that's why some of the squares are a bit weird - striped centres and so). I used almost all my cotton with a similar gauge, except the Rowan cotton glace I set aside to knit a Kaffe Fassett design (cones waistcoat). I am still collecting yarns - from the 20 or so colors necessary, I already have 9 in the original colors. But will I ever knit that waistcoat ? So I decided to use these cottons, but to make a color card of the yarns I already had collected, for future reference. My son said that by adding another row of squares at the bottom and one at the side, the afghan would be big enough (no garanties that he will actually use it). That means I have to knit 13 squares, undo the border and reknit that. At the rate I am knitting now, I estimate this is another month of knitting and sewing. I guess I am not yet done with this project !

about knitting/crocheting afghans

I have finished 2 afghans now. I am a bit dissappointed about how they are received by the recipients. My 2 teenagers like to curl up under an old sleeping bag when watching TV. These sleeping bags look so old and tattered, that crocheting/knitting new afghans seemed like a good idea. It would help me to use up some of my stash, and I would be able to make something that would actually get used. I don't knit sweaters for my family, because there are always fit/color/fabric issues. I thought, naievely, that that would not happen with an afghan. Ha ! was I wrong ! turns out that the crocheted one is too itchy, too holey, too busy and too colorfull. And the knitted one is plain too short and too narrow and not warm enough.
I tried to solve the issues with the crochet afghan (the itch factor, that is), by adding a lining. It took me 4 afternoons to do that. New problems arose - the lining and upper layer moved seperately from each other. That's why I sewed on 30 buttons from my button stash. But, according to my DD, it still is 'not usable'. I liked it better when it was just crochet. I have several options now :
- undo the lining from the crochet afghan
- undo the border from the knitted afghan, and add more squares
- start a new afghan
- give up the idea of handmade afghans all toghether

my new knitting book - tva°andstickning

When I was in Stockholm, I also bought a knitting book for a friend of mine in the US. Jane wrote me how much she loved this book on Swedish twined knitting (the title is literally 'knitting from 2 ends at the same time'). It looks very complicated to me - but I really like the end products - very warm (double fabric) mittens and hats !
A collegue of mine visited Stockholm last week, and I asked her to look out for the book and get me another copy. She brought me the last copy the store had in stock. I sent her to the store of the Swedish handicraft association (svensk hemslöjd) - very worth a visit. You can find them on Sveavägen 44, 111 34 Stockholm (underground stop is Hötorget)

log-cabin blanket - finished pictures

I promised some pictures of the finished blanket (or afghan), and here they are. I am really pleased with the outcome. Now I fear it will not be used, and I fear it will get used ....
Yarns in this blanket :
- Anny Blatt 'Louxor' and Anny Blatt 'Assouan' - bought in Orange (France) in the Anny Blatt factory outlet
- Rowan 'cotton glace' and '4ply cotton' - my LYS and swaps
- Scheepjeswol 'cotton 8' - a market stand somewhere in Holland
- Debbie Bliss 'wool/cotton' -swap
- unknown cotton (several shades of brown) - no label, but probably Anny Blatt or Bouton d'or (also bought in Orange)
- 4 points cottonade - a friends stash
- variegated blue cotton - bought on a cone in Pisa (Italy)
- Schachenmayer Nomotta 'blue jeans' - my LYS and ebay
don't you think the finished blanket looks better then the pile of leftover yarns ?

on the needles

I have finished knitting my log-cabin blanket, border and everything ! Sorry, no pictures yet; I am waiting for a sunny day to get some photoshoot opportunities. Just let me tell you I am verrrrry pleased with it. Taking care of it will be difficult, I cannot imagine putting this heavy cotton blanket in the washer. Will probably need to be drycleaned.
After all this cotton knitting, my hands are yearning to knit with wool again. I should probably try to finish some UFO's from last year, but I would like to start something new again. Maybe I can do both ?
What I have on the needles right now (the so called WIP's, work in progress) :
- a Hanne Falkenberg sweater : 'Jazz' - started september 2005, when I was recovering from knee surgery. And then I developed frozen shoulder problems, and couldn't knit at all for 6 months. It will be beautifull when finished, but I'll have to think very hard to get acquinted with the pattern again (of course I didn't take notes).
- sock - the pattern is 'Step Dance socks' by Mary Dominski' knitted in Knitpicks 'Essential'. You can order this at the blackberry ridge woolen mils http://www.blackberry-ridge.com/elitfeet.htm I always have a sock on the needles - makes great take-along knitting. If you look closely at the picture in my Sept. 22 post, you can see that this sock has already traveled to Stockholm. (after traveling from the US to Belgium)
- the swallowtail shawl by Evelyne Clark (sorry no picture of this green blob) - I am knitting this in Knitpicks Alpaca Cloud. I have knitted the flower basket shawl from the same designer, and liked that. But this time, those nupps really are making me grind my teeth ! they same almost impossible to do ! Not fun.
That's it really. Not much progress on the sweater or the shawl, but writing this down has motivated to pick those up. Blogging helps !

Droogkuis misschien ?
Bloggen helpt.

secret pal 9

Here are my answers to the secret pal 9 questionnaire :

1. What is/are your favorite yarn/s to knit with? What fibers do you absolutely *not* like?

I like everyhting - really. I think there is a place for every yarn. A good acrylic can produce a nice baby garment. But of course, I love knitting with the 'better' yarns. I just know that not everybody appreciates real wool. Me, I looove real wool. There is one yarn that I sadly am allergic to, and that is angora.

2. What do you use to store your needles/hooks in?
I have old plastic tubes that were designed to store needles. They are but ugly, but serve their purpose. My circular needles are in a carboard box, that I covered with KF fabric. Nice box, if I do say so. It also has a shelf for smaller things (needles, beads, stitch markers ...)

3. How long have you been knitting & how did you learn? Would you consider your skill level to be beginner, intermediate or advanced?
I learned as a child and hated it then. Picked it back up when my children were born. Untill I discovered the internet and the knitlist, I was a beginner. I think I will qualify as intermediate now. To become advanced, you would need to design your own stuff. I almost always start from an existing pattern.

4. Do you have an Amazon or other online wish list?
no

5. What's your favorite scent? (for candles, bath products, etc.)
I like fresh, citrus scents. Nothing to flowery or sweet and heavy.

6. Do you have a sweet tooth? Favorite candy?
I love chocolate, but living in a country that has a rich tradition makes me a bit sceptical to foreign brands.

7. What other crafts or Do-It-Yourself things do you like to do? Do you spin?
a little bit of crochet, dyeing, occassionaly cross-stitch, patchwork, reading. I don't want to take up spinning, I am fearing a new stash might evovlve from that !

8. What kind of music do you like? Can your computer/stereo play MP3s? (if your buddy wants to make you a CD)
I don't have a real preference, but nothing to heavy.

9. What's your favorite color(s)? Any colors you just can't stand?
If I use it for decoration it can be pretty wild. But for clothing I like more subdued colors. So I will like a burgundy, but not a bright red, a mustard, but not a true yellow, olive but not forest green.... I love all browns and greys ! My blog will maybe give you the wrong idea, because I have posted several Kaffe Fassett sweaters there. I have discovered that I love to knit with color, but I don't wear those garments. That's why I have knitted/crocheted blankets recently. Now I have to convince my children to use those !

10. What is your family situation? Do you have any pets?
I have a husband and 2 teenagers (or young adults) - my DH and DD are allergic to pets.

11. Do you wear scarves, hats, mittens or ponchos?
I don't wear a hat often, only when it's very, very cold. I love mittens, and have one poncho, and one poncho/shawl thingie.

12. What is/are your favorite item/s to knit?
socks !

13. What are you knitting right now?
I am finishing up a log-cabin afghan. After all this heavy cotton, I am aching to knit with wool again. I started a Hanne Falkenberg sweater last year, and will take that up again. I also have a pair of socks on the needles.

14. Do you like to receive handmade gifts?
that depends - surprise me

15. Do you prefer straight or circular needles? Bamboo, aluminum, plastic?
Again, there is a place for everything. I have learned to knit with a needle in my armpit, so if it's possible I preferr long straight needles. But some projects need to be knit on a circular needle. And I knit all my socks on very short bamboo dpn's, because socks are my travel project.

16. Do you own a yarn winder and/or swift?
I don't.

17. How old is your oldest UFO?
I don't think I have one lying around that is older then 3 years, and that one will probably be frogged.

18. What is your favorite holiday?
summer

19. Is there anything that you collect?
'only' yarn and knitting books

20. Any books, yarns, needles or patterns out there you are dying to get your hands on? What knitting magazine subscriptions do you have?
I am always interested in new stuff ! I am subscribed to Interweave Knits.

21. Are there any new techniques you'd like to learn?
I have a Danish kit for a scarf in double knitting, and I haven't mastered that one yet.

22. Are you a sock knitter? What are your foot measurements?
I knit a lot of socks. I wear an European size 39

23. When is your birthday? (mm/dd)
August 25th

finished knitting

I have finished knitting the last 4 squares. Now I have to start sewing all this together ... I have sewed the first 4 squares (the top strip so to say), and knitted the start of the border in this brownish red, heavier weight cotton. I have 9 balls of this, and used one for this end of the border. Of course, the other strips will be a lot longer ...

kool-aid dyeing

I did some kool-aid dyeing. You can see the resulting skein in my very first post of this blog. I sent everything to Estelle in France, in the 'one skein secret pal exchange', and now she has sent me a picture of the scarf she knitted with 'my' yarn. I think it's fabulous ! I would never have thought about knitting lace with this bulky yarn, but it looks great. Interesting to see what other knitters come up with. I love these exchanges - great to get to know other knitters. Estelle doesn't has a blog, but agreed to have this picture posted here. I used kool-aid in the flavors grape, ice-blue raspberry something and lemon-lime. I have sent Estelle some more of this stuff, so that she can play with it. Great job on the scarf Estelle, I love the ruffled edging !

more squares

I have tried knitting a square with the yarns I showed in my previous post. I now have a very sweet pastel square, that would be fabulous for a baby blanket. Sadly it doesn't work for THIS blanket. If I use pastel colors, I need to perk them up with dark or bright colors. Looks like I will use the KF yarns after all.
